PULP HERO NORTHWEST SMITH: STORIES THREE AND FOUR
Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of another neglected pulp hero – in this case Northwest Smith. Created by the female author C.L. Moore in the 1930’s Northwest Smith was a ruthless outer-space smuggler and mercenary decades before Han Solo. With his Venusian partner Yarol at his side and armed with a trusty blaster Smith roamed the solar system in his deceptively fast spaceship The Maid. In the course of their criminal pursuits the two often found themselves in the role of reluctant heroes, sometimes with the fate of entire planets at stake. 3. SCARLET DREAM (1934) – Once again lying low between illegal activities of some sort Northwest Smith finds himself in the Martian city of Lakkmanda. The city’s illicit markets are legendary throughout the solar system and Smith buys a very odd scarlet blanket made of some otherworldly silk-like material. The blanket was found on a deserted spaceship with no sign left of the original crew, which should have warned our hero away from the odd blanket but if it had there would be no story. Manny Perdomo got the win with an 8 Inning performance for PPU. Continue reading

GEORGE C SCOTT CAPTIONING FUN

I’ve had days like that. One time I unwittingly trained a dolphin to kill the president of the Teamsters Union. I had a hell of a time hiding Hoffa’s body. “Thanks for all the fish” my ass!
IF YOU PREFER YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CAPTIONS INSTEAD: Continue reading

COLLEGE BASEBALL: NAIA CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS ARE UNDERWAY!
The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference threw out the first pitch yesterday in postseason play for the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). The ever- dangerous INDIANA UNIVERSITY- SOUTHEAST GRENADIERS came in as the 3 seeds and opened up the proverbial can of whupass on the 6th seeded ALICE LLOYD COLLEGE EAGLES. The college sports gods always smile when a team with an overused name like Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs or Wildcats gets routed and the Grenadiers were happy to oblige!
IUS led 4-1 after the 1st Inning and 7-1 after the 2nd. The Grenadiers then went on to put up 4, 1 and 3 runs respectively in the 7th, 8th and 9th Innings on their way to an impressive FIFTEEN to ONE humilation of the Eagles. Mason Lingafelter got the win as IUS moves on to the next round. Continue reading
