VORTEX (1982) MOVIE REVIEW

vortexVORTEX (1982) – Written and directed by Beth B and Scott B, this independent sci-fi detective film starred cult figure Lydia Lunch and actor James Russo. This is one of those movies made with so little money – some of it from the National Endowment for the Arts – that it can’t really be held to the same standards as mainstream releases of its time.

Vortex, a murder mystery involving corporate and governmental corruption, is a fun relic of the days when indy filmmakers did not have access to the kind of technology that such mavericks do today. Here in 2022 it’s possible to buy hand-held equipment that would automatically make one’s movie project look better than many 1980s efforts. However, that does not make today’s filmmakers any more talented than those who came before them.

To be kind, Vortex was one of those films in which the ideas being presented and the bold images being shown on screen were the true point. Solid acting and expensive special effects were only occasionally part of the equation. Continue reading

DEMOCRATS VS THE REST OF US: APRIL 11th

democrats hate free speechLong ago I was, I’m ashamed to say, a member of the increasingly deranged and hate-filled Democrat party before I left it to become an Independent Voter. Anyone mindlessly feeling “My political party, right or wrong” is not worth listening to on any issue.

MORE ABOUT THE INTERMINGLED FINANCES OF CROOKED JOE BIDEN AND HIS UNDERBOSS HUNTER BIDEN. More HERE. More HERE. And HERE.

PUTIN’S RUSSIA WILL MAKE BILLIONS THANKS TO CORRUPT JOE BIDEN’S DEAL WITH IRAN. More HERE. The thuggish Biden still talks tough about Putin while funneling money to the war criminal in reality.

DEMOCRATS AT THE WASHINGTON POST BLUNTLY CALLING TO USE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO CUT WORKING CLASS WAGES. So does this mean they’re finally abandoning their frequent lie that illegal immigration doesn’t hurt wages for citizens? Typical Democrat pattern – lie and lie for years, then when your lie is exposed, pretend the thing you claimed wasn’t happening is really a good thing!

THE DEMOCRATS’ FBI EXPOSED IN COURT FOR THEIR ABSURD FABLE ABOUT A PLANNED ABDUCTION OF GOVERNOR WHITMER IN MICHIGAN. More HERE. Remember when anti-Trump loons believed the lies that Trump was part of the plan to abduct her? Trump-haters are foolish enough to believe anything.

BIDEN REGIME FIGURE ADMITS SHARING INTEL WITH CHINA WAS WRONG. Buying Joe Biden was the best investment the Chinese government ever made.

YET ANOTHER EXPOSE ABOUT VOTE FRAUD IN FIVE SWING STATES IN 2020. The 2020 presidential election was as corrupt and tainted as the 1876 and year 2000 presidential elections. Continue reading

IRON MAN: 1970s CLASSICS 2 – THANOS, SUB-MARINER AND THE BLOOD BROTHERS

For Part One of these Iron Man 1970s classics click HERE.

im 54IRON MAN Vol 1 #54 (January 1973)

Title: Sub-Mariner: Target for Death

Villain: Moon Dragon (Her first appearance)

NOTE: This issue was co-written and co-illustrated by Bill Everett, who created the Sub-Mariner back in 1939 (BEFORE Aqua-Man), when Marvel Comics was known as Timely Comics.

Synopsis: We pick up an unknown amount of time after the previous issue. Tony Stark is now in Seattle, restructuring much of the Stark International corporate activities there to fit into his company’s new direction of no weapons manufacturing.

Our hero reflects to himself how the mysterious new supervillain the Black Lama escaped in our previous installment after his disciple Raga was defeated. (The Black Lama will emerge as a major adversary of Iron Man in the near future.)

Moon DragonElsewhere, deep below the waters of the Pacific Ocean, a vessel constructed through the superior technology of the Eternals of Titan travels like a submarine for the moment. This vessel launches a futuristic satellite into orbit, a satellite with cloaking tech and other capabilities.

On board that subaquatic vessel is Moon Dragon (Heather Douglas), currently using the idiotic nom de guerre “Madame MacEvil.” (LMAO) Besides the stupid name, Marvel’s writers had clearly not yet fully decided on her backstory or on what role she would play in the Thanos War being set up in this issue. HAMMETT (1982) – MOVIE REVIEW

HammettHAMMETT (1982) – Directed by Wim Wenders and produced by Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios, Hammett is a criminally neglected valentine to Hard-Boiled Detective Stories and Film Noir. The flick is based on the novel by Joe Gores.

