Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the macabre 1868 French language work The Songs of Maldoror. This time around our supernatural protagonist commits his greatest affront to God so far.
THE SUPREME DRUNKARD
This is the 4th stanza of the 3rd canto. On a beautiful spring morning Maldoror comes upon God lying in a drunken heap on the side of a road in France, sleeping off his binge of the night before. Periodically he makes to stand up but always collapses back down into slumber.
A passing hedgehog prods the hungover deity with his spines but that fails to rouse him. A woodpecker and a screech owl try to wake him up by pecking him and clawing at him to no avail. A mule kicks the Creator in the temple and a toad spits in God’s face but not even these assaults and insults excite a response from him.
Maldoror is moved to feel such contempt for his eternal enemy God that he straddles the deity’s face and defecates on it for three continuous days. (This is probably the least practical of Maldoror’s supernatural abilities that we’ve seen thus far.) Eventually God comes to, rises from the ground and sits down on a nearby rock to try to further recover.
The Creator presents such a pathetic sight that a passing beggar takes pity on him and tosses him the meager scrap of bread that was to be his own meal. God nods in thanks and munches on the bread. Speaking aloud the deity tries to justify his drunkenness as a result of the pressure of “holding constantly the reins of the universe.” He further rationalizes his binge by blaming it on the pressure of having recently formed an all-new planet somewhere and populating it with a new race.
Sufficiently composed now, God flies off back to Heaven. And hopefully a shower. +++
Next time around horror and madness are the result when Maldoror and God encounter each other in a haunted brothel.
