THE BOD SQUAD (1974) BAD MOVIE REVIEW

THE BOD SQUAD (1974) – Hong Kong Cinema’s Shaw Brothers helped produce this cross-cultural martial arts exploitation flick that plays like an Andy Sidaris film crossed with a WIP movie from the 70s.

Like most Psychotronic classics, The Bod Squad has been released under several different titles, in this case Virgins of the Seven Seas and increasingly suggestive tags as its reputation for kung fu t&a learned at the knee of Sensei Russ Meyer grew. The joke is on anybody who watches this flick with lecherous intentions, since it never comes close to living up to those “aren’t we naughty” alternate titles like Enter the Seven Virgins Continue reading

THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E. (1966-1967) FORGOTTEN TELEVISION

THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E. (1966-1967) – This spinoff series from (What else?) The Man from U.N.C.L.E. starred Stefanie Powers as superspy April Dancer. Like Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, April worked for the United Network Command for Law & Enforcement. Her series lasted just one season of 29 hour-long episodes.

Leo G. Carroll portrayed Mr. Waverly, Dancer’s boss, just like he did for Solo and Kuryakin over at Man … April’s colleague Mark Slate was played by Noel Harrison, Rex’s son.

STANDOUT EPISODES:

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – THE MOONGLOW AFFAIR: Airing on February 25th, 1966, this backdoor pilot for The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. had Mary Ann Mobley as new agent April Dancer. She replaced the incapacitated Solo and Kuryakin to stop the establishment of a lunar presence by the evil organization T.H.R.U.S.H. (Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity).

THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E.

THE DOG-GONE AFFAIR – Yes, just like its parent series, this show used the title format of “The ______ Affair” for every episode. This debut story saw April Dancer, now played by Stefanie Powers, sent to the Greek islands to thwart a THRUSH plan for drugging selected targets with a virus which will make them move very sluggishly.

April transports a dog whose fleas contain the antidote to THRUSH’s virus. Guest starring Luciana Paluzzi, Beth Brickell and Susan Brown. Continue reading

NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS ROUNDUP: SEPTEMBER TWENTY-NINTH

Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog does a Monday current events roundup from a country where the Democrats continue killing and burning and calling for even more killing and burning. And where more and more cowards seem to be saying to themselves “Democrats are far more likely to use violence against me than Republicans are, so I’ll do what the Democrats say and blame the dead victims for all this.”

ATTACK ON MICHIGAN CHURCH: THE AFTERMATH CONTINUES.

DEMOCRAT SENATOR JOHN FETTERMAN COURAGEOUSLY PUBLICIZES A STUDY IN WHICH EVEN FAR-LEFT AXIOS ADMITS LEFT-WING VIOLENCE IS AT A THIRTY-YEAR HIGH. More HERE. Fetterman deserves high praise for this kind of non-partisanship. Surely he knows this puts him in the crosshairs of his Party’s increasingly bloodthirsty fanatics. And I’m impressed Axios did this study.

SENATOR FETTERMAN ALSO TARGETS THE DEMOCRATS’ EXTREME RHETORIC LIKE CALLING PEOPLE “HITLER”, ETC.

DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM PUTS A TARGET ON WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF STEPHEN MILLER BY POSTING IN ALL CAPS “STEPHEN MILLER IS A FASCIST.” Posobiec states “They know exactly what they’re doing” HERE. There is no way ANY Democrat does not recognize that that’s “a dog whistle” (as Democrats love to say) for the Party’s unhinged zealots.

KRUISER: “DEMOCRATS LIE AND PEOPLE DIE.

DEMOCRAT PARTY

DEMOCRAT MEDIA OUTLET NBC USES THEIR PROPAGANDA PROGRAM LAW & ORDER: SVU TO DEPICT ICE AGENTS PROTECTING RAPISTS, ETC. It’s a win-win for the Democrats because if such propaganda goes unchallenged, they benefit. And if reasonable people call it out, they claim it violates their First Amendment rights.

