REMINDER: OBAMA FIRED ALL BUSH-APPOINTED AMBASSADORS

Obama firing all bush ambassadorsWith America’s increasingly unhinged Democrats pretending it’s some sort of scandal that de facto Third Party President Donald Trump fired the insubordinate and partisan Marie “Tears of a Clown” Yovanovich as Ambassador to the Ukraine, here’s a reminder that ALL PRESIDENTS ARE FREE TO FIRE AMBASSADORS WHENEVER THEY WANT AND FOR ANY REASON. PRESIDENTS SET POLICY, NOT TENURED FUNCTIONARIES.

Barack Obama fired ALL of the Bush administration’s ambassadors, so once again we see the Democrats and their media outlets blowing a situation all out of proportion to try to demonize every move made by President Trump. (I despised both Obama AND Bush so I have no dog in that particular fight.) Continue reading

“THE RUSTIC” BY EPICHARMUS (ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY)

Greece and their western coloniesBalladeer’s Blog takes another look at an ancient Greek comedy. Most of my previous examinations of these verse plays dealt with Attic Old Comedy or on what little is known about Susarion, a revered pioneer of stage comedy.

Epicharmus lived from approximately the 530s B.C. to the 440s B.C. He was born in one of the Greek colonies in Sicily, with Megara-Hyblaea, Syracuse or the island of Cos being the three most widely accepted possibilities.

Epicharmus is often credited with adding plots to the comedies but this is sometimes disputed by those touting Susarion instead. Other innovations possibly pioneered by Epicharmus were stock characters like spongers and naïve rustics plus comedic back-and-forth duels of insults or of competing arguments.

The chorus, so important to Attic Old Comedy, was not yet present on stage in Epicharmus’ time, but musical accompaniment was.

Like so many other ancient Greek comedies, the plays of Epicharmus have survived only in very fragmentary form.

THE RUSTIC (No year known) – The Eudemian Ethics refers to the use of rustic figures early on in stage comedies. As we’ve seen in other ancient Greek comedies these rustics were used in two different ways –

masc chair and bottle1) As the butts of jokes for their supposed inability to appreciate the sophisticated pleasures of city life and/or for their supposed lack of intelligence.

Or 2) As naïve yet endowed with a common-sense form of wisdom that lets them outmaneuver ill-intentioned city folks who try taking advantage of them or humiliating them. (Think No Time For Sergeants or Beverly Hillbillies B.C.)

In The Rustic the title character is visiting a city and is receiving gymnastic/ athletic training from a menacing instructor called “Knuckles” (Kolaphos). The surviving fragments from this play are so few that even less of the potential plot can be gleaned than from many other ancient Greek comedies. Proceeding fragment by fragment:

“Knuckles moves like the wind.” The trainer is presumably a veritable dynamo, running swiftly, jogging in place, touching toes and other activities of a broadly-drawn athletic stereotype.

“You are making the city the country!” The Rustic is speculated to be failing – or refusing – to conform to citified ways of conducting himself and instead is refashioning metropolitan characteristics to match his rural interpretation of them. Think “SEE-ment pond” for swimming pool. Or maybe “You’re turning New York City into Mayberry!”

Alternately, Laurentianus claimed that turning the city into the country instead referred to lawlessness. Think of a maverick cowboy treating a big city like it’s the Wild West. Or of Crocodile Dundee when he’s in New York. Continue reading

THE GODDESS SINA: BELLONA AND RENNELL VERSION

Balladeer’s Blog presents a look at the version of the Polynesian goddess Sina as reflected in the beliefs of Bellona and Rennell Islands. FOR OVER TWENTY MORE BELLONA AND RENNELL DEITIES CLICK  HERE

bellona-and-rennellSINA – The Bel-Ren counterpart to the Sina of the Hawaiian Islands (Hina) and the Samoan Islands (also called Sina). Like those figures she was the sister of Maui (Hawaiian) or Ti’i Ti’i (Samoan). However, this Sina was neither a moon goddess like her Hawaiian version nor a love and beauty goddess like her Samoan self.

Instead she fell under the Bel-Ren category called the Kakai. As the Atua were the major deities and the Apai were the unworshipped and/or mischievous deities the Kakai were classed as either pure Culture Gods or as the deities worshipped by the Hiti. The Hiti were the previous inhabitants of the Bel-Ren Islands and were all exterminated by the arriving Eight Clans.

(The Hiti lived on in Bel-Ren myths as impish, supernatural beings like the Menehune in Hawaii. They – like the exterminated Hiti – had once been the original inhabitants of their island group.)

