Nearly 200 American men served in the French Foreign Legion during World War One. Some were expatriates already living in Europe while others joined up to fight the Germans, Austro-Hungarians and Ottoman Muslim Turks. They had to join the French Foreign Legion because – though the war started in August of 1914 – the United States did not enter the conflict until April of 1917.
Most of the attention goes to flying squadrons like the legendary Lafayette Escadrille and the American pilots who served in Britain’s Royal Air Force during World War One. Balladeer’s Blog will instead feature Americans who don’t get the same degree of exposure.
FRED ZINN – Called “the Battler from Battle Creek” this man was visiting France in August of 1914 when the war broke out. He enlisted in the French Foreign Legion and by October was stationed at the Western Front. Zinn was wounded twice in action by February 1st, 1916, and ended that second convalescence period by transferring to the Aeronautique Militaire unit. Continue reading

Yes, it’s once again Guy Fawkes Day, the day Balladeer’s Blog celebrates figures who became symbols of the exact opposite things they represented in their actual lives!
Guy Fawkes was a religious fanatic whose face became a symbol of resistance against a fictional theocratic dicatorship thanks to a comic book. Che Guevara was a murderous, homophobic, racist would-be dictator depicted as a symbol of rebellion thanks to the spiteful cluelessness of Left-Wing Archie Bunkers.
Thanks to V For Vendetta, one of Alan Moore’s many overrated comic books, masks of Guy Fawkes have become associated with Moore’s fictional freedom fighter who opposed the aforementioned theocratic dictatorship in a dystopic future.
In reality Guy Fawkes was plotting to enable the institution of a theocratic dictatorship. And you can’t claim Moore was trying to be ironic by going with a mask of Guy Fawkes. In one of his interviews about V For Vendetta Moore mentions how he and the artist he was collaborating with decided they would give Guy Fawkes “the image he always deserved.” Continue reading

As far-fetched as it may seem, some of the most menacing monsters aren’t from the pages of books or the silver screen; they’re from real-world myths and legends. To create the infographic, we’ve scoured the darkest dungeons and most frightening fortresses across the globe.
Each monster has been awarded a danger rating, so you’ll know how safe it is to approach it. You’ll also discover their key traits and where they’re most likely to lurk. It’s short and sweet so you’ll be able to quickly identify them when they’re coming at you!
On the lower end of the scare scale is Frankenstein’s Monster. He’s generally a good guy, but his anger is unleashed when tormented by mad scientists. We (The Sleep Matters Club) think he deserves a danger rating of two.

Harry Truman in World War One
Veterans Day is one week from now so Balladeer’s Blog is presenting another look at World War One since November 11th marks the date that war ended.
HARRY S TRUMAN, CAPTAIN OF BATTERY D – This future Senator, future Vice President and future President is credited with one of my favorite quotes: “There’s nothing new in the world except the history you don’t know.”
That Show-Me State Seneca was in charge of Artillery Battery D, a hard-fighting unit that was often deployed well forward, in the heart of the action. During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918 Truman’s Battery D provided fire in support of the young George Patton’s tank brigade. “Captain Harry’s” boys engaged German field guns, eliminating and forcing the abandonment of enemy batteries at a noteworthy rate. Going into the 2016 campaign there were still some holdouts who were foolish enough or apathetic enough to pretend media bias wasn’t as bad as its reputation had become. That corporate media has frantically stripped away any doubt with their outright propaganda for Hillary “Bugsy” Clinton.
Hillary and her media shills have flaunted an attitude that says “This crude Trump person has filled the working class rabble with thoughts above their station in life. Our Hillary will crush the peasants.”

KAITAHITAHI – A very unusual deity who had a peculiar specialty. Kaitahitahi would cure constipation, which, joking aside, CAN be fatal if not treated properly. This god would be invoked to clean out the bowels of a person already afflicted with constipation (think of the Disemboweling Goddess from Inuit myths) and would be prayed to in order to prevent people from becoming constipated in the first place. We Democrats started ONE Civil War already and we’ll happily start ANOTHER if you don’t do what we say!
Well, to be fair it’s a nightmare for Democrats, period, since they’ve thrived on pitting black people against white people. They even had to manufacture the ridiculously artificial BLM just to elevate hostility. White citizens and black citizens have more in common with each other than we will EVER have in common with the bought and paid for criminals of the Political Class.
As I’ve said before, I can’t believe Americans have let Democrats – the party of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan and Jim Crow – get away with acting like they are in any way fit to lecture the rest of us about racism. Yes, I know the usual gibberish Democrats spout about this topic is “That was long ago. We’re better people now.” Nonsense. If the Party of Slavery can say that then the nation as a whole can say it, too.
The white and black working class are stronger together, united against one percenters like Hillary.
Meanwhile the Wikileaks revelations have shown what a cesspool of corruption the Clinton Foundation (Hillary’s fake charity) and Hillary’s campaign have been. Even I’m shocked by the extent of it and I’m the one who’s always saying that American politicians are the lowest life-forms on the planet.
As a bonus the newspaper called The Florida Commercial actually ISSUED AN APOLOGY for the way its own reporting has been so biased against Trump. They were supposedly shocked to see that all of America’s corporate media has been out to ensure Hillary “Bugsy” Clinton got elected. Anyone think the country will get an apology from the New York Times – Motto: “All the news that one percenter Carlos Slim thinks you should know about … And ONLY the news that one percenter Carlos Slim thinks you should know about.” Continue reading

Veterans Day is just over a week away so Balladeer’s Blog looks at some more World War One history.
SERGEANT ALVIN YORK – At age 29 (yes, twenty-nine) Alvin York of Tennessee was drafted into the United States Army in November of 1917. York trained with the 82nd Infantry Division at Camp Gordon, GA. In April, 1918 the unit arrived in Liverpool, England and by mid-May was at Sommes, where they began relieving various units in the trenches to acquire their first field experience.
June saw York and the 82nd move to Lagney, where they patrolled and raided enemy lines for several weeks. In September York and his comrades participated in the St Mihiel Offensive and in October they fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, during which York earned the Medal of Honor. Continue reading
