TOP FORGOTTEN U.S. NAVAL BATTLES OF WORLD WAR ONE

Navy in World War OneYes, Memorial Day Weekend is here so Balladeer’s Blog will once again feature a few seasonal posts. In keeping with my blog’s theme I will take a look at more military actions that don’t get the attention that others do. The members of the armed forces who died in those battles deserve to be remembered as fondly as those who perished in more renowned clashes. The army gets more attention than the navy and World War Two gets more attention than World War One so I’m shedding light on two neglected areas at once with this look at U.S. Navy battles of the First World War.

OCTOBER 15th, 1917 – America entered the war just six months earlier and the Navy had been transporting the American Expeditionary Force under General “Black Jack” Pershing to Europe, with additional Navy craft escorting those transport ships and fighting German U-Boats. On this date the USS Cassin encountered U-Boat 61 and, after an hour’s pursuit the German submarine turned to fight the Cassin. After a lengthy exchange of torpedoes and depth charges the Cassin was battered but still afloat, while the U-61 suffered substantial damage also, including the destruction of its conning tower, forcing the sub to break off the action and flee.

NOVEMBER 17th, 1917 – The USS Fanning and USS Nicholson clashed with the German U-Boat designated U-58 when eagle-eyed sailors spotted the German sub’s periscope above the water line. Depth charges from the two U.S. ships damaged the U-58 and forced it to surface and engage in standard ship-to-ship combat. The Fanning and Nicholson sank the U-Boat, becoming the FIRST United States ships to Continue reading →

MALDOROR 3:4 – THE SUPREME DRUNKARD

Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the macabre 1868 French language work The Songs of Maldoror. This time around our supernatural protagonist commits his greatest affront to God so far.

THE SUPREME DRUNKARD

The coveted Portuguese translation of The Songs of Maldoror.

The coveted Portuguese translation of The Songs of Maldoror.

This is the 4th stanza of the 3rd canto. On a beautiful spring morning Maldoror comes upon God lying in a drunken heap on the side of a road in France, sleeping off his binge of the night before. Periodically he makes to stand up but always collapses back down into slumber.

A passing hedgehog prods the hungover deity with his spines but that fails to rouse him. A woodpecker and a screech owl try to wake him up by pecking him and clawing at him to no avail. A mule kicks the Creator in the temple and a toad spits in God’s face but not even these assaults and insults excite a response from him.   Continue reading →

MEDAL OF HONOR WINNERS: A SELECTION

Medal of HonorHAPPY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FROM BALLADEER’S BLOG! It’s a time for remembering the people who go out and actually DO something and acknowledge their service along with the physical risks and the political abuse heaped upon them. In keeping with my blog’s theme of addressing items that slip through the cultural cracks I’m showcasing a few of the Congressional Medal of Honor winners from the neglected war the U.S. fought in the Philippines from 1899 to 1902.

Hiram BearssHIRAM BEARSS (Correct spelling) – This Captain won the Medal for his actions on November 17th, 1901 during a battle at the confluence of the Sohotan and Cadacan Rivers in Samar. Bearss led his men in a surprise attack on the enemy positions in the fortified cliffs. Relying mostly on bamboo ladders the Captain and his troops drove their opposition from their entrenched positions, literally “charging uphill” against enemy fire.

They also had to contend with the countless booby-traps lining the hills, many of which had been in place since the Spanish- American War of 1898. Those deadly traps took the form of pits, poison- tipped spears, trip-sprung vine nets loaded down with literally tons of stones and many others. The opposition in the caves honeycombing the cliffs needed rooting out as well with various forms of death lurking around every twist and turn in the caverns. Continue reading →

BELATED HAPPY “EVERYBODY DRAW MUHAMMAD DAY”

Muhammad, the insane child rapist who founded Islam.

Muhammad, the insane child rapist who founded Islam.

Yesterday I was so busy with the college baseball postseason and everything else that I forgot to mention it was once again International Draw Muhammad Day! The woman who founded it – Molly Norris – has been in hiding for years because of the Muslim fanatics trying to kill her. But hey, cowardly comedians continue to act like they’re “cutting edge” for going after Christians. I’m a non-believer but there’s no denying that if I wrote something about Jesus having sex with farm animals and corpses that would NO LONGER be daring. Christians have become the cultural “safe targets” so only the most gutless of hypocrites still think they’re being courageous by taking them on.

The truly untamed beast in the world’s religions is the superstitious savagery called Islam. Muslim fanatics kill people simply for drawing pictures they don’t like. In the past there were plenty of depictions of Muhammad in Western art because non-Muslims sure as hell shouldn’t be bound by the rules of a religion they don’t belong to. Only recently has there been an obsession with making it taboo to draw the insane, blood-soaked child rapist who founded Islam. I can’t draw so I’m limited to showing the drawings of others.

