DEMOI (C 417 BC) ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY

For some prep as I at last get back into reviewing the surviving fragments of ancient Greek comedy every now and then, here’s my 2011 review of Demoi by Eupolis. Along with Aristophanes and Cratinus, Eupolis was one of the Big Three of Attic Old Comedy. Background info is HERE.

THE PREMISE

Demoi is considered to be Eupolis’ greatest political satire. The premise is simplicity itself. An Athenian named Pyronides, like many of his fellow citizens, is disgusted with the pettiness, corruption and incompetence of the current crop of political and military leaders in the great city-state. Thus motivated, Pyronides retrieves four of the greatest figures of Athens’ storied past from the Netherworld and brings them back with him so they may set things right.

THE PLAY

In my introductory post about AGC (see above) I illustrated the similar problems faced by the Athenians’ ancient experiment in popular rule and our own often teetering enterprise. Corruption, partisanship and a tendency to subordinate the general good in the name of personal gain were as rampant then as now.

As all societies are prone to do, the Athenians romanticized the leaders of the past, believing them to be of a heroic stature lacking in the current crop of Athenian politicians and generals. Pyronides sets out to restore the cultural and political capital of the Hellenic world to its glory days by descending into Hades’ realm and returning with Pericles, Miltiades, Aristeides and Solon the Lawgiver (just in case you thought I meant Solon the Bus Driver).  Continue reading

CAPTAIN MORS THE AIR PIRATE (1908-1911) STORIES TWENTY-ONE TO TWENTY-FIVE

For Balladeer’s Blog’s overview of the entire Kapitan Mors der Luftpirat series click HERE. For my look at the first five stories in the weekly text series click HERE.

THE PRISON ON DEVIL’S ISLAND – Near the mouth of the Orinoco River in French Guyana a huge deposit of diamonds has been discovered. Inmates of the notoriously hellish prison on nearby Devil’s Island have been making frenzied attempts at escape to go diamond hunting.

From around the world other people with a lust for diamonds are descending on the area. Our hero Kapitan Mors has also gotten word and has flown his air ship and its mixed European and Indian crew to grab their own share of precious gems to share with the world’s poor. The man running Devil’s Island uses the opportunity to try trapping Mors. Continue reading

TOGETHER WE STAND (1986-1987) FORGOTTEN TELEVISION

TOGETHER WE STAND (1986-1987) – With the new attention being paid to Ke Huy Quan/ Short Round in recent years, I decided to take a look at the sitcom he co-starred in with Elliott Gould, Dee Wallace Stone and others.

Gould and Stone played David and Lori Randall, who went the adoption route only to have Lori get pregnant after all, resulting in a houseful of kids, Ke Huy Quan among them.

Co-creator Sherwood Schwarz explained that this sitcom was a revival of a failed 1974 attempt at a spinoff from the Brady Bunch titled Kelly’s Kids.

The first episode unrealistically dealt with a social worker leaning on the Randalls to adopt two more children, Sam (Quan) and an African American girl named Sally (Natasha Bobo). But hey, My Mother the Car and The Flying Nun proved long ago that realism isn’t necessary.

Elliott Gould took part in filming 10 episodes, but only 6 of those aired. His character David died offscreen in a car accident, his 4 unaired episodes were ignored and the rest of the cast carried on under the new title Nothing is Easy.

NOTEWORTHY EPISODES: Continue reading

ROUNDUP OF NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS

Time for another current events roundup from Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog.

PRESIDENT TRUMP GETS ANOTHER HOSTAGE – TONY HOLDEN – FREED. THE MAN EXPRESSED HIS DEEP THANKS. – HE WAS TAKEN HOSTAGE IN 2022 UNDER THE BIDEN REGIME.

EVEN THE WASHINGTON POST ADMITS THAT THE STOCK MARKET HAS ALREADY MORE THAN MADE UP ALL THE LOSSES FROM THE MEDIA-INDUCED PANIC OVER TRUMP’S TARIFF ANNOUNCEMENTS IN APRIL. Remember when the media was claiming Trump was starting a depression? LOL Even CNBC admits the stock market is on a “record setting winning streak.”

YET ANOTHER DEMOCRAT – THIS ONE IN NEW JERSEY – CHARGED WITH THEFT AND FORGERY OF BALLOTS IN VOTE FRAUD CASE. The fight for election integrity continues. Hopefully an election as corrupt as the one in 2020 can be prevented from recurring.

AND YET ANOTHER HIGHER COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF TRUMP AND OVERRULES SHOWBOATING DEMOCRAT JUDGES WHO OVERREACHED. As predicted. More decisions that anti-Trump loons thought were “victories” for them have been shot down on appeal.

