THE PRISONER (1967): DANCE OF THE DEAD

Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the science fiction/ existential drama The Prisoner. For Part One, in which I examined the themes and concepts at play in the series click HERE

Prisoner Dance of the DeadEpisode Title: DANCE OF THE DEAD

In the eternally-open debate about the exact order of the 17 episodes of The Prisoner I unashamedly hold with those who place Dance of the Dead as Episode Two. My main reason is the fact that the Prisoner himself and other characters bluntly state he is new to the Village.

Plus this episode features him betraying so much lack of awareness of the Villagekeepers’ Head Games and their placement of cameras everywhere that to me Dance of the Dead only makes sense coming immediately after the first episode, Arrival.

Mary Morris as Number TwoMary Morris as this episode’s Number Two is one of the most memorable Number Twos in the rotating series of those Village executives. As we all know Trevor Howard was originally slated for this episode but Morris is a more than welcome change.

The title is perfect for anyone with the Prisoner mindset. So-called “mainstream society”, including its bizarre rituals which so many willingly and mindlessly play along with, truly is a Dance of the Dead. Today Facebook and Twitter and social media in general take the whole concept beyond the point of parody.

To me part of the argument for placing Dance of the Dead as Episode Two comes from the way it embodies the television industry problem called Second Episode Blues in which a strong opening episode is often followed by one that is a bit aimless compared to that debut.

Dance of the Dead‘s storyline – fragmented though it may seem – features a nice selection of elements that show up in various combinations in nearly every subsequent Prisoner episode:

“THIS MAN HAS A FUTURE WITH US” – On the literal level it IS true that a talented former Intelligence Agent like Number Six could be an asset to the conspirators behind the Village.

On the allegorical level, the leadership in even the most conformist and oppressive societies stays on the lookout for capable recruits. It’s often the most efficient way of co-opting individuals whose abilities might otherwise lead them to establish rebellions. The Powers That Be can even dangle the carrot of certain privileges not enjoyed by the rest of the population as an added incentive for talented individuals, enticing them to sell out and come over to the side of the ruling class.     Continue reading

NAIA COLLEGE BASEBALL POSTSEASON IS UNDERWAY

Conference Tournaments have begun in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). The Golden State Athletic Conference got things started.

GOLDEN STATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Hope International University RoyalsDAY TWO RESULTS – The 4 seeds – the HOPE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ROYALS – bounced back from their Day One loss to TMU to win a pair of games yesterday. In the Royals’ clash with the 3rd seeded VANGUARD UNIVERSITY LIONS neither team scored until Hope International U grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 3rd Inning.

ASK BALLADEER: GOVERNMENT SPENDING

Mascot with demo and repub headsWhen Balladeer’s Blog’s readers ask me for my genuine, actual opinion on a given subject I’m always glad to oblige. So here is the latest question and my 100% sincere opinion with no jokes or sarcasm.

Q: Your origins on the Left always show in how much you talk about preserving Social Security and Medicare. How do you really feel about government spending and getting it under control?

A: That requires a two-part answer. Part One: I think that America’s Third-World level cesspool of corruption that masquerades as a government is so far gone that the type of bloated spending packages which are so confusing that almost nobody can really tell where all the money is going have become the very raison d’etre of the Swamp.

THAT is how the corruption that is part and parcel of the Swamp operates and the Swamp-Dwellers will fight to protect it like the proverbial Iroquois sorcerer protecting their hidden heart.

That means I think that elected officials who want to get government spending under control need to grow up and accept the fact that a move like that (getting spending under control) will have to be the end goal, not the initial battle. In video game terms it will have to be the Boss Fight, something that you get to engage in after fighting your way through several other layers of corruption and graft.

mascot new look donkey and elephant headsI support President Trump’s efforts to Drain the Swamp but as we have seen he is making virtually a one-man stand. Both Democrats and Republicans oppose his efforts to put teeth to anti-corruption measures. It will be an uphill fight for him to simply continue the good work he has already accomplished for the poor and the working class, let alone control spending, which is, as I stated above, a desirable goal but one which he will need more bodies in Congress to accomplish.

It’s not something you can trust party labels on, since Republican Trash like Paul Ryan and John “Let’s fight wars all over the planet” McCain have been some of the biggest obstacles. Continue reading

FLASHMAN NOVELS: SIXTH PLACE

Alan Bates -better Flashman than MalcolmFor Balladeer’s Blog’s Number One Harry Flashman Novel click HERE  . For background info on George MacDonald Fraser’s infamous anti-hero Harry Paget Flashman you can also click that link.

Reaction to my list of The Top Five Harry Flashman Novels continues to come in, with readers wanting more Flashman reviews. Here’s my take on the novel which would have been in sixth place if I had done a list of my Top Six Harry Flashman Novels.

Flashman and the Mountain of Light6. FLASHMAN AND THE MOUNTAIN OF LIGHT (1990)

Time Period: The First Sikh War (1845-1846)

The Flashman Papers jump around to different periods of Harry Flashman’s life and this novel details our main character’s adventures following the events in Flashman’s Lady, published in 1977. Flashman’s Lady came in 3rd place in my rankings.

NOTE: The Mountain of Light of the novel’s title refers to the Koh-I-Noor (“Mountain of Light”) Diamond, which at the time belonged to the rulers of the Punjab in India and which features prominently in the story.

Synopsis: Queen Victoria’s least trustworthy Cavalry Officer, Harry Paget Flashman, is once again in the thick of things. A series of false starts to an all-out war have set things dangerously on edge in the Punjab, with a potential bloodbath in the offing if one false move is made.

