Mantis Holocaust coverTHE AVENGERS Volume 1, Number 117 (November 1973)  Holocaust

The worldwide conflict between the Avengers and the Defenders continues this time around. This multi-part crossover story was done at a time before such crossover “special events” were going on all the time, so readers from back then would have been blown away by all this.

HOLOCAUST

dormammuSynopsis: This issue opens up in the Dark Dimension ruled by Dormammu, the flame-headed villain who – with help from the blinded Loki – manipulated the Defenders into trying to reassemble the scattered fragments of the Evil Eye of Avalon.

Dormammu is raging and ranting in his confusion over why the Avengers are opposing the Defenders in their efforts.

loki laughingThe Lord of the Dark Dimension doesn’t know that Loki secretly manipulated the Avengers into becoming involved because he grew suspicious about whether Dormammu would really cure his blindness and share the power of the Evil Eye.

Loki feigns ignorance as he and Dormammu resume monitoring events from the Dark Dimension.

Valkyrie rebornBATTLE FOUR: THE VALKYRIE VERSUS THE SWORDSMAN – The Avenger called the Swordsman has reached the Bolivian jungle in his Quin-Jet to search for his fragment of the Evil Eye of Avalon. The reader gets some character bits as Swordsy contemplates his checkered career on both sides of the law.

Mantis story holcaustHis respect for his lady-love Mantis and his gratitude toward her for getting him to go straight and rejoin the Avengers are prominently displayed as is his determination not to let down his fellow Avengers.

In the sky over a castle apparently built by a Nazi war criminal who escaped to Bolivia the Quin-Jet is attacked by the Defender called the Valkyrie astride the Black Knight’s winged horse Aragorn.

The Valkyrie uses her massive super-strength and the indestructible sword she appropriated from the incapacitated Black Knight to bring down the Quin-Jet. The Swordsman lands the crippled aircraft just outside the castle and pursues the Valkyrie inside, assuming that must be where the Bolivian fragment of the Eye is being held.  Continue reading

FOUR NEGLECTED MILITARY UNITS FROM AMERICAN WARS

As part of this Memorial Day weekend Balladeer’s Blog offers an examination of neglected areas of United States military history.

Oneida Nation's First Allies Unit

Oneida Nation’s First Allies Unit

4. THE ONEIDA NATION’S FIRST ALLIES UNIT

Conflict: Revolutionary War

Comment: The Oneida Nation of Native Americans were America’s first allies. During the Revolutionary War most Native American tribes sided with the British but the Oneida Nation, under Chief Shenendoah, led his people to ally themselves with the emerging United States. The Oneida alliance with the U.S. therefore PREDATED France’s recognition of an independent America.

The Oneida warriors fought alongside American forces throughout upstate New York, most notably at the Battles of Oriskany and Saratoga. They also provided desperately needed food and medical supplies for the Continental Army during the terrible winter at Valley Forge. Two treaties were signed and honored to this very day regarding Oneida sovereignty, retention of their land and a yearly ceremonial delivery of bolts of cloth to the Oneida leaders. That ceremony continues once a Continue reading

MOCK NEWS STORIES: SOME EXCERPTS

truth is the new hate speechBalladeer’s Blog takes a break from mock headlines to do random lines from mock news stories.

*** “You’re making us feel unsafe,” the howling mob of Democrats screamed as they  savagely beat the elderly, handicapped Trump supporter.

*** “And, in what the UK government is calling Operation: Watership Down, the authorities will be clamping down on anyone caught expressing anger against the perpetrators of the latest terrorist attack. ‘Masochistic self-flagellation and empty bromides about coexistence are the ONLY permissible responses,’ Theresa May warned.

*** “George Will and Bill Kristol praised Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan for his ongoing efforts to – as Will put it ‘Thwart the will of the voters and return the GOP to its proper role as the party of stuffy, clueless white men in suits.’ This was followed by Kristol jumping in with ‘Damn Trump for attracting more African-American and Latino voters than just about any other Republican has in nearly a century.”