The stories about the behind the scenes chaos and conflicts surrounding the production of this movie are legion. Pre-production work began in 1975 and by the time it was released in 1982 multiple cast and story changes had taken place and Coppola himself re-shot more than a third of the film.

In the way that Time After Time presented a whimsical “what if” adventure featuring H.G. Wells having a real time machine, Hammett serves up iconic detective novelist Dashiell Hammett getting caught up in solving a real-life mystery.

The timing is excellent, with the story being set in the late 1920s, after Hammett was no longer working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency but before he became a successful author. The tale begins with our hero – played by Frederic Forrest – typing out one of his penny-a-word Pulp stories for Black Mask Magazine, which was to detective fiction what Weird Tales was to horror and sci-fi.

hammett 2Booze and coughing fits figure prominently in the movie, as you would expect given a protagonist who was an alcoholic with tuberculosis. For the sake of convenience the story that Hammett just finished before blacking out was one featuring his character the Continental Op (as in an operative for the fictional Continental Detective Agency).

Hammett awakens to find his most recent work being read by Jimmy Ryan (Peter Boyle), his old mentor from his Pinkerton days. Ryan jokes with “Sam” (Samuel Dashiell Hammett was his full name if you’re new to all things Hammett) that the “man with no name” in the story seems to be based on him (Ryan) and the way he operates.

Eventually Jimmy gets to the point: he saved Hammett’s life when our hero was new at detective work, and Ryan is finally calling in the debt that Sam owes him for that. The former colleague thus lures Hammett back into detective work for one last case. Continue reading

DEMOCRAT ATROCITY ROUNDUP: APRIL 6th

democrat republican otherIndependent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog comes to you from the Biden Crime Family’s corporate fascist kleptocracy, where Democrats try to dictate what the rest of us are allowed to say, wear, post on the internet, etc. Many of their oppressive actions would not be possible without the utter worthlessness of elected Republicans, whose apparent motto continues to be “Screw our constituents! As long as we remain wealthy enough to survive what the Democrats unleash, that’s all that matters!”

BIDEN’S INFLATION HAS CAUSED RENTS TO SKYROCKET – ONE BEDROOM APARTMENTS HAVE GONE UP 98%, TWO BEDROOM APARTMENTS HAVE GONE UP 100%. The Biden Regime’s war on the working class and the poor continues unabated.

ANOTHER REPORT ABOUT UNDERBOSS HUNTER BIDEN FUNNELING MONEY. More HERE. And HERE. And HERE. And HERE. And remember, all of this was exposed before the forever tainted 2020 presidential election, but Democrat media and social media outlets banned the information to protect the Biden Campaign.

A FLIGHT TO THE MOON (1813) – ANCIENT SCIENCE FICTION

a flight to the moonA FLIGHT TO THE MOON (1813) – Written by George Fowler. This story introduces readers to Randalthus (no last name given), an 1800s American man who has come to regard the moon with a mixture of near-pagan worship and pioneer longing.

Randalthus, who often goes by the shortened name Rand, is admiring the moon as he does nearly every night when a beautiful female alien figure appears to him.  Having read the adoring thoughts that our narrator directs at Earth’s satellite, she has come to grant him his wish to visit the moon and meets its peoples.

She wraps Randalthus in the white glow which surrounds her and flies the two of them to the moon. Randalthus recounts experiencing gravitational changes during the flight and eventual landing on the moon. Continue reading

JIREL OF JOIRY: CHAPTER LINKS

Jirel of JoiryAn alert reader reminded me that I did not remember to put up a blog post with links to all my reviews of female author C.L. Moore’s six Jirel of Joiry pulp stories from the 1930s. Here is that collection of links in one convenient blog post.

BLACK GOD’S KISS (1934) – The first story featuring Jirel of Joiry, a sword-wielding woman warrior from late Medieval France. From Castle Joiry she leads her army in frequent raids on rival domains while often battling mind-boggling supernatural menaces. Jirel really was the kind of red-haired action heroine that people think of Red Sonja as being, but Robert E Howard’s character Red Sonya (not Sonja) was from the 1520s, not the Hyborean Age, and used guns as well as swords.

This debut tale introduces Jirel, Father Gervase and the Jason Momoa-esque Guillaume the Conqueror. Our heroine enters a vile netherworld to secure a supernatural weapon. Click HERE. Continue reading
