Balladeer’s Blog’s recent look at Eight Neglected Monsters for Halloween Season was a big hit with readers, so here are more.
DEVIL-BUG
First Appearance: The Monks of Monk Hall (1844-1845)
Cryptid Category: Malformed Human
Lore: This deformed and depraved man-monster grew up in Monk Hall as the son of one of the Hall’s members and one of the prostitutes enslaved there. He was squat, incredibly strong and grotesquely ugly with one large gaping eye and one small, withered, empty eye socket on his face.
Devil-Bug – the only name he had ever known – worked as a combination doorman, bouncer and executioner in the vile mansion called Monk Hall in Philadelphia. He killed on command and secreted the corpses deep in the sub-basements of the sinister mansion.
The unwholesome figure slept in a chilly dank room with the body of one of his victims lying next to him. Devil-Bug even used coffins – both occupied and unoccupied – as furniture in his room. Continue reading
I make no secret of the fact that years ago I was a Democrat, but that increasingly unhinged political party drove me and so many others to leave it and I became an Independent Voter. The courageous Tulsi Gabbard followed a path that is very familiar to the rest of us who decided to
Welcome to the Party Exodus, Ms. Gabbard! Among her other remarks:
THE NIGHTMARE ENDS ON HALLOWEEN (supercut) – Back in 2004 Chris R. Notarile wrote and directed one of the most acclaimed fan films in the horror genre with The Nightmare Ends on Halloween. Following the comparative disappointment of Freddy vs Jason the previous year, Notarile produced a short film pitting Freddy Krueger of Nightmare on Elm Street fame against Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise.
Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog presents another roundup of news regarding the Biden Crime Family and its capos.

THAT WAS NUMBER FIIIVE! – In the NAIA, the number 7 team in the nation – the INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS – traveled to face the 5th ranked MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS. The focus was on defense as the Wildcats led by a mere 9-3 count at Halftime. After a scoreless 3rd Quarter, Indiana Wesleyan won out 17-10 in the 4th.
AND NUMBER SIX CAME TUMBLING AFTER – Staying in the NAIA for a moment, the 12th ranked BETHEL (KS) THRESHERS hosted the country’s number 6 team – the SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS. The Threshers put the Moundbuilders on Upset Alert at the Half with a 14-13 edge, then outscored them from there 17-10 for a 31-23 win.
GETTING A JUMP ON THE WEEKEND – On Friday night NCAA Division 3’s ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS won a 23-21 Instant Classic against the visiting COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY LIONS ### And the NAIA’s DORDT UNIVERSITY DEFENDERS won 44-29 at the MOUNT MARTY UNIVERSITY LANCERS.
For this weekend’s escapist superhero post Balladeer’s Blog will go with a Halloween theme and examine the Marvel Comics character Gabriel, often called an exorcist and demon or devil hunter.
HAUNT OF HORROR Vol 2 #2 (July 1974)
Father Lazar goes to the Empire State Building and pushes the button for the 13th Floor, which does not really exist but IS the way to enter Gabriel’s other-dimensional office. That office is cluttered with occult tomes on exorcism and once Lazar enters, he is greeted by Gabriel’s sultry assistant Desadia.
GALLOPING TO A WIN – The KENTUCKY STATE THOROBREDS scored 4 rushing Touchdowns on the road against the SAVANNAH STATE TIGERS. A 7-0 1st Quarter lead for the Thorobreds turned into a 21-6 advantage by Halftime. Each team added another TD to their tally in the 3rd Quarter before a scoreless 4th as KSU won out 28-13.
TIGER ON TIGER VIOLENCE – In this game the EDWARD WATERS UNIVERSITY TIGERS got off the schneid for 2022 against the visiting MOREHOUSE COLLEGE MAROON TIGERS. The Tigers were on top of their Maroon opponents 28-7 by the Half and kept up the pressure from there. The final score was Edward Waters 49 Maroon Tigers 20.
MR. GRUBBE’S NIGHT WITH MEMNON (1843) – Written by Albert Smith and republished in 1857, this tale centered around one Mister Withers Grubbe, an elderly inhabitant of the western part of London. Grubbe is an enthusiast when it comes to ancient history among other topics and visits a London Museum to see their new exhibit of Egyptian antiquities.
After spending time marveling at assorted statues of various sizes and a mummy identified as Memnon, Withers finds a quiet corner to sit down for a rest. He falls asleep and when he wakes up, he discovers it is long past closing time and somehow he was overlooked when the museum was locking up.
THE MINI-MUNSTERS (1973) – This children’s cartoon version of The Munsters originally aired on October 27th, 1973 as one of the hour-long (including commercials) episodes of the second season of ABC’s Saturday Superstar Movie. That version was 44 minutes long without commercials. ABC later edited it down into a VERY incoherent 22-minute version that they proceeded to combine with commercials to make a half-hour Halloween cartoon which they would broadcast into the 1980s.
Not that the 44-minute version is a masterpiece, but it holds together much better than the edited version. You can judge for yourself because no less than THREE versions of The Mini-Munsters are available online: The original 44-minute version in color, the 22-minute version in color AND a black & white version of the 44-minute original.