GEORGIA DEMOCRAT WHO RAN FOR OFFICE LAST YEAR ARRESTED IN CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING BUST. It becomes clearer and clearer why Democrats like to pretend child sex trafficking doesn’t happen and is just “a conspiracy theory”.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT ARRESTED FOR RANDOM SHOOTING SPREE ON TENNESSEE HIGHWAY

PRESIDENT TRUMP PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON FAMILIES OF AMERICAN CITIZENS WHO WERE KILLED BY DEMOCRAT-IMPORTED ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Trump comforts the families of victims while Democrats care only about violent illegals with MS-13 and Tren de Aragua ties.

TRUMP EFFECT: CHINA EASES FORTY BILLION DOLLARS IN U.S. IMPORTS AS THE START OF NEGOTIATIONS ON TARIFFS

BIDEN REGIME STATE DEPARTMENT ANALYST PLEADS GUILTY IN SIX HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT CASE. Did “the Big Guy” Joe Biden get his usual “10 percent”? Yet another reminder that the Biden Regime was one big crime family.

THE HYPNOTIC EYE (1960) ON THE TEXAS 27 FILM VAULT

In the middle 1980s/ Way down on Level 31 …

Before MST3K we had The Texas 27 Film Vault! Before Joel and Mike we had Randy and Richard! Balladeer’s Blog continues its nod to this forgotten cult show’s FORTIETH Anniversary year, since it debuted Saturday February 9th, 1985.

ORIGINAL BROADCAST DATE: Saturday April 12th, 1986 from 10:30pm to 1:00am.

Broadcast throughout Texas & Oklahoma and hosted as always by our Film Vault Technicians First Class Randy and Richard.

SERIAL: Radar Men from the Moon was the current serial being shown. This episode of The Texas 27 Film Vault featured Chapter Nine titled Battle in the Stratosphere. During the 12-week run of this serial one of the behind-the-scenes crew (no one remembers who at this point) would dress as Commando Cody, the hero of the serial, and occasionally interact with Randy and Richard during the comedy sketches.

FILM VAULT LORE: This was supposedly the favorite episode of the Film Vault Corp’s effects man Joe Riley, which is why he used the title The Hypnotic Eye for his post-T27FV television show, episodes of which are online.

SKETCHES : This episode aired when Randy still “outranked” Richard in the Film Vault Corps and so their relationship often had the “Main Character and Abused Second Banana” vibe like with Zacherle and My Dear, or Dr. Morgus and Chopsley or Dr. Forrester and TV’s Frank. (F-Troop fans might describe it as a “Sgt O’Rourke and Cpl Agarn vibe.”)

The Host Segments therefore featured Richard being subjected to the type of mutilation the hypnotized victims in The Hypnotic Eye were inflicting on themselves. Joe Riley’s special effect of Richard’s hair being set on fire was as intentionally laughable as the effect in the movie itself.

THE MOVIE: The Hypnotic Eye is one of the most beloved bad movies of the 1960s. Its hilariously campy trailer (HERE), its sinister Eurotrash villain and its Ed Wood-style police work all make it a true anti-classic. Jacques Bergerac, one-time husband of Ginger Rogers and a man whose accent makes him as hard to understand as Bela Lugosi and Arnold Schwarzeneggar, played Desmond, the magician who uses the title object to augment his hypnotic abilities to an enormous degree. BRITISH SUPERHEROES OF THE 1960s

This weekend’s escapist, light-hearted superhero post from Balladeer’s Blog looks at some of Great Britain’s homegrown superheroes from the 1960s. For their 1940s heroes click HERE.

GADGETMAN

Secret Identity: Burt Travis

Debuted: 1968

Origin: Burt Travis was the scientific genius who ran Travis Corporation. He used some of his inventions and the costumed identity of Gadgetman to fight criminals, aliens and other menaces.

Powers: Burt Travis had a hidden teleportation device in his office. When he wanted to become Gadgetman he would teleport to his secret headquarters and go into action. This hero could fly via jet-shoes, shoot assorted ray-guns called Gadget Guns and release a substance from his costume that made him slick and impossible to hold onto.

Gadgetman also piloted a flying Gadgetcar and Gadgetcycle. Burt Travis’ lab apprentice Gary Stewart was really Gimmick-Kid, with a costume and gadgetry similar to Gadgetman.

CAT-GIRL

Secret Identity: Cathy Carter

Debuted: 1969

NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS ROUNDUP: MAY SECOND

Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog presents another current events roundup from an America where unhinged anti-Trumpers are pretending that he should have been able to fix everything that Joe Biden destroyed in just a few months. Hilarious!

HUD SECRETARY SCOTT TURNER PRAISES PRESIDENT TRUMP’S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS FOR THE WAY HE UNDID BIDEN’S POLICIES THAT “CRIPPLED OUR NATION.” He also pointed out how under his leadership HUD will return to its mission “to serve the most vulnerable population of our country, as it pertains to housing affordability, as it pertains to homelessness, disaster recovery, streamlining processes, and being efficient and effective.” (NOTE: Under Biden homelessness increased eighteen percent.)

