The 2019 College Basketball postseason is underway in the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog! As usual the NAIA’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tipped things off with Round One of their Conference Tournament last night.
TOP SEED FALLS – The 8th seeded UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS took on the CCAC’s top seeded OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS. The Fighting Saints showed they were in it for the win, playing hard enough for a 34-33 edge at Halftime. The teams put up 47 points each in the explosive 2nd Half as USF emerged with an 81-80 Upset. Cole Micek led the victors with 24 points.
FOUR OVER FIVE – In the 4 spot the ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS (shoutout to a regular reader of Balladeer’s Blog who went there) welcomed the 5th seeded ROBERT MORRIS (IL) UNIVERSITY EAGLES. The Eagles put the Lakers on Upset Alert at the break with a 31-28 advantage but Roosevelt U came roaring back for a 79-70 victory. Kevin Day’s 23 points led the Lakers and his teammate Grant Gibson notched a Double Double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Continue reading
CHICAGOLAND COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
FIRST QUARTERFINAL – The 6th seeded SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS visited the 3 seeds – the TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS.
The Cougars were chasing the Trojans by a score of 43-39 after an action-packed opening Half, but outscored Trinity International University 59-44 after the break. Saint Xavier advanced to the Semifinals with a 98-87 upset win led by Niko Cahue’s THIRTY points.
SECOND QUARTERFINAL – In the 2 spot the ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS welcomed the 7th seeded CARDINAL STRITCH UNIVERSITY WOLVES. The Lakers dominated the Wolves on both sides of the ball, keeping them under 30 points in each Half while getting a lot of separation Offensively.
At Halftime Roosevelt University held a 35-25 advantage and from there pulled further and further away from Cardinal Stritch U. Ultimately the Lakers won the game 74-54. Jake Ludwig tossed in 22 points to lead the way for the victors. Continue reading
And the 2017 postseason is underway in college basketball! Here are last night’s results from the four games in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
INSTANT CLASSIC – The tightest game of the night was played between the 3rd seeded CALUMET COLLEGE CRIMSON WAVE and the 6 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS. Despite a pitiful night from the Foul Line (Just 56.5 percent!) the Crimson Wave still managed to win this hardcourt epic 84-82. Damonte Lowery tossed in 21 points and had 6 rebounds for Calumet College, while his teammate Darrick Scott notched a Double Double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
CATFIGHT – This game pitted the 4 seeds – the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS – against the 5th seeded SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS. After an action-packed First Half the Tigers trailed the Cougars by a score of 51-46. Following the break Olivet Nazarene’s defense virtually shut down SXU while adding 45 more points of their own for a 91-77 triumph. SEMIFINALS – The top seeded CAL MARITIME ACADEMY KEELHAULERS defeated the 4 seeds – the LA SIERRA UNIVERSITY GOLDEN EAGLES – by a score of 80-60. Zach Davis led the Keelhaulers with 17 points while teammate Kameron Hoyt notched a Double Double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. ### And in the other Semifinal the SIMPSON UNIVERSITY RED HAWKS – the 2 seeds – routed the 3rd seeded PACIFIC UNION COLLEGE PIONEERS to the tune of 95-78. Shaquille Jones had 27 points for the Red Hawks.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament for this year was virtually “all chalk, all the time”. Even the title game was a 1 seed versus 2 seed affair. The (1) UNION COLLEGE (KY) BULLDOGS kept things chalky by defeating the (2) MILLIGAN COLLEGE BUFFALOES. A 39-31 Union lead at the Half ultimately became an 84-63 victory when the buzzer sounded. Dominique Hagans led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 8 rebounds. * UNION COLLEGE GETS THE AAC’s AUTOMATIC BID TO THE NAIA TOURNAMENT. MILLIGAN GETS THE RUNNER-UP BID. * Continue reading

FIRST SEMIFINAL – The 3rd seeded CARDINAL STRITCH UNIVERSITY WOLVES tangled with the 2 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS FIGHTING SAINTS – in this Semifinal game. After a blow-for-blow opening Half the Wolves held a 36-33 advantage at the break. Early in the 2nd Half a 16-4 run by Cardinal Stritch set the pattern for the rest of the game with the Fighting Saints playing catch-up. In the end the Wolves won by a final score of 83-68. The HOLY CROSS COLLEGE SAINTS did battle with the visiting TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS and after a hard-fought opening 20 minutes, held a slim 35-32 lead at Halftime. In the 2nd Half the Saints fell behind by a score of 47-44 but runs of 9-0 and 7-0 allowed them to retake the lead and get separation for their 78-65 win. The NAIA’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference as always leads the way for the nation and tipped off its 2014 college basketball tournament last night. In addition the post-season is underway in the NJCAA as well.