Let me remind people of Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson’s remark in the case of Terminiello vs Chicago that “the Constitution is not a suicide pact. Constitutional protections must be balanced with the need for societal survival and order, especially during times of crisis.”      (And since 2025’s Democrats only view the world through television shows and movies, I’ll point out for them that Jackson was portrayed by Alec Baldwin in the year 2000 miniseries Nuremberg, so they have the Party’s permission to like him.)

IN DEMOCRAT “SANCTUARY” STATE ILLINOIS, PROTESTERS CHANT “KILL ICE! SHOOT ICE!”       ELSEWHERE, A GRAND JURY INDICTS THREE PEOPLE FOR STREAMING THEIR STALKING OF AN ICE AGENT AND DOXXING HIS HOME’S LOCATION. More HERE. Just another wink and a nudge to violent Democrats.

TRANSGRESS WITH ME: SEPTEMBER TWENTY-SEVENTH

Balladeer’s Blog resumes my recurring item Transgress with Me in a slightly altered format, but it’s still only for the politically daring.

ANOTHER BRAVE WOMAN EXPLAINS WHAT DROVE HER AWAY FROM THE DEMOCRATS. “I see increasing numbers of so-called liberals cheering censorship and defending violence as a response to speech.”

COURAGEOUS PROFESSOR DEFIES THE CHURCH OF IRRATIONAL THOUGHT AND POLITICAL INTOLERANCE. “Reasoning requires you to understand truth claims, even truth claims that you think are false or bad or just icky. Most of you have been taught to label things with various “isms” which prevent you from understanding claims you find uncomfortable or difficult.”

MOTHER JONES COMPARES PRESIDENT TRUMP TO FDR, TRUMAN, SERPICO, BRUBAKER AND MORE.

DEMOCRAT DONNA BRAZILLE COURAGEOUSLY SPEAKS OUT ABOUT HILLARY CLINTON’S CORRUPTION OF THE DNC AND ROBBING BERNIE SANDERS OF THE 2016 NOMINATION.

THE DEFENDERS: VALKYRIE’S QUEST AND MORE (1974-1975)

This weekend’s light-hearted, escapist superhero post looks at the Defenders from where my previous post about them left off.

DEFENDERS Vol 1 #17 (Nov 1974)

Title: Power Play

Villains: The Wrecking Crew

Defenders Roster: Dr Strange, Hulk, Valkyrie, Nighthawk and Power Man (Luke Cage)

Synopsis: This story opens up an undetermined amount of time after the previous story, in which the newest Defender Son of Satan (Daimon Hellstrom) helped the team rescue the Hulk from Hell and Asmodeus.

Kyle Richmond (Nighthawk) has used some of his massive wealth to convert the Richmond Riding Academy on Long Island into a secret high-tech headquarters for the Defenders, so that they don’t have to keep using Dr Strange’s Greenwich Village home for such purposes. Continue reading

SEPTEMBER TWENTY-SIXTH ROUNDUP OF NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS

Time for another current events roundup from Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog, coming to you from an America where bloodthirsty Democrats continue to kill and to call for even more violence.

PRIVILEGED WHITE TERRORISTS OF ANTIFA (KLANTIFA) ONCE AGAIN CALL FOR MORE KILLING AND OTHER VIOLENCE.

THREE ARRESTED IN SHOOTING OF YOUTH BASEBALL COACH WHILE HE WAS LEADING HIS TEAM IN A PRAYER. Sorry, Democrats, he’s still alive! Arrested were Mahmood Abdelsalam Rababah, Ahmad Mawed, and Mustafa Mohammad Matalgah. I’m sure blackface performer Jimmy Kimmel will be claiming Mahmood, Ahmad and Mustafa were Trump supporters any minute now.

CORRUPT FORMER FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY INDICTED. Hey, no one is above the law. More HERE.