Sina was featured in the myth explaining how the various birds who visited the Bel-Ren Islands got their coloring. The creative and artistically inclined Sina interacted with the birds on a regular basis and her intimacy with them enabled her to paint and craft their feathers, wings, claws, beaks and eyes to give each species its unique look. KILLRAVEN SIXTEEN: FANTASIA IN PSYCHEDELIC SOUND

FOR PART ONE OF BALLADEER’S BLOG’S EXAMINATION OF THIS OLD, OLD MARVEL COMICS STORYLINE CLICK HERE  The revisions I would make are scattered throughout the synopsis below.

Killraven NashvilleAMAZING ADVENTURES Vol 2 #32 (September 1975)

Title: Fantasia in Psychedelic Sound

NOTE: One slightly comical aspect of vintage comic book publications was the way the story titles on the cover often did not match the actual interior title of the story itself. Today it puts one in mind of reruns of the old show Police Squad! because of the intentional way the on-screen title NEVER matched the title said by the announcer.

Anyway, in this particular case the internal title is incredibly stupid – Only The Computer Shows Me Any Respect. Therefore I’m going with what the letters page of the previous issue said the title was going to be: Fantasia in Psychedelic Sound. To me it’s a better title AND sounds more Don McGregor-ish.

Killraven on horseSynopsis: Writer Don McGregor and artist Craig Russell are back after Mantlo/ Trimpe’s disastrous fill-in issue last time. It is June, 44 years in the future. Killraven and his Freemen (M’Shulla, Old Skull, Hawk, Carmilla Frost and her creation Grok – Deathlok in my revisions) continue their guerilla campaign against Earth’s alien conquerors.

Their wandering has brought them to the war-ravaged ruins of Nashville, TN as they seek shelter for a few days. One of the buildings still standing is a pre-war Mural Phonics Theater. As opposed to the individual-unit Mural Phonics System still in use by Earth’s alien overlords, the old Mural Phonics Theaters offered a theater-sized virtual reality experience in which the entire audience lived and experienced the on-screen movie.     Continue reading

DEMOCRATS CONTINUE THEIR SHOW TRIAL OF PRESIDENT TRUMP

pelosi and schumer love illegal immigrantsHere at Balladeer’s Blog I’ve made it clear that I feel neither Donald Trump nor Bill Clinton deserved to be impeached, but at least Bill Clinton faced a fair, ACTUAL impeachment proceeding. The hopelessly corrupt Democrats are subjecting President Trump to a bizarre “Impeachment INQUIRY” which deprives him and the House Republicans of any rights they would have under a REAL impeachment procedure.

What the Democrats are launching today is the public version of the Beria-style Show Trial they’ve been running to replace their failed Russian Collusion farce. Here are some excerpts from a terrific piece about the fascist railroading that Democrats are running. Link is below:

From Roger Simon – like me a former Democrat driven away by what the party has become:

Adam Schiff faceThe crime they (the Democrats) are trying to show is, well… nothing that is real. As in Stalin’s time, what is about to go public Wednesday for everybody to watch is naught but a “show trial,” much like the trial of the British engineers and the yet more ominous Great Purge. Only it is an opéra bouffe version led by Adam Schiff (photo at right), a failed screenwriter with a proven inability to distinguish fact from fiction. Thank God there’s no Gulag where he can send people.”

Biden scandal“But let’s give a look at what he and his cronies claim they are trying to show—some kind of presidential corruption regarding Ukraine. Some so-called whistleblower with a name no one’s supposed to know but everybody does (Ciaramella) accused Trump of threatening Ukrainian President Zelensky umpteen times with withholding U.S. aid if Zelensky did not investigate the activities of his political opponent and the opponent’s son.”

Biden crooked“As it turned out, when the transcript of the actual phone call was produced, it was a good deal less than that. It’s likely the hyperpartisan whistleblower, who never heard the call in the first place, lied through his teeth for political reasons he thinks—in all his virtue-signaling narcissism—are justified.”

NOTE FROM BALLADEER: And besides, MANY presidential administrations have used the threat of withholding American aid as leverage when pursuing their goals. Obama did it to Israel. Democrats running for president are threatening to do that AGAIN to Israel if they get elected. Yes, with a complete lack of self-awareness their own candidates are promising to do what they claim is an impeachable offense when President Trump does it.

And remember, we know that Obama used THE UKRAINE to get info on Trump’s campaign manager in 2016.

Joe Biden smile“… Also not allowed is any word on the father-son corruption (Biden und Sohn) which is clearly monstrous, worth millions, even billions, and has a direct effect on our relationship with China (which old Joe, the law school plagiarist, assured us was fine and not to be concerned about).

