AND YET ANOTHER DISILLUSIONED LEFTIST JOINS THE REST OF US IN RECOGNIZING THE FASCISM OF THE DEMOCRATS WHO SEIZED THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS

educa smallerIn this Portland State University instructor’s resignation letter regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog will recognize echoes of my own disgust with the way the American Left and especially the Democrat Party are now the most intolerant and fascistic elements of American life. Peter Boghossian is the assistant professor of philosophy in question.

Below is his published letter of resignation. None of it will seem new to those of us who have watched the Democrats distort the educational process over the years. I have published literally dozens of these accounts, but here is the latest one for any people who have not yet accepted that American colleges and universities have become “churches” of irrational thought and fascistic political intolerance. For more such articles click HERE. For my look at how American universities parallel Aristophanes’ comedy The Birds click HERE. Original article below HERE.

PETER BOGHOSSIAN: MY UNIVERSITY SACRIFICED IDEAS FOR IDEOLOGY. SO TODAY I QUIT.

Peter Boghossian has taught philosophy at Portland State University for the past decade. In the letter below, sent this morning to the university’s provost, he explains why he is resigning.

“Dear Provost Susan Jeffords,

I’m writing to you today to resign as assistant professor of philosophy at Portland State University.

Over the last decade, it has been my privilege to teach at the university. My specialties are critical thinking, ethics and the Socratic method, and I teach classes like Science and Pseudoscience and The Philosophy of Education. But in addition to exploring classic philosophers and traditional texts, I’ve invited a wide range of guest lecturers to address my classes, from Flat-Earthers to Christian apologists to global climate skeptics to Occupy Wall Street advocates. I’m proud of my work.

I invited those speakers not because I agreed with their worldviews, but primarily because I didn’t. From those messy and difficult conversations, I’ve seen the best of what our students can achieve: questioning beliefs while respecting believers; staying even-tempered in challenging circumstances; and even changing their minds.

I never once believed — nor do I now — that the purpose of instruction was to lead my students to a particular conclusion. Rather, I sought to create the conditions for rigorous thought; to help them gain the tools to hunt and furrow for their own conclusions. This is why I became a teacher and why I love teaching.

But brick by brick, the university has made this kind of intellectual exploration impossible. It has transformed a bastion of free inquiry into a Social Justice factory whose only inputs were race, gender, and victimhood and whose only outputs were grievance and division.

education conveyor belt smallerStudents at Portland State are not being taught to think. Rather, they are being trained to mimic the moral certainty of ideologues. Faculty and administrators have abdicated the university’s truth-seeking mission and instead drive intolerance of divergent beliefs and opinions. This has created a culture of offense where students are now afraid to speak openly and honestly.

I noticed signs of the illiberalism that has now fully swallowed the academy quite early during my time at Portland State. I witnessed students refusing to engage with different points of view. Questions from faculty at diversity trainings that challenged approved narratives were instantly dismissed. Those who asked for evidence to justify new institutional policies were accused of microaggressions. And professors were accused of bigotry for assigning canonical texts written by philosophers who happened to have been European and male.

At first, I didn’t realize how systemic this was and I believed I could question this new culture. So I began asking questions. What is the evidence that trigger warnings and safe spaces contribute to student learning? Why should racial consciousness be the lens through which we view our role as educators? How did we decide that “cultural appropriation” is immoral?

Unlike my colleagues, I asked these questions out loud and in public.

I decided to study the new values that were engulfing Portland State and so many other educational institutions — values that sound wonderful, like diversity, equity, and inclusion, but might actually be just the opposite. The more I read the primary source material produced by critical theorists, the more I suspected that their conclusions reflected the postulates of an ideology, not insights based on evidence.

I began networking with student groups who had similar concerns and brought in speakers to explore these subjects from a critical perspective. And it became increasingly clear to me that the incidents of illiberalism I had witnessed over the years were not just isolated events, but part of an institution-wide problem.

The more I spoke out about these issues, the more retaliation I faced. Continue reading

FACULTY LOUNGE FASCIST ROUNDUP: MAY 22nd

educa smallerIt’s the latest installment of Faculty Lounge Fascist Roundup! It’s no secret that privileged white Democrats aka “baizuos” have distorted the educational system into a partisan “church” of irrational thought and ugly intolerance.

Their discriminatory hiring practices have long been apparent in the number of Democrats vs non-Democrats in the faculty and ESPECIALLY administrative staff. If NON-Democrats were around 90% of the staff at colleges and universities you can bet Democrat elected officials would have looked out for their constituents and addressed that imbalance and bias long ago. “Viewpoint discrimination” would be discussed everywhere with legislation addressing the issue in the news all the time. WE NEED THIRD PARTIES!

JOHN SEXTON has authored a recent examination of the many ways in which these discriminatory practices come into play, partially inspired by the Democrats’ recent hypocritical pretense that they care about the issue. CLICK HERE TO READ IT.   Continue reading

As we’ve all seen over and over and over again, people have been hounded from jobs in education and elsewhere for social media posts saying “All lives matter” or “Blue lives matter” or for making any statement of support for political candidates that Democrat fascists dislike. But in this case the university in question hypocritically pretended to care about “free speech.” Click HERE

SHARYL ATTKISSON HEROICALLY EXPOSES THE BIASES OF SELF-PROCLAIMED “FACT CHECKERS”

masc graveyard newWHO CHECKS THE “FACT CHECKERS?” It’s no secret that the Democrats have transformed every aspect of life into an ugly political situation. “The personal is the political” is the shallow line that they have pushed for decades now in order to justify the insertion of their political prejudices into the lives of everyone around them.

