CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The CAL MARITIME ACADEMY KEELHAULERS lived up to their top seeding in the California Pacific Conference Tournament. The 2 seeds – the SIMPSON UNIVERSITY RED HAWKS – put up a terrific fight in this title game. At Halftime the Keelhaulers were clinging to a 35-34 edge and the 2nd Half was just as much of a back and forth affair as Regulation ended in a 71-71 tie. In Overtime Cal Maritime at last flexed its muscles and emerged with an 85-76 win! * THE KEELHAULERS ADVANCE TO THE NAIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT ON MARCH 11th! * Continue reading

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament for this year was virtually “all chalk, all the time”. Even the title game was a 1 seed versus 2 seed affair. The (1) UNION COLLEGE (KY) BULLDOGS kept things chalky by defeating the (2) MILLIGAN COLLEGE BUFFALOES. A 39-31 Union lead at the Half ultimately became an 84-63 victory when the buzzer sounded. Dominique Hagans led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 8 rebounds. * UNION COLLEGE GETS THE AAC’s AUTOMATIC BID TO THE NAIA TOURNAMENT. MILLIGAN GETS THE RUNNER-UP BID. * Continue reading

CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE – In the opening round of the CPC tournament the 4th seeded MENLO COLLEGE OAKS let a healthy lead slip through their fingers, allowing the 5 seeds, the SIMPSON RED HAWKS, to force overtime. Balladeer’s Blog’s February Frenzy continues tonight! Not only do more conferences tip off their tournaments but regional tournaments for the NorCal and SoCal divisions in the CCCAA also start tonight.
The NAIA’s California Maritime Academy Keelhaulers (logo at left) are the 1 seed in the California Pacific Conference tournament which will begin at 10:30pm ET. The Keelhaulers (love that name) went 19-9 in the regular season and if they get upset the 4th- seeded Menlo Oaks are my darkhorse pick to take the CPC title.

Two number seven seeds over two seeds, a number six over a three and a five over a four in last night’s action! And honorable mention goes to the Viterbo V-Hawks, an eight seed who gave the one seed nearly all they could handle in a valiant 69-66 loss. What my readers always care about are cool-named teams, so here we go – still alive – SAU Fighting Bees, Cal Maritime Keelhaulers, Jamestown Jimmies, Bethany Swedes, SDMT Hardrockers. OUT – V-Hawks, Comets, Blue Hawks, Cobras, Threshers, Moundbuilders and Spires.