The CALUMET COLLEGE CRIMSON WAVE traveled to take on the PURDUE UNIVERSITY- CALUMET PEREGRINES in a clash of cool-named teams. In the first five and a half minutes of the game the Crimson Wave took control and held the whip hand the rest of the way. Calumet College won this First Round matchup by a final score of 72-50, with the Crimson Wave’s Robert Jackson contributing 22 points to lead all scorers. Franqlin Gatson was right behind his teammate with 21 points and Noah Allen’s 11 points made him the only Peregrine to reach double digits. Calumet College shot 52% from the field and, amazingly, FIFTY-NINE PERCENT from 3-point range.
In the other First Round game in the CCAC last night the ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS battled the INDIANA UNIVERSITY- SOUTH BEND TITANS in an undeniable hardcourt epic. These two familiar foes played a very physical game that saw the score knotted up 10 times through most of regulation, and then in the final fraction of a second the 11th tie sent them into Overtime courtesy of a Free Throw from the Titans’ Chris Beam. The Lakers came out reenergized for the extra session and churned out a 7-1 run that put them in control. The final score was 73-68 with Joe Harks from Roosevelt University leading all scorers with 21 points and 15 more tossed in by Tyree York. For IU- South Bend the Beam Brothers – Chris and Brandon – scored 18 points each to lead their team.

CHICAGOLAND COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – Yesterday was Day Two of the CCAC conference tourney. The 6th seeded TRINITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE TROLLS stayed alive by stunning the 2nd seeded OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS, sending them home after a very memorable 5-2 game. ### In a 5 over 3 upset the ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS took down the ROBERT MORRIS (IL) EAGLES in a 4-3 Instant Classic. ### The top seeded JUDSON EAGLES stayed unbeaten in the tournament by eliminating the (4) PURDUE-NORTH CENTRAL PANTHERS by a tight score of 5-4.
SOONER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – The UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS came in at the 4 spot yesterday and won a 6-5 game for the ages against the 5th seeded ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS. ### Meanwhile the top seeded OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY STARS had their hands full with the 8th seeded MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EVANGELS before emerging with a 4-2 victory. ### The (2) LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS downed the (7) ST GREGORY’S CAVALIERS 3-1. ### And the 3 seeds, the OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON survived a 6-5 game with the Continue reading
CROSSROADS LEAGUE – The upset of the evening last night came when the 8th seeded HUNTINGTON COLLEGE FORESTERS stunned the 1 seeds, the INDIANA WESLEYAN WILDCATS, by a score of 81-69. The Foresters faithful will be talking about this game for years to come! ### In the 7 spot the MARIAN KNIGHTS, the reigning NAIA football champions, likewise shocked the prognosticators by taking down the 2nd seeded GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS 62-54. ### The (3) BETHEL (IN) PILOTS (as in riverboat pilots) performed as expected, defeating the (6) ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS in an 89-73 affair. ### … And in the typically tight 5 vs 4 matchup the (5) TAYLOR TROJANS beat the (4) SPRING ARBOR COUGARS in a 70-62 upset.
CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE – In the opening round of the CPC tournament the 4th seeded MENLO COLLEGE OAKS let a healthy lead slip through their fingers, allowing the 5 seeds, the SIMPSON RED HAWKS, to force overtime.
