FORGOTTEN TELEVISION: THE BUCCANEERS (1956-1957)

If you enjoyed Robert Shaw’s freebooting turn as the pirate Red Ned Lynch in the 1976 movie Swashbuckler you’ll love him as Captain Dan Tempest in this  series  from the 1950’s. Shaw was equal parts Errol Flynn and Jack Sparrow on the program, which featured him as the captain of the Sultana.

Tempest and his crew were former pirates pardoned and sent to sea as pirate hunters and as privateers against the Spanish, but they still found time to foil the sinister machinations of corrupt British authorities in the Bahamas, Jamaica and elsewhere. Fans of derring- d0 who are Continue reading →

Here’s a look at the players who advanced to the next level following their successful college careers at institutions that actually care about academics.

ASA AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

No Robert Downey, Jr, no problem! He did his best work in Greaser’s Palace, anyway. (I’m kidding!) Since the past few weeks in all our lives have seemed like just downtime between commercials for the heavily hyped Avengers movie being released today I figured I would mark the occassion with another acknowledgment of how butt- kickingly cool this logo and team name are.

College football’s ASA Avengers won one of Balladeer’s Blog’s  “20 Coolest” contests in 2010 and you can see why! That logo adorns their football helmets and merchandise, making their gear among the most stylish and distinctive in all of college sports.

The Avengers also Continue reading →

THE SHINTO MOON GOD TSUKUYOMI

TSUKUYOMI – Also spelled Tsukiyomi. The moon god and ruler of the night. In the Nihongi he is the son of both Izanami and Izanagi. In the Kojiki he is said to have been born from Izanagi’s right eye and in a third tradition supposedly sprang from a mirror in Izanagi’s right hand.

A prominent myth about him says that once he was being entertained by Ukemochi the goddess of Continue reading →

POSTSEASON COLLEGE BASEBALL CONTINUES

In NAIA baseball’s ongoing conference tournaments the Blue Mountain College Toppers (logo at left) are the biggest story so far. They came into the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament seeded 6th, but on Day 1 of the tourney they upset the number 1 seeds, the Freed Hardeman Lions, then yesterday on Day 2 the Toppers defeated the 4th- seeded Bethel (TN) Wildcats. Today they try to keep their upset mojo going when they take on the 2 seeds, the Union Bulldogs.

Meanwhile a few conference champions have already been crowned. The Lee Flames have won the Southern States Athletic Conference, the LSU- Shreveport Pilots (as in riverboat pilots ) took the Red River Athletic Conference title and the Continue reading →

ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY: PLUTOI (WEALTH GODS) C 429 BCE

“Their side’s billionaires are evil! Our side’s billionaires are wonderful!”

Balladeer’s Blog’s latest look at ancient Greek comedies deals with another work by Cratinus who, along with Aristophanes and Eupolis, constituted the Big 3 of Attic Old Comedy.

This time around I’ll examine the comedy Plutoi, aka Wealth Gods and the way in which it dealt with issues that are still relevant to us over 2,400 years later.

1ST ANNIVERSARY OF BIN LADEN GETTING FLUSHED

Rats get killed, cockroaches get killed, and Bin Laden got killed. One year after the death of this utter failure and rabid animal I figured what better time to repost one of my most popular comedy bits from last year. I posted an article joking about the possibility of Bin Laden’s wives getting their own reality show. Here it is again, complete with the Continue reading →

EVALUATING ESPN’S ON-AIR PERSONALITIES

Balladeer's Blog

Balladeer’s Blog

ESPN may not stand for Exclusively Sports Publicist’s Network but the mammoth outfit certainly acts like it. Their soft, “People magazine for athletes” approach to sports coverage makes them fun to watch and listen to in the same way watching bad movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space is fun. If you want actual sports journalism go to Sports Illustrated (SI.com) or Yahoosports, never ESPN.

It’s no coincidence that those other outfits are the ones who have broken every major sports scandal in recent years. ESPN is too thoroughly in bed with the executives in college and professional sports to want to damage their “product” by doing REAL investigative reporting. Here’s Balladeer’s Blog’s evaluation of the sports publicists who do on-air work at “the worldwide leader in suckup”.

Not pictured: Colin Cowherd

1. COLIN COWHERD – With the departure of Jim Rome to the cable outfit called CBS College Sports Cowherd gets the top spot by default. Colin towers over all the other on- air staff at ESPN by virtue of the fact that he has a life outside of sports and therefore doesn’t feel that winning games excuses criminal behavior like his colleagues do.

Cowherd also rejects the journalistic pretensions of the other ESPN sports publicists and repeatedly states that he considers his employer to be in the entertainment business, not the news business. Like all Continue reading →
