The adventures of the mythical Jewish monster the Golem in the present day continued last night in this award- winning cable series that has riveted the nation like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and True Blood. So far in this second season the heroic Golem is trapped in an enormous kaiju-height form as a result of last year’s season-ending cliffhanger. Continue reading

PULP HERO NORTHWEST SMITH: STORIES FIVE AND SIX
Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of another neglected pulp hero – in this case Northwest Smith. Created by the female author C.L. Moore in the 1930′s Northwest Smith was a ruthless outer-space smuggler and mercenary decades before Han Solo. With his Venusian partner Yarol at his side and armed with a trusty blaster Smith roamed the solar system in his deceptively fast spaceship The Maid. In the course of their criminal pursuits the two often found themselves in the role of reluctant heroes, sometimes with the fate of entire planets at stake. For more on Northwest Smith and other neglected pulp heroes click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/
5. JULHI (1935) – After a smuggling run to Venus Northwest Smith foolishly lets his guard down in an underworld tavern and gets shanghaied away to the Venusian island called Vonng. Smith is the latest kidnap victim from lowlife hangouts to wake up weaponless on the deserted island as a sacrifice to Julhi, a lovely yet monstrous creature with a beautiful upper body but multiple lower limbs.
Julhi is just one of a race whose dimension shares the same space as Vonng’s crumbled ruins but where time passes much more slowly than in our realm. The story wouldn’t be out of place on the renewed Doctor Who series. Julhi and her kind are psychic vampires, draining memories and emotions from their prey like a traditional vampire drains blood to survive. Continue reading

COLLEGE BASEBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RESULTS FROM MAY 1st
* GREAT PLAINS ATHLETIC CONFERENCE *
MORNING GAMES – The 7th seeded MOUNT MARTY COLLEGE LANCERS shocked the country yesterday with their SEVENTEEN to FIVE lambasting of the 2nd seeded NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS. The Lancers led 3-1 at the end of the 1st Inning and never looked back enroute to this colossal upset. ###
And speaking of shockers the BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS came in as the 8 seeds but toppled the TOP SEEDED DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS 3-1! ### The 5th seeded DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS kept the upset mojo going by beating the 4th seeded MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS in an 8-1 buttkicking. ### And the 3rd seeded MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS were the only higher seed to win in the morning games. The Warriors eviscerated the 6th seeded HASTINGS COLLEGE BRONCOS to the tune of ELEVEN to ONE!
EVENING GAMES – The (2) NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS bounced back from their morning loss and won a 1-0 pitcher’s duel to eliminate the (6) HASTINGS COLLEGE BRONCOS. A 4th Inning run was the game’s only offensive production. ### Meanwhile the (4) MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS sent the incredibly disappointing top seeds – the DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS – home with their 8-7 win in an Instant Classic. ### The (3) MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS won a 7-4 thriller over the (7) MOUNT MARTY COLLEGE LANCERS. ### And the (5) DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS also went 2-0 for the day with an 8-3 triumph over the (8) BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS. COLLEGE BASEBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RESULTS FROM APRIL 30th
* SOUTHERN STATES ATHLETIC CONFERENCE *
UPSET OF THE DAY – The SSAC’s 8th seeded AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY WARHAWKS (formerly the Senators) delivered the shock of the day yesterday. The Warhawks rose up and dragged down the conference’s top seeded FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES in an undeniable Instant Classic. The Eagles were leading 2-0 going into the top of the 8th Inning when the Warhawk bats came to life, seizing a 4-2 lead. Faulkner, the defending national champions of NAIA college baseball, pulled to 4-3 in their half of the Inning and AUM responded by adding another run in the top of the 9th. The Warhawks limited the Eagles to just 1 run themselves in the bottom of the Inning and nabbed a 5-4 victory! AUM’s P.J. Leto got the win!
THEY HAD ‘EM ALL THE WAY! – With apologies to the late baseball broadcaster Bob Prince. The 2nd seeded BREWTON- PARKER COLLEGE BARONS well and truly had their First Round opponents – the 7th seeded UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE RAMS – all the way. A 2-0 lead after the 1st Inning became 3-0 after the 2nd, 4-0 after the 5th and 6-0 after the 6th! The Rams finally got on the board in the top of the 8th Inning with a pair of runs but the Barons added another run of their own to make it 7-2, which would hold up as the final score! For the Barons Mike Venturelli walked away with the win. Continue reading

KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK (1978) ON THE TEXAS 27 FILM VAULT
In the middle 1980′s/ Way down on Level 31 –

Randy Clower and Richard Malmos of The Texas 27 Film Vault (both lower right) featured in a Movie Host article with Stella from Saturday Night Dead and Elvira.
Before MST3K there was … The Texas 27 Film Vault!
Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of this neglected cult show from the mid-1980′s.
EPISODE ORIGINALLY BROADCAST: Saturday May ??, 1987 from 10:30pm to 1:00 am. Exact date is still being debated. Any Vaulties with further information please feel free to contact me.
EXTRAS: Every single nanosecond of this film is riff-worthy, so with the usual comedy sketches from the Film Vault Corps (“the few, the proud, the sarcastic”) added on plus commercials there was no time for an episode of a Republic or Columbia serial before the movie this time. Randy and Richard, our machine-gun toting Film Vault Technicians First Class were able to get to the movie quickly. Continue reading

COLLEGE BASEBALL POSTSEASON ACTION CONTINUES
SO-CAL DIVISION: PLAY-IN ROUND – GAME ONE – The game of the day yesterday was this classic of the diamond played between the 17th seeded EL CAMINO COLLEGE WARRIORS and the 16th seeded MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES. After two scoreless Innings the Warriors put up a run in the top of the 3rd with the Mounties eventually tying things up in the bottom of the 6th. El Camino College responded with another run of their own in the top of the 7th Inning and rode that ball to a 2-1 victory. Credit Andrew Burschinger with the win.
SO-CAL DIVISION: PLAY-IN ROUND – GAME TWO – This game pitted the 15th seeded EAST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE HUSKIES against the 18 seeds – the COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS COUGARS. The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd Inning but by the bottom of the 3rd the Huskies had tied the game up. In the 5th and 7th Innings College of the Canyons logged a pair of runs to make it a 4-2 Cougar advantage. In the bottom of the 7th East Los Angeles College again knotted up the game. After the Cougars went on top again 5-4 in the top of the 8th the Huskies used their half of the Inning to take their first lead of the game at 6-5, which turned out to be the final score, too. East L.A.’s closer Shawn Kennedy got the win. Continue reading

BLACK OAK ARKANSAS: THE OFFICIAL BAND OF FRONTIERADO
The Frontierado holiday is just a little over 3 months away so here is the first related post for the calendar year. As the Lifetime Commissioner of Frontierado I am empowered to designate an Official Band for that greatest of all holidays! In keeping with my blog’s theme of emphasizing those things which are neglected I’ve named Black Oak Arkansas as the Offical Band of Frontierado. Headed by legendary front man Jim Dandy, whom David Lee Roth always pointed to as a huge influence, this country-rock/ r&b band thoroughly kicked ass. Click here for a quick (3 minute) representation of the group’s sound:
