AMSTERDAMNED (1988) – Well, this will be an unexpected twist for regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog. Usually I review bad movie classics that don’t have the following they deserve, but in this case I’m reviewing a film that has a reputation for being bad, but really isn’t.
I’ve meant to write this review for awhile now. Amsterdamned is one of those films on the “must see” list for many of my fellow bad movie fans. I felt that way for years, too. After all, the film is from the same director who did The Lift, the hilariously bad “killer elevator” movie that I reviewed long ago on this blog. It also Continue reading
HAWKS TRIUMPHANT – The NAIA’s 17th-ranked LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES gave the top-ranked SHORTER HAWKS nearly all they could handle yesterday. The Flames took the Hawks into overtime but wound up losing to them 80-77 on their own court. The Hawks remain the only undefeated team in NAIA-1 basketball.
NUMBER ONE TAKES A FALL – Meanwhile, in the Continue reading
The Shorter Hawks (logo at left), the number one team in the NAIA-1 poll, take it on the road today against the Lee University Flames in a much-anticipated matchup. Noteworthy results from last night’s action found the Westminster Griffins defeating the Great Falls Argonauts 73-66, the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears take down the Montana Tech Orediggers 83-70 and, in the game of the day, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles log an overtime victory over the Oklahoma City University Stars in a 64-63 Instant Classic.

If you believe we never landed on the moon and that the 9-11 attacks were staged by the U.S. government you probably also believe that the world will end this December 21st. Balladeer’s Blog has been examining past “end of the world” scares, and will continue to do so through at least December 22nd, 2012.
William Whiston, a British mathematician, grandly announced that according to his calculations the world would end on October 13th, 1736. He further stated that the opening act for this cosmic drama would be the destruction of London by a flood early on that same date.
Because no matter what the century, there’s never any shortage of people willing to be suckered in by the latest predictions of global doom, countless numbers of Continue reading
A nice January day like today seems like a good time for Balladeer’s Blog to take a look at the college hockey rankings for the NJCAA and for NCAA Division 3. D3’s defending champs, the St Norbert College Green Knights (logo at left) come in at number 5 this week, up 3 spots from last week’s poll.
NJCAA Top 5 – 1. Monroe Tribunes… 2. Erie College Paws … 3. Williston State College Tetons … 4. Broome Hornets … 5. Morris Titans
NCAA D3- 1. Norwich Cadets … 2. Oswego State Lakers … 3. Continue reading
The callous, conscienceless zombies of State College, Pennsylvania, the home of Pedopohile State University and the football team called the Sodomy Lions, are so divorced from reality and so demented in their fetishistic worship of the late alleged pedophile enabler Joe Paterno that they are having a parade in honor of him right after his funeral service this Wednesday.
I was going to refrain from posting again about the overrated late coach most noted for allegedly having failed to call the police or child services about his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s alleged assaults on underaged boys in Penn State facilities. I wasn’t going to bother mentioning again how Paterno himself publicly stated he Continue reading
The latest polls are out for the NAIA’s two divisions and for NCAA Division 3. Tomorrow the new D2 and NJCAA polls will be released. The Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls are the new number 1 team in the NAIA-2 poll after the previous number 1, the Northwood (FL) Seahawks, fell to the unranked Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles on the 19th.
NAIA-1 – 1. Shorter Hawks (18-0!) Continue reading
Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog know that I consider all religion to be mythology and that none of the world’s “holy books” should be taken literally. Most religions are civilized enough that their practicioners can deal with that viewpoint, no matter how angry it makes them. We all know which religion would be the one exception and the book The Closing of the Muslim Mind by Robert R Reilly provides a great deal of insight about that religion.
Reilly’s book covers the conflict between religious literalists and rationalists in the Muslim word from the 9th century C.E. to the 11th century C.E. Obviously, the Continue reading
GUILFORD TAKES DOWN NUMBER TWO TEAM IN THE NATION – The GUILFORD QUAKERS shocked D3’s 2nd-ranked VIRGINIA WESLEYAN MARLINS on their own court yesterday. The Quakers pulled off a 60-55 upset for the ages.
WPI DOWNS MIT – In a case of Engineer on Engineer violence the number 3 MIT ENGINEERS were likewise upset at home. Their 80-68 loss came at the hands of the WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS.
MORE D3 UPSETS – In keeping with yesterday’s theme of ranked D3 teams getting upset by unranked opponents the 6th- ranked MARY HARDIN- BAYLOR CRUSADERS were taken down by the MCMURRY WARHAWKS, who will be moving to D2 next season. The final score was 75-71. Yesterday also saw the Continue reading