Flashman and the Mountain of Light 2Harry being Harry, he STILL manages to find time for a brief fling with the wife of a fellow British Officer before getting thrust into the line of fire. And into the schemes and political machinations of the real-life Maharani Jeendan, her brother Jawaheer, the British East India Company and a fanatical real-life military sect called the Khalsa.

At the center of this tangled web, lurking like a thing alive, is the Koh-I-Noor Diamond, the Mountain of Light itself, passing from hand to hand – and in some cases navel to navel – while being coveted by nearly every figure in our story. Figures which include two real-life American mercenaries who partially inspired Kipling’s tale of The Man Who Would Be King.

The title and savage action of this Flashman novel certainly put one in mind of H. Rider Haggard’s writings but the story’s account of hedonism and political intrigues at the Punjab royal court in Lahore is more along the lines of Robert Graves’ I, Claudius.

Jeendan and LalThe deliciously decadent Maharani Jeendan is our protagonist’s main bedmate in his latest sword and sex adventure, followed closely by Mangla, the Maharani’s beautiful, calculating slave who had – as history confirms – engineered events to secretly become one of the wealthiest women of the Punjab despite her condition of servitude.     Continue reading

MUSLIM FASCIST ATROCITY ROUNDUP: APRIL 30th

Islam no democracy just IslamTo the Democrats and Labour the ONLY Muslims who are “authentic” and are even allowed to speak at college campuses are the ones who hate the Western World. The others are banned as “Western Triumphalists” who have “internalized Western oppression.” For one of my articles on those peace-loving Muslims who bravely fight for reform click HERE

On the other hand here are just a FEW of the most recent atrocities boasted about by the Muslim fascists that Democrat and Labour voters LOVE to encourage and grab photo ops with. To them THESE are Islam’s “authentic voices” – murderous, homophobic and misogynistic.

April 11th: Jandeikyula, Nigeria – Miyetti Allah, one of the local affiliates of the Global Muslim Fascist Murder Machine, killed FIFTY-ONE innocent people and injured 26 more. The number of Islamist groups competing for kills in Nigeria seems to grow by the month.

April 27th: Anderanboucane, Mali – Muslim Fascists gunned down and killed THIRTY-ONE innocent people.

islam-failApril 24th: Mbalon, Nigeria – Islamists opened fire on a Catholic Mass, killing NINETEEN innocent people and injuring 6 more. COEXISTENCE!

April 22nd: Gamboru, Nigeria – Boko Haram, one of the local affiliates of the Global Muslim Fascist Murder Machine, killed EIGHTEEN innocent people who were gathering wood.

April 28th: Awakassa, Mali – Muslim Fascists shot TWELVE innocent people to death. Continue reading

THE PRISONER (1967): ARRIVAL

Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the science fiction/ existential drama The Prisoner. For Part One, in which I examined the themes and concepts at play in the series click HERE

ArrivalEpisode Title: ARRIVAL

Fans of The Prisoner know that the exact order of the 17 episodes is up in the air since not even Patrick McGoohan, the show’s creator, star and prime creative force, was certain. However, there is no doubt that Arrival is the very first episode of the show (for obvious reasons).

The opening credits sequence is repeated for each episode (except for variations for Living in Harmony and for the very last episode, titled Fallout). That sequence presents our protagonist, the Prisoner (real name never revealed), disgustedly resigning from the Intelligence Service. Back at his home he is gassed into unconsciousness and awakens in an isolated, high-tech and dystopian prison-city that is called the Village.

The program’s nature as a Kafkaesque tale with science fiction trappings is established in this debut episode. The Prisoner is taken aback by the seemingly cheerful and storybook surface nature of the Village and the way that surface is at odds with the underlying air of fear and paranoia.

Prisoner psych wardAll inhabitants/ captives of the Village are either former Intelligence Operatives like himself, or scientists or figures from the government or military. And from all around the world, too, not just the West.

In the Cold War attitude of the time the Prisoner is obsessed with finding out “which side” the Villagekeepers are on, but as the series progresses it becomes clear that the Free World vs Communist World paradigm is merely part of the deception being played on the Village’s prisoners. And possibly the world at large, intriguingly enough.    Continue reading

POLITICAL FORTUNE COOKIES

Welcome back to Balladeer’s Blog, the only site on the web that equally criticizes both Democrats AND Republicans. I think we need Third Parties urgently.

POLITICAL FORTUNE COOKIES

mascot new look donkey and elephant headsFor condescending Democrats who can’t understand why working class and poor people OF ALL COLORS have come to despise them: “Just because you never have to deal with the negative consequences of all the wrong-headed and damaging policies that you pursue, don’t ever forget the suffering people who DO have to deal with those negative consequences.”

For American “teachers” (LMAO): “People who say that teaching is a political act should never be trusted with authority over vulnerable young minds.”

For Republican office-holders: “Governments spend money. Just deal with it.”

For Democrat Fascists on college campuses: “Remember the Best and the Brightest? You’re the Worst and the Dumbest.”

For Democrats in General: “Wherever there is disagreement it is NOT just one side who is being divisive.”

For YouTube users: “There is always Vid.me … A far superior setup.”

For Barack Obama: “Your shame over your horrible college grades is exceeded only by your shame over being such a weak, inept and crooked little man.”

For delusional Hillary supporters who are still making excuses for her humiliating loss to President Donald Trump, the new FDR and the new JFK: “H.C. is for Hillary Clinton … Also for Heinous Crimes … And Haiti Crusher … And for Human Cockroach.”