“Education” (LMAO), news reporting and Social Media fell to Democrat power politics long ago, especially the Democrats’ discriminatory hiring practices and tendency to want people fired or censored for expressing ANY opinion with which even the most emotionally fragile Democrat disagrees. Therefore it came as no surprise that Teacher’s Unions, media outlets and Social Media tycoons make their political donations almost exclusively to Democrat candidates.

One of the biggest downsides to this has been the death of ANY attempt at objectivity. No “experts” or “authorities” or – most ridiculously of all – “fact checkers” are to be trusted anymore. Self-proclaimed Fact Checkers serve no purpose except confirmation bias for their target audience.

Sharyl AttkissonSharyl Attkisson, the Ida Tarbell of the 21st Century, has done a deep dive into the biases and prejudices of “fact checking.” The link is below, but first some excerpts:

“That discord is likely to persist because in large part the fact-checking solution is illusory. Many such efforts fail because they amount to a circular feedback loop of verification. The fact-checkers are like-minded journalists or often liberal Silicon Valley gatekeepers, who frequently rely on partisan news sources and political activists to control narratives on a wide variety of issues and controversies. This small group of players exerts an oversized influence, using fact checks to shape and censor information.”

In that same article Attkisson covered one of Twitter’s absurd “fact checks” … about a hypothetical situation that hasn’t even happened (or not happened) yet –

“Like many questionable “fact checks” at issue, Twitter’s critique wasn’t really a fact check at all. It used past reporting from selected partisan news sources to claim that a prediction about what could happen in the future is untrue — before it even happens or doesn’t happen. It was, in short, a Democratic Party talking point.”

” … today’s brand of “fact-checking” is rarely cut and dry, such as verifying the date an event occurred. Now, fact checks are frequently used to litigate matters of opinion or debate, and to proclaim the truth about facts that are unknown, or cannot possibly be known, at the time. They commonly provide what they call the “context” they claim is necessary to assess a factual claim, rather than a simple assessment of whether a statement is correct or incorrect. As a result, many factually correct statements are deemed to be “half true” or “mostly false.”  “

“Keeping this in mind, the biggest inherent flaw with efforts to fact-check information may lie in the qualifications, bias, and conflicts of interest among the ranks of the fact-checkers themselves. One example is the fact-checking nonprofit First Draft, started by Google at the beginning of the 2016 election cycle. Google is owned by Alphabet, Inc. Alphabet executives and employees comprise a politically active group that ranks among the largest political donors to Democrats in the country. During the 2016 campaign, Alphabet was led by an ardent Hillary Clinton supporter and campaign volunteer, executive chairman Eric Schmidt.” Continue reading

CAMPUS DEMOCRATS CALL A STATUE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN “WHITE SUPREMACY” AND DEMAND ITS REMOVAL

Education or indoctrination gifBalladeer’s Blog has often covered the way in which Democrats have reduced America’s educational institutions to “churches” of irrational thought and political intolerance. And just when you may think Democrats can’t show their ignorance, hatred and divisiveness any more clearly, the Democrats of the Student Union at the University of Wisconsin in Madison stepped in to take the lunacy even higher. They want a statue of Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator himself, removed since they claim it invokes White Supremacy. (Link below)

Orwell on historyDemocrat mobs have recently dragged down or vandalized even statues of African-American civil rights icon Frederick Douglass in their ugly madness. Well, Douglass was a Republican and we know that Democrats believe that African-Americans must obey them and NEVER belong to a political party of their own choosing.

THE BIRDS (414/6 BC): ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY

Birds by Aristophanes 1Balladeer’s Blog presents another examination of an ancient Greek political satire. This comedy by Aristophanes was one that I was planning on covering very soon when I started posting my reviews of Attic Old Comedy years ago. For various reasons it kept falling by the wayside.

Where am I going with this? For Aristophanes’ line “In Cloud-Cuckooland things become what they are called rather than being called what they are” make it “In Ivory Towerland things become what they are called rather than being called what they are.” But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The Birds is Aristophanes’ lengthiest surviving comedy and also the most analyzed (some would say over-analyzed). So much has already been written about this particular work that I’ve decided to forego my usual intensive examination of every scene. Instead I’ll go with a brief synopsis followed by a way I feel The Birds could be adapted (as opposed to translated) for the present day.

SYNOPSIS

Birds by Aristophanes 2More than 2,300 years before George Orwell’s Animal Farm and 1984, Aristophanes was dealing with some of the same political themes.

Pisthetaerus and Euelpides, Athenians feeling alienated by the increasingly restrictive laws and lawsuits of their home city have left Athens behind to start over with a new society. Part of the comedy centers around the ages-old theme of how those who seek to overthrow oppression often wind up becoming the new oppressors themselves. (Think of the 1960s generation of American leftists who became just as oppressive as they claimed previous generations had been)

Another Orwellian theme finds Aristophanes satirizing the way in which the ruling class in any society uses and corrupts language to strengthen the subjugation of the populace. The Birds even features the importance of religious and historical myths in any culture as the leaders of the new civilization conjure up an all-new cosmology with “the birds” at the center to justify their own rule.
