The Sun Conference tipped off their post-season tournament yesterday, joining the hardcourt action in the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog. Here are recaps of the Opening Round games:
The 8th seeded WEBBER INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WARRIORS hosted the number 9 seeds – the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES in a game that went from being a tight classic to a comfortable win late. The Warriors overcame an early Gyrene lead to hold an 18-12 advantage with 10 minutes to play in the 1st Half. By the break Ave Maria had trimmed that to a 37-33 edge for Webber International. Late in the 2nd Half the Warriors led the Gyrenes 63-41 and coasted from there to a 71-59 victory. Brian Pace led WIU with 23 points. Continue reading

The NAIA’s February Frenzy of conference tournament games got underway last night and as always the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference started things off.

The HOLY CROSS COLLEGE SAINTS did battle with the visiting TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS and after a hard-fought opening 20 minutes, held a slim 35-32 lead at Halftime. In the 2nd Half the Saints fell behind by a score of 47-44 but runs of 9-0 and 7-0 allowed them to retake the lead and get separation for their 78-65 win. Drew Moore, Karl Columbus and Darrell McIntyre had 27, 18 and 15 points respectively for Holy Cross. Continue reading

Covering the myths and deities of the various peoples of Madagascar is a pretty sizeable job to undertake. I decided to use the same approach I’m using with the Americas and take things on a tribe-by-tribe basis.
First off I’ll be tackling the Merina people. Let me emphasize that for my fellow mythology geeks – this list will be JUST about Merina gods and myths. There are a variety of cultural groups from Madagascar, each with their own pantheon of deities, but plenty of mythological reference books do them the disservice of lumping everything into one big category labeled “Madagascar” or “Malagassy Mythology”.
This causes confusion because it would be like lumping gods from Celtic, Norse, Greco-Roman, Slavic, Etruscan and Hittite mythology in one big puddle called “European Gods” with no attempt to break them into their separate pantheons. So if the following gods either are not in whatever reference books you personally use or if your books list a different figure as “Madagascar’s” patron deity of a certain concept there is no need to jump in with objections. I will eventually hit all the cultural groups.
ITRIMOBE – The primordial sea-beast who lived on the Earth when it was nothing but endless ocean. For untold years Itrimobe enjoyed its solitary subaquatic existence. Eventually it grew bored and set out to examine the parameters of the world it lived in. It swam down all the way to the bottom of the sea, then swam upward as far as it could go and at last poked its head out into the air and sunlight.
Itrimobe swam east, north, west and south but found no land and no way out of the endless ocean. Curious, the entity dug three holes in the center of the Earth and one hole at each end, allowing much of the water to drain. This drainage caused the formation of the continents, which the now-amphibious Itrimobe explored. Unfortunately the blazing sun overhead eventually dried Itrimobe out to a dangerous degree and blinded it. The remaining ocean water was nowhere near deep enough for the gigantic creature to submerge itself ever again, causing its body to die. Continue reading

Another year and another drop for the United States on Reporters Without Borders’ rankings of press freedom around the world. We USED TO take pride in our freedoms, especially our formerly vigorous free press. Unfortunately the Obama administration’s persecution of reporters who dare to depart from the official White House line has gutted press freedom. When even the Democratic Party’s own New York Times describes Obama as “the greatest threat to press freedom in a generation” you know the situation is bad. Continue reading

