TOP FOUR FORGOTTEN MILITARY UNITS FROM AMERICAN WARS

As part of this upcoming Memorial Day celebration Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of neglected areas of United States military history.

Oneida Nation's First Allies Unit

Oneida Nation’s First Allies Unit

4. THE ONEIDA NATION’S FIRST ALLIES UNIT

Conflict: Revolutionary War

Comment: The Oneida Nation of Native Americans were America’s first allies. During the Revolutionary War most Native American tribes sided with the British but the Oneida Nation, under Chief Shenendoah (sic), led his people to ally themselves with the emerging United States. The Oneida alliance with the U.S. therefore PREDATED France’s recognition of an independent America.

The Oneida warriors fought alongside American forces throughout upstate New York, most notably at the Battles of Oriskany and Saratoga. They also provided desperately needed food and medical supplies for the Continental Army during the terrible winter at Valley Forge. Two treaties were signed and honored to this very day regarding Oneida sovereignty, retention of their land and a yearly ceremonial delivery of bolts of cloth to the Oneida leaders. That ceremony continues once a Continue reading

FORGOTTEN AMERICAN NAVAL BATTLES OF WORLD WAR ONE

Navy in World War OneYes, Memorial Day Weekend is coming up so Balladeer’s Blog will once again feature a few seasonal posts. In keeping with my blog’s theme I will take a look at more military actions that don’t get the attention that others do. The members of the armed forces who died in those battles deserve to be remembered as fondly as those who perished in more renowned clashes. The army gets more attention than the navy and World War Two gets more attention than World War One so I’m shedding light on two neglected areas at once with this look at U.S. Navy battles of the First World War.

OCTOBER 15th, 1917 – America entered the war just six months earlier and the Navy had been transporting the American Expeditionary Force under General “Black Jack” Pershing to Europe, with additional Navy craft escorting those transport ships and fighting German U-Boats. On this date the USS Cassin encountered U-Boat 61 and, after an hour’s pursuit the German submarine turned to fight the Cassin. After a lengthy exchange of torpedoes and depth charges the Cassin was battered but still afloat, while the U-61 suffered substantial damage also, including the destruction of its conning tower, forcing the sub to break off the action and flee.

NOVEMBER 17th, 1917 – The USS Fanning and USS Nicholson clashed with the German U-Boat designated U-58 when eagle-eyed sailors spotted the German sub’s periscope above the water line. Depth charges from the two U.S. ships damaged the U-58 and forced it to surface and engage in standard ship-to-ship combat. The Fanning and Nicholson sank the U-Boat, becoming the FIRST United States ships to Continue reading

CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DRAW MUHAMMAD DAY BY DRAWING A PICTURE OF THE BLOOD-SOAKED MADMAN

Draw Muhammad DayMay 20th is International Draw Muhammad Day, started by Molly Norris, who disappeared into hiding because of death threats from Muslims afterward! I have no real ability when it comes to drawing so I’ll run this item from Blogwrath as a sign of solidarity. Enjoy the day that asks the musical question: “What kind of superstitious savagery is it to kill people for drawing pictures?” Continue reading

ADD THE EXPANDING VETERANS ADMINISTRATION SCANDAL AND OBAMA’S RELEASE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS TO THE PILE OF SCANDALS

"Why would I care how many veterans die? Illegal immigrants are my only constituents!"

“Why would I care how many veterans die? Illegal immigrants are my only constituents!”

More and more whistle-blowers are coming forward regarding the crooked Obama administration’s V.A. scandal. That scandal and the recent revelation that Obama unilaterally (and illegally) ordered the release of over 30,000 illegal immigrants jailed for other crimes are just the latest in the long list of Obama scandals.

In a repulsively cynical way this piece of sewage from the cesspool of Chicago politics has counted on the fact that people would be a little leery of treating our first African American president the same rough way any other president would be treated for criminal behavior. I have no doubt that in the future the United States WILL have African American presidents who are all the wonderful things that the weak, inept and crooked little man named Barack Obama is NOT. THE LATEST COLLEGE BASEBALL RESULTS

* NJCAA *

Herkimer College GeneralsDISTRICT 3-A – CHAMPIONSHIP – Yesterday saw the final three games to decide this District’s title. First the HERKIMER COLLEGE GENERALS lambasted the ERIE COLLEGE KATS in an 11-3 manhandling.   ###   Then the ONONDAGA COLLEGE LASERS utterly annihilated what little remained of Erie College’s self esteem. The Lasers eviscerated the Kats THIRTEEN to NOTHING.   ###   And finally in the title clash itself the Herkimer College Generals masterfully tripled the offensive output of the Onondaga Lasers, defeating them by a score of 9-3. * THE GENERALS ADVANCE TO THE NJCAA3 WORLD SERIES! *

Tyler ApachesDISTRICT 3-C – CHAMPIONSHIP – Over the course of this District’s tourney each of the other title contenders had fallen by the wayside. The North Lake College Blazers, the Coastal Bend College Cougars and the North Arkansas College Pioneers all ended their postseason runs one day short of the championship game. The TYLER COLLEGE APACHES and the EASTFIELD COLLEGE HARVESTERS were the two teams left standing. Though both schools have storied baseball teams the Apaches completely dominated yesterday, routing the Harvesters ELEVEN to ONE! * THE APACHES ADVANCE TO THE NJCAA3 WORLD SERIES! Continue reading

HITTITE MYTHOLOGY: THE MOUNTAIN GOD AND THE DEER

Hittite empireHere at Balladeer’s Blog I’m nothing if not responsive to readers! The mania over the Hittite myths I’ve been examining lately shows no signs of abating so here is another look – this time at a didactic tale involving the mountain god.

Zaliyanu, the god of the mountain which bears his name, was kind enough to shelter a deer that was fleeing hunters. The pursuit had begun on a neighboring mountain whose god didn’t dare risk the wrath of the hunting god Kurunta by sheltering the terrified creature. Zaliyanu, the greatest of the mountain deities, had no such compunction. Continue reading

NCCAA WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CROWNED; NJCAA PLAYOFFS CONTINUE

* NCCAA WORLD SERIES *

fresno pacific sunbirdsDAY FOUR – Yesterday was the final day of the 2014 College World Series in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association). Three games brought the action to a close, the two semifinals and then the championship game. The first semifinal saw the 4 seeds – the FRESNO PACIFIC UNIVERSITY SUNBIRDS take on the 7th seeded CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS. The Sunbirds, playing their best baseball at just the right time of year, authoritatively downed the Yellow Jackets  6-1.

The second  semifinal was played between the 3rd seeded LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES and the Cinderella 9 seeds – the SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS. This explosive game saw the Flames emerge victorious by a final score of 11-8 to to set up the Fresno Pacific versus Lee University clash for the crown.

In the championship game last evening the bats were as red-hot as they were in the second semifinal that afternoon. By an odd coincidence the final score was once again 11-8 but this time the winners were the Sunbirds! * CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SUNBIRDS, THE NCCAA BASEBALL CHAMPIONS FOR 2014!*     Continue reading