But the actual “favor” (that was the word used) being asked for on the phone by Trump to Zelensky was about CrowdStrike, not about the Bidens, who were an afterthought … It’s the digital firm with roots in California and Ukraine that was hired by the Clinton-associated law firm Perkins Coie to investigate the break-in of the DNC server during election 2016. When CS reported it was the Russians, that was accepted at face value by the FBI. Why the FBI, with all their vaunted cyber facilities, did not do this themselves is open to question—and everybody in the Beltway cesspool knows it, all the despicable creeps wringing their hands over Trump. Omertà rules in Washington, especially among the Democrats and the media (of all places).”

Trump resisting the Deep State“They all know that the real investigation is in progress—what happened early in 2016 and thereafter that instigated the two-plus years of phony national hysteria known as the Russia probe, the probe that did everything it could, but thankfully failed, to upend the Trump administration. The characters who engineered this shouldn’t just be impeached—some have already lost their jobs—they should be sent to stir.”

This whole show trial would just be an amusing farce in the farcical land of D.C. politics were it not for one thing—it just could (not likely, but could) be successful. And if it is, that’s the end of our country as we know it. Half of our citizens will feel completely disenfranchised. Where it will go from there is anybody’s guess.” Continue reading

ALLEGRO NON TROPPO (1976): FILM REVIEW

Allegro Non TroppoALLEGRO NON TROPPO (1976) – Balladeer’s Blog takes a look at the infamous Italian parody of Disney’s Fantasia. In our current year, where the avaricious Disney corporation has engulfed and devoured countless film properties and tried to trademark so many figures from world folklore, writer and director Bruno Bozzetto’s satirical poke at The Mouse That Ate Entertainment deserves to be revisited.

Allegro Non Troppo was the only film until Shrek to take satirical aim at the Disney Empire. Bruno Bozzetto’s film combined black & white live action scenes with state of the art animation for the 1970s. Bozzetto introduces us to an Italian film producer, played by Maurizio Micheli, who thinks he’s come up with an original idea: an animated film with its episodes set to classical music.

Right up front the film takes a shot at Disney’s (even then) notoriously litigious nature by having the overly unctuous producer/ presenter receive a phone call warning legal action since this premise has been done before, in Fantasia. The producer, equal parts used car salesman and circus ringmaster, shrugs off the threats from “Prisney or whoever” and goes on with the show.

Allegro Non Troppo 2Micheli’s character keeps his animator (Maurizio Nichetti) in chains in a dungeon as another swipe at the House of Mouse. As if that’s not enough he also keeps his musicians in a cage, letting them loose only to do their work for him.

Once the browbeaten, put-upon animator begins drawing the illustrations spring to life as the color cartoons sprinkled throughout the movie. In between those cartoons are comedy sketches with the presenter, animator, orchestra and conductor (Nestor Garay). The comedy sketches range from acceptable to cringe-inducing and never approach the brilliance or bite of the opening salvos against Disney.

As for the cartoons and the works of classical music to which they are set: Continue reading

MONMOUTH POLL: TRUMP HAS HIGHER FAVORABILITY RATINGS THAN THE 2020 DEMOCRAT CANDIDATES

mascot new look donkey and elephant headsThe highly respected, non-partisan Monmouth Poll has shown that – despite the 24/7 attacks from the Democrats’ media outlets, de facto Third Party President Donald Trump has higher favorability ratings than the 2020 Democrat candidates for president. (And that’s the YEAR 2020, not the number of candidates the Democrats have running for president. Although …) The link is below.

President Trump is one point ahead of Quid Pro Joe Biden, two points ahead of Elizabeth “The Fake Cherokee” Warren, three points ahead of Bernie Sanders, and SEVENTEEN points ahead of Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigeig, the bizarre little man who invokes the Bible even more nauseatingly often than the religious right does.  Continue reading

THE PEOPLE OF THE MOON (1895): ANCIENT SCIENCE FICTION

People of the Moon biggerTHE PEOPLE OF THE MOON (1895) – Written by Tremlett Carter. An unnamed narrator, a scientist of some sort, sees a glowing 18 inch object floating in the sky. A bird who makes physical contact with the glowing orb is killed by the object’s electric charge.

Our narrator jury-rigs a means of grounding against the electricity and hauling the orb down to his laboratory. The object slowly reaches room temperature and ejects from its interior a book written in an unearthly alphabet.

The anonymous narrator’s friend Professor Hector Goss visits him in the midst of all this and excitedly tells our protagonist about a secret society that he belongs to. Goss and his fellow society members have been performing scientific research by directing the astral/ spiritual bodies of hypnotized human guinea pigs.

Before dying, their most recent test subject visited the moon in his astral body and saw a city on the dark side of Earth’s satellite. He also spotted life – humanoid AND dragon life. Professor Goss jumps to the conclusion that the unearthly book that Nameless Narrator holds came from the moon.

Conveniently, Nameless and Goss had previously devised a fool-proof system of deciphering any and all languages so they translate the mysterious book and learn all about the beings on the moon. Continue reading