BIBLE COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP – The NIT Bible College National Championship Game for 2015 pitted the DAVIS COLLEGE FALCONS against the TRINITY COLLEGE OF FLORIDA TIGERS. Falcons Coach Daniel Rathmell led his team to a 99-82 win and their THIRD Bible College National Championship. Davis College took the 2011 and 2013 titles as well.
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWELVE – The FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE DIPLOMATS welcomed the number 11 team in the nation – the DICKINSON COLLEGE RED DEVILS – and upset them by the authoritative score of 69-53. Franklin & Marshall College played smothering defense and led Dickinson 33-23 by Halftime, then never looked back. Morgan Lee led the Diplomats with 20 points. Both teams now have a record of 20-5.
OTHER UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON ROYALS had the Long Center rocking as they toppled the 14th ranked CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY CARDINALS in an 83-71 beating. Brendan Boken’s Double-Double led the Royals with 22 points and 10 rebounds. ### Meanwhile the STEVENS TECH DUCKS upset the (16) ST JOHN FISHER CARDINALS in a 60-54 defensive epic ### And the ILLINOIS WESLEYAN TITANS smacked down the (21) ELMHURST COLLEGE BLUEJAYS to the tune of 96-66. THIS IS IT! G-8’s FINAL BATTLE WITH STEEL MASK!
Balladeer’s Blog concludes its look at the neglected Pulp Hero G-8. This has been a story-by- story look at the adventures of this World War One American fighter pilot who – along with his two wingmen the Battle Aces – took on various super-natural and super- scientific menaces thrown at the Allied Powers by the Central Powers of Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Muslim Turks.
G-8 was created by Robert J Hogan in 1933 when World War One was still being called simply the World War or the Great War. Over the next eleven years Hogan wrote 110 stories featuring the adventures of G-8, the street-smart pug Nippy Weston and the brawny giant Bull Martin, his two Battle Aces. Here are my reviews of the 109th and 110th issues of this massively underappreciated Pulp magazine.
109. WINGS OF THE DEATH MONSTER (April 1944) – G-8’s FINAL BATTLE WITH STEEL MASK, the German supervillain who hid his disfigured face behind a metal mask decades before Dr Doom and Darth Vader came along.
Just like our hero’s final encounter with his arch-enemy Doktor Krueger a few issues back this already exciting story gets an extra boost from pure nostalgia, marking as it does the last meeting between G-8 and his second-most memorable foe.
Steel Mask still boasts a talent for weapons design that would shame even the 1960’s-era Tony Stark in Iron Man comic books. The German madman’s Death Monster is a new and improved version of the 100 feet high super-tank that he used a while back. For this new model wings and the element of flight threaten to make it the ultimate super-weapon for the Central Powers. Continue reading

PAT PATRIOT – Last time around I examined the forgotten Golden Age superheroine Fantomah. Since Liberals and Conservatives have to inject their bickering into everything my look at Fantomah prompted Conservatives to accuse me of secretly being a Liberal because, after all, only ONE of Fantomah’s villains was non-white. For my look at Pat Patriot I’m sure Liberals will stage an “AHA” moment and accuse me of being a Conservative because of the heroine’s all-American, red white and blue nature.
Introduced in Daredevil Comics in August of 1941 Pat Patriot – “America’s Joan of Arc” – was, in reality, Pat Patrios, a Greek-American woman who by day worked on an assembly-line. By night she pursued her dream of show-biz stardom by appearing in a minor stage musical, costumed like a female Uncle Sam for a patriotic song and dance. One night Pat was walking home after the show with her boyfriend Mike Brown (no relation to the thuggish robber of convenience stores).
The pair stumbled across a plot by “European” conspirators (America had not entered the global war yet so even though the villains were clearly supposed to be German they weren’t openly identified as such) to steal airplane motors and smuggle them to the Axis Powers. Still clad in her stage outfit Pat used her fists and some brutal high kicks to thwart the evil plan. The press mistook her name for “Pat Patriot”, but our heroine happily embraced that as her nom de guerre. Continue reading

If this weak, inept and crooked little man spent half as much energy fighting this war as he does trying to defend Islam the civilized world would be in much better shape.
Balladeer’s Blog, as always, is the only place on the web where Liberals and Conservatives get equal criticism. The Muslim World’s never-ending war with the civilized world is in the news more and more. Unlike the cowardly hypocrites of American Liberalism I have always outspokenly criticized Islam’s homophobia, misogyny and general intolerance.
If things keep going the way they have been, with the Islamic State now threatening to attack Italy and with Muslims perpetrating atrocities around the globe with undisguised glee let me once again point out the following:
Eventually, maybe decades from now, when it is realized through hindsight that everyone should have been speaking out about Islam’s abuses in the here and now American Liberals will try to rewrite history (again) to pretend that THEY were the ones speaking out about Islam. This is just like they pretend they would have had the courage to speak out about blacklisting during the 1950’s, and all the other historical revisionism they love to do to pretend they were always “on the right side of history.”
Those of us alive right now, however, are fully aware that in reality American Liberals have been the worst enablers of Muslim violence, misogyny and homophobia. Liberals obediently crawl for Islam and reflexively side with that savagely superstitious faith because the 9-11 attacks terrified them into submission.
So this is just a shoutout to the Liberals of 2045 or so, when they will be teaching their captive audience of students that Liberals in the early 21st Century “courageously” risked violent attacks from Muslims and risked being called Islamophobes or racists because hey, that’s the brave way Liberals behave. They speak out about oppression, like Islam’s oppression of women and gay people and non-Muslims. Well, at least they do AFTER IT BECOMES SAFE TO DO SO. Right now, when Liberals have a chance to ACTUALLY BE courageously outspoken, we can see that they would rather pander to the worst elements of Islam. Continue reading