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN NORTH CAROLINA CHARGED IN HOME INVASION AND KIDNAPPING OF A WOMAN AND HER ELEVEN-MONTH-OLD DAUGHTER. Are Democrats accomplices to this crime?

U.S. ADDED 177,000 NEW JOBS IN APRIL, HIGHER THAN PREDICTED.

STATE DEPARTMENT REVEALS THE BIDEN REGIME’S FILES TARGETING AMERICAN CRITICS OF THAT REGIME. Was any department NOT weaponized by Biden? This is at least as bad as the J. Edgar Hoover files that Democrats spent decades hyperventilating about. As usual, they feel when The Party does it, it’s okay.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT IN TEXAS CHARGED WITH MURDERING A MAN IN FRONT OF HIS FAMILY. Are Democrats accomplices to this crime?

KASH PATEL’S FBI ARRESTS TWO ON CHARGES OF OPERATING AN INTERNATIONAL CHILD TRAFFICKING ENTERPRISE. Democrats hardest hit, since they like to pretend that child trafficking doesn’t happen.

ROBERT F. KENNEDY CALLS OUT JOE BIDEN’S HHS OVER HOW IT BECAME A “COLLABORATOR IN CHILD TRAFFICKING.”

SITE FOR TRACKING ALL THE INVESTMENTS AND MANUFACTURING PRESIDENT TRUMP IS BRINGING TO THE U.S.

FACULTY LOUNGE FASCIST: DEMOCRAT TEACHER CALLS FOR THE SECRET SERVICE TO KILL PRESIDENT TRUMP AND HIS SUPPORTERS. Among her hate-filled remarks “The Secret Service has the perfect opportunity, if they choose to step up and take it. You are the ones with power. Coordinate. Take out every single person who supports Trump’s illegal, immoral, unconstitutional acts.”

BODY-CAM FOOTAGE OF DEMOCRAT IDOL KILMAR ABREGO GARCIA DURING PULLOVER INVESTIGATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING. Democrats, aren’t there any suffering American citizens that you can find who deserve becoming a Cause Celebre instead of this illegal immigrant gangster?

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION CONTINUES TO DEPOLITICIZE THE FBI AND HAVE IT FOCUS ON FIGHTING CRIME RATHER THAN TARGETING POLITICAL DISSENT.

STEPHEN MILLER BLASTS THE PRIVILEGED ONE-PERCENTERS FROM DEMOCRAT MEDIA OUTLETS WHO SHILL FOR MS-13 AND TREN DE ARAGUA. Continue reading

SILENT FILMS DIRECTED BY ALICE GUY-BLACHE

Alice Guy-Blache (1873-1968) was a French film pioneer and was also the first woman to direct movies. Alice worked for the Gaumont Film Company and from 1896 to 1906 was Gaumont’s Head of Production.

Some sources say she was the only woman in the world directing movies during that period.

Among her films:

THE FAIRY OF THE CABBAGES (1896) – A light-hearted short that ran less than 2 minutes, this movie depicted a costumed woman as the title fairy. The premise was the old folk notion that children were found under cabbages in a cabbage patch. It was a lesser-known variation of the stork tale. The short was remade in 1900 and 1902.

PIERRETTE’S ESCAPADES (1900) – A woman changes from a pink dress to a green dancing outfit. She proceeds to dance alone and soon finds the stock clown character Pierrot dancing with her. The clown tries kissing her but is rebuffed. Next, the stock character Harlequin dances with her, impresses her and the two share a kiss as the 2-minute production comes to a close. Some frames were hand-tinted.

ESMERALDA (1905) – The oldest known movie version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Alice had been shepherding Gaumont’s movies away from mere visual spectacle and on to narrative filmmaking.

This 10-minute production is, like so many silent films, lost to us. Denise Becker starred as the title character and Henry Vorins played Quasimodo. Continue reading

SCREAMBOOK (1984) BAD MOVIE REVIEW

SCREAMBOOK (1984) – Ever see a feature length horror film written, produced and directed by a 13-year-old? And with nearly all the roles – of all ages – played by fellow teenagers? Obviously, I’ll be grading this flick on a curve in this review.

This anthology movie was the very first product of the legendary “horror himbo” Joe Zaso. Not Zasa like in Godfather III, but Zaso. An enterprising teenager in the 1980s, Zaso formed his first production company at age 16 and is to this day active in the film industry.

Joe is also a bodybuilder and keeps himself in top condition which is how he acquired the “himbo” nickname over the decades. His productions are still unpretentious B-movies but this review deals with his very primitive first effort, so as I mentioned above, it’s not fair to look at it like it was a professional piece of work.  Continue reading