*** “Mrs Clinton nodded and agreed that she has to publicly perpetuate the possibility of running again in 2020 in order to keep bribes flowing her way.”

*** “In general the decision itself was considered bad enough but the 4th Circuit Judges went further and said ‘We considered literally urinating on the graves of all the dead victims of Muslim terror attacks, especially from phony refugees, but decided that doing so might push you sheep to the point where you finally realize how thoroughly we laugh at you each and every day … Don’t be late paying your taxes now, you hear!”

“And, they added with glee, ‘DON’T YOU PEASANTS EVER FORGET THAT THE CONSTITUTION PROTECTS THE MUSLIM FASCISTS WHO WANT TO KILL YOU, BUT NEVER YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES!”   Continue reading

ADAM ANT: GOTTA BE A SIN

Adam Ant tuxedoBalladeer’s Blog once again focuses on Adam Ant (Stuart Leslie Goddard), the subject of my new “Give Them A Shoutout Before They’re Dead” feature.

Previously I presented looks at the Adam Ant hits Goody Two Shoes and Vive Le Rock plus Adam’s cover of the Doors’ Hello, I Love You. This time around it’s Gotta Be A Sin. The song is terrific and the video – which was made years before the film The Matrix – features multiple versions of  what you could call a blonde prototype for Trinity, sunglasses and all.

Adam’s performance in the video makes me wonder what he would have been like in a stage version of Cabaret in the Joel Grey role. Or in a very dark musical version of A Clockwork Orange.

Have a look and a listen:

MANTIS 5: THE AVENGERS/ DEFENDERS WAR CONTINUES

FOR PART 1 OF BALLADEER’S BLOG’S EXAMINATION OF MARVEL’S SUPERHEROINE MANTIS CLICK HERE

Mantis Defenders 9THE DEFENDERS Volume 1, Number 9 (October 1973) Divide and Conquer

This worldwide clash between the Avengers and the Defenders was a crossover story covered in multiple issues of each of their separate comic books. Mantis gets to shine once again as the mystery surrounding her deepens.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

The Silver Surfer, fresh from his battle with the Vision and the Scarlet Witch in French Polynesia, arrives back at Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. He carries with him the fragment of the Evil Eye of Avalon that he outfought the two Avengers for.

The Surfer tells the good Doctor about how the Avengers seem to be opposing the Defenders’ plan to reassemble the Evil Eye in order to free the superhero called the Black Knight from the spell that keeps him trapped in stone form.

Mantis divide and conquerNeither the Avengers nor the Defenders are aware that they are being manipulated by Dormammu – an enemy of Dr Strange and the Defenders – and by Loki, an enemy of Thor and the Avengers. The Avengers think they are preventing the Defenders from enacting revenge against the world over their various grievances, a revenge that the reassembled Evil Eye of Avalon will make unstoppable.

For their part, the Defenders think that collecting the six scattered fragments of the Evil Eye will restore the Black Knight to normal. Dormammu tricked them into thinking that, but actually that Lord of the Dark Dimension wants the Eye so that he can destroy both superteams AND our universe.    Continue reading

MUSLIM FASCISTS STRIKE IN MANCHESTER

My thoughts and sympathies are with the Manchester victims and their loved ones.

And it's MuslimsAnother day, another attack by Muslim fascists in the name of their blood-crazed religion. (If you doubt me on the “daily” part read my periodic Muslim Atrocity Roundups. This is a global conflict and not a day goes by without blood being shed.)

Salmen Abedi is the purported name of the Muslim fascist suicide bomber responsible for nearly two dozen deaths and for injuring over 120 more innocent people.

Muslim terror attack 10 step planThe Muslim attacker targeted a largely female crowd from around 6-18 years of age.

The political left is already defending the motives of the attacker … after their usual round of denying that it was yet another Muslim attack for as long as they could.

After a previous Muslim fascist attack, the Muslim mayor of London taunted  England that they need to “get used to it.”

Yes, in case you didn’t know, London elected a Muslim mayor last election, which act further discredits those constant claims of rabid Islamophobia in the Western World.   Continue reading