TRUMP EFFECT: THE U.S. ECONOMY GROWS EVEN MORE THAN PREDICTED UNDER PRESIDENT TRUMP’S POLICIES. He is the greatest president for the working class and the poor during my lifetime.

TRUMP ASKS DEMOCRATS TO “STOP DEMONIZING LAW ENFORCEMENT” IN WAKE OF LATEST DEMOCRAT-INCITED SHOOTING AT ICE FACILITY. The shooter missed the ICE agents he targeted and accidentally killed two illegal immigrants in custody instead. More HERE.

PRESIDENT ALIYEV USES HIS U.N. ADDRESS TO ONCE AGAIN THANK TRUMP FOR BROKERING THE PEACE DEAL BETWEEN AZERBAIJAN AND ARMENIA.

ALSO, QUATAR’S PRIME MINISTER CALLS PRESIDENT TRUMP THE “ONLY ONE” IN THE WORLD WHO CAN ACHIEVE PEACE IN GAZA

MORE ABOUT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FINDING AND STOPPING A PLOT TO DEFRAUD FOURTEEN BILLION, SIX HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS FROM MEDICARE, MEDICAID AND OTHERS. I will point out again that the corporations and other white-collar criminals that Trump is exposing like this keep growing more desperate to destroy him. No one else has been as successful against America’s cesspool of corruption as President Trump. Continue reading

ALCAEUS: ANCIENT GREEK COMEDIES

For this installment of my examinations of Greek comedies I will focus on one of the ancient Greek comedians whose entire corpus is very, very, VERY fragmentary, touching briefly on all of their known works. For background info on ancient Greek comedy plus my previous reviews click here: https://glitternight.com/ancient-greek-comedies/

ALCAEUS – This comic playwright came along for the tail end of Attic Old Comedy. Alcaeus’ career ranged from approximately 405 BC to the 380s BC and we have fragmentary remains of eight comedies from an unknown total body of work.

1. TRAGI-COMEDY – This play gave comedic treatment to the traditional rivalry between comedy and tragedy on the ancient Athenian stage. The comedy had fun with the inherent tensions between the two dramatic forms, including the fact that tragedy took pains to preserve the audience’s suspension of disbelief while comedy reveled in bursting the dramatic illusion via constant meta-theatrical breaking of the fourth wall.

Tragedy was the long-standing, prestigious and revered art form while comedy was the comparative newcomer and was still perceived as an upstart medium by the established writers of tragedy. One might also think of the Strauss opera Capriccio   with its light-hearted rivalry between the music and the libretto in operas, with a writer of each claiming greater importance. Continue reading

THE CRYBABY KILLER (1958) ON THE TEXAS 27 FILM VAULT

In the middle 1980s/ Way down on Level 31 …

Before MST3K we had The Texas 27 Film Vault! (I often emphasize this to cut down on freakouts by people who don’t pay attention to the broadcast dates and accuse this show of ripping off MST3K, which is impossible because this show came first.)

EPISODE ORIGINALLY BROADCAST: Per another Texas 27 Film Vault fan Saturday June 15th, 1985 from 10:30pm to 1:00am.

SERIAL: Before showing The Crybaby Killer our members of the Film Vault Corps (“the few, the proud, the sarcastic”) showed an episode of the Mascot Serial The Phantom Empire (1935).

In that classically campy serial Gene Autry played a singing cowboy who saves the world from an advanced underground civilization that comes complete with killer robots who wear cowboy hats.

FILM VAULT LORE: The movie ticket give-away this week was for Prizzi’s Honor.

THE MOVIE:

THE CRY BABY KILLER (1958) – Jack Nicholson made his film debut in this Roger Corman production. Jack plays a JD who mistakenly thinks he has shot two rival gang members to death and, believing he has nothing to lose, grabs hostages and holes up in a standoff with the police. Continue reading
