THE DEATHMASTER (1972): MOVIE REVIEW

Death MasterTHE DEATHMASTER (1972) – In between his pair of movies as the vampire named Count Yorga the one and only Robert Quarry starred as a vampiric Charles Manson wannabe in this film. The Deathmaster starts out with a great bit that wouldn’t look out of place in a Jean Rollin horror flick from France: the huge, hulking Barbado (Le Sesne Hilton) plays eerie flute music, seemingly luring ashore a sea-tossed coffin. Naturally this casket holds our “Deathmaster” – a vampire called Khorda.

Unfortunately it’s all downhill from there unless you’re like me and you really enjoy bad movies. Khorda eschews the usual vampire shtick of being a suave ladies’ man. His approach is to dress like early 1970s hippies do and model his coiffure and facial hair after Charles Manson. The filmmakers even admitted that was indeed the look they were going for.

Khorda feeds on assorted Californians while spending his spare time gathering around him a collection of 1960s losers and retreads plus some biker gang members just for good measure. Our undead heavy becomes their guru, spouting the type of generic, faddish spiritual nonsense that is always a good way to sound deep while not really saying anything at all.     Continue reading →

NAIA FINAL FOUR ACTION AND MORE COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS

Indiana Wesleyan WildcatsFIRST SEMIFINAL – A battle of 1 seeds started us off as the (1) INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS played the (1) INDIANA UNIVERSITY EAST RED WOLVES.

This battle royal featured the Wildcats clinging to a 37-35 edge over the Red Wolves at Halftime and ultimately holding on by their fingernails for a 75-72 victory. Kyle Mangas of Indiana Wesleyan University led his team to the Championship Game with 20 points.  Continue reading →

NJCAA AND OTHER COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ACTION

NJCAA DIV THREE

Herkimer Generals logo BIGDISTRICT 301: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The 2 seeds – the HERKIMER COLLEGE GENERALS – faced down the Cinderella 8th seeded FULTON-MONTGOMERY COLLEGE RAIDERS.

At Halftime the Raiders were up 35-31 but after the break the Generals made their move. Herkimer College came storming back for a 74-64 victory led by Teshaun Beckles’ 17 points. * THE GENERALS ARE CHAMPIONS OF DISTRICT 301 * 

Brookdale College Jersey BluesDISTRICT 306: CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The top seeded BROOKDALE COLLEGE JERSEY BLUES took on the 3rd seeded CUMBERLAND COUNTY COLLEGE DUKES for this District Title.

An Instant Classic of an opening Half ended with the Jersey Blues on top 36-35. From there Brookdale College managed a little more room for themselves enroute to a 70-62 triumph. Grant Goode led the Jersey Blues with a Double Double of 25 points and 11 rebounds. * THE JERSEY BLUES ARE CHAMPIONS OF DISTRICT 306 * Continue reading →

Wow, weeks later and people are still arguing about the recently-unveiled presidential portrait of the weak, inept and crooked little man named Barack Obama.

Personally, I think it looks GREAT! I mean look at it! (left) It perfectly captures Barry in every way, shape and form.

I know a lot of Obama devotees are angry about the way the little dolt is embarrassedly hiding his six fingered hand but that look on his face perfectly captures Barack.

I think the people who DO have a point are the ones who revealed that the hate-mongering hack who painted Obama’s portrait usually churns out paintings of people beheading other people. (I’m NOT kidding with that, by the way.)

Yes, Barack, lecture the world about hate while you have your portrait painted by a piece of garbage who often does Decapitation Porn.

Anyway, it’s no secret that Barack Obama was America’s worst president ever, narrowly beating out George W Bush, so here’s a look back at some of the things that Obama ridiculously tried to take credit for.

Balladeer’s Blog presents another edition of Give Them A Shoutout Before They’re Dead! Tommy Shaw’s solo career away from the band Styx has ignited countless passionate debates about his overall importance to the band and about Styx’s overall importance in rock and roll history.

But let’s put all that aside for now and give a shoutout to Tommy Shaw’s What If aka Remo’s Theme. This was, of course, the theme song for the movie Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

That movie kicked off the monumentally successful series of films about that American James Bond, the Destroyer himself: Remo Williams. Billions of dollars would follow as it seemed each pulse-pounding installment of Remo’s on-screen saga earned more money than the one that preceded it.

I’m being sarcastic, of course. Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins earned back about 14 million dollars off a FORTY MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET … and featured Joel Grey making Christopher Lee and Mickey Rooney feel MUCH better about their own renditions of Asian characters.

NCCAA COLLEGE BASKETBALL CHAMPS CROWNED, NAIA FINAL FOUR SET

NCCAA DIV TWO

Randall University Saints NEWCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – It was a Chalk Championship Game with the top two seeds facing each other. The 1 seeds – the two-time Defending Champions – the RANDALL UNIVERSITY SAINTS played the 2nd seeded BOB JONES UNIVERSITY BRUINS.

Points flew like shrapnel in the 1st Half, which ended with the Saints on top of the Bruins by a count of 52-44. After the break Bob Jones University came storming back and grabbed a 76-75 lead with roughly 6 minutes to play. Randall University refused to say die and rallied for an 86-84 victory led by Trey Sneed’s THIRTY points.  * THE SAINTS ARE NCCAA2 CHAMPIONS * 

NAIA DIV TWO

Indiana East Red WolvesFINAL FOUR, FIRST BERTH – One of the 1 seeds – the INDIANA UNIVERSITY EAST RED WOLVES – did battle with the 3rd seeded BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS.

The Red Wolves pulled out to a 41-33 Halftime lead over the Chargers. Both teams notched 35 points in the 2nd Half, making the final tally for the game Indiana University East 76  Briar Cliff University 68. Jaylen McKay tossed in 19 points to lead the Red Wolves. Continue reading →

THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR (1973): MOVIE REVIEW

Supposedly they are remaking this 1970s Blaxploitation movie, at least according to Balladeer’s Blog readers who requested I review it. As it turns out I did review it in 2012, so here it is again.

402px-spook_who_sat_by_the_door_1973THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR (1973) – The title of this explosive film, based on the controversial novel by Sam Greenlee, plays on the old double meanings of the slang expression “spook”. While spook could be used as a derogatory term for a black person it could also refer to a secret agent.

The story’s hero, played by Lawrence Cook, is an African American working in the domestic offices of the Central Intelligence Agency. While outwardly an efficient and capable paper pusher he inwardly regards himself as an undercover operative for his own race, infiltrating the white intelligence establishment.

After  five years of learning all he can via secretly reading CIA operations files our protagonist, significantly named Dan Freeman, decides to launch a covert operation of his own to destroy the white power structure and elevate his people to positions of authority. Continue reading →