Those of us taking on Islam are fully aware that if the Muslim fanatics who threaten us DO succeed in killing us the world is full of cowards who will claim our deaths are our own fault. We don’t care. I don’t follow ANY religion and I will not live according to the rules of the most homophobic, misogynistic and otherwise intolerant religion in the world right now.

If you disagree with the spirit of this cartoon you're clearly too weak-minded to handle freedom of expression.

If you disagree with the spirit of this cartoon you’re clearly too weak-minded to handle freedom of expression.

WE ARE NEVER GOING TO STOP WITH THE PICTURES OF MUHAMMAD. Well, at least people with a backbone won’t. The weak and the cowardly will happily pretend they’re being “culturally sensitive” by shying away from Muhammad pictures. Then they’ll make a few Jesus jokes to pretend they ARE NOT afraid of religious fanatics.

This man put it best:

“Once they started killing people for drawing Mohammed it became necessary for everyone to draw Mohammed – to show that there are too many to kill, and thus to teach Islam that, whatever its own proscriptions, they do not and will never apply to non-believers. Once you make drawing Mohammed a capital crime, it is necessary to make drawing Mohammed so universal that it’s no crime at all. If you claim the right to kill because you’re offended, then it is necessary to offend you all the time – until you accept the messy norms of pluralistic societies.”   Continue reading →

TOP FOUR FORGOTTEN CONFLICTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY

With the Memorial Day holiday weekend coming up what could be more appropriate than to examine a few of the forgotten conflicts from America’s past? The soldiers who fell in those wars are no less dead just because they served in actions that are neglected in the history books and/or were never formally declared by Congress. (details, details)

And in keeping with my blog’s overall theme I won’t be bringing any of that weak Korean War, World War One or War of 1812 crap. When Balladeer says forgotten I mean forgotten with a capital (or at least italicized) “F”. As forgotten as The Montefuscos and Hizzoner. As forgotten as a Polish memoir or a promise from a presidential candidate.

4. THE FORGOTTEN YEAR OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR (1781 – 1782) – My fellow Revolutionary War geeks and I are forever rolling our eyes at documentaries that act like Cornwallis’ surrender at Yorktown marked the end of that conflict. True, it was the last MAJOR battle of the war, but there were 13 more months of open bloodshed and another year after that before the peace treaty was signed.

October 1781 to November 1782 saw General “Mad” Anthony Wayne’s campaign to fully recover Georgia from British Loyalists and Continue reading →

OBAMA SLAPPED IN COURT ONCE AGAIN

Obama at his most presidential

Obama at his most presidential

The weak, inept and crooked little man named Barack Obama got slapped down in Federal Court AGAIN over his administration’s habitual unconstitutional behavior.

Remember back in September of 2012 when Obama lied about the Al Qaeda attack on Benghazi in Libya? Long after B.O. claimed Al Qaeda was “on the run”? Little Barry was apparently terrified that that would be his “LBJ and the Tet Offensive” moment, prompting voters to see through another of his outright lies.

Obama’s solution? Lie about the pre-planned attack, which we now know his administration had warnings about AT LEAST TEN DAYS BEFORE IT HAPPENED. The repulsive little man claimed that the attack on the compound in Benghazi was “a spontaneous demonstration” caused by a Youtube video critical of Islam’s oppressive nature, especially toward women.

That video was forced off Youtube by the Obama administration, even though they knew it had nothing to do with Benghazi. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has now ruled that that was a case of prior restraint and Little Barry was in the wrong for forcing the Youtube video from the site. Obama and Hillary Clinton STILL lied to the faces of the loved ones of those who were killed by Al Qaeda at Benghazi, still pretending the video had caused the violence. AT THE FUNERAL FOR THEIR LOVED ONES!  Continue reading →

MALDOROR 3:3 – THE TIGER-HEADED DRAGON

Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the macabre 1868 French language work The Songs of Maldoror. It’s a battle of monsters this time around.

THE TIGER-HEADED DRAGON

As this stanza begins the supernatural being Maldoror has been conversing with the Wandering Jew from folklore. Way back in And Now Men Fear You No More we learned about Maldoror’s long-ago relationship with Lohengrin the Knight of the Swan when they both lived in the Grail Castle. Now our main character interacts with another figure from legend.

The narrative never bothers clarifying which of the many versions of the Wandering Jew story it favors, it’s simply presenting a chance meeting of two ancient beings who wander the Earth.

A white-winged, serpent-tailed dragon with the head and body of a tiger makes an aerial approach toward the two figures. The dragon lands and the Wandering Jew notes it is taller than the tallest oak. The dragon has come for Maldoror and the two exchange words of greeting as a prelude to their battle.  Continue reading →
