ROCKTOBER BLOOD (1984)

Rocktober BloodROCKTOBER BLOOD (1984) -This example of the Heavy Metal Horror films of the 1980s was produced, directed and written by Beverly and Ferd Sebastian, a well-known pair to all of us Bad Movie Geeks. The premise of this hilariously bad movie is that Heavy Metal star Billy Eye programs something sinister into his latest album by way of backward-masking. (Like “I buried Paul” and others)

After listening to those hidden messages to make sure they “took,” Billy Eye molests his just-dumped girlfriend Lynn Starling (Donna Scoggin) then uses a knife to injure her. He’s just getting started, though, and from there he proceeds to slaughter most of his band members, a security guard and nearly 20 other innocent people!

Billy is tried, convicted and executed for the killing spree. One year after his execution his former flame Lynn Starling has formed her own Heavy Metal group called Headmistress. The band is starting its first nationwide tour, called the Rocktober Blood Tour, unaware of the tedium horror about to envelope them. Continue reading →

DAY OF THE DOLPHIN CAPTIONING FUN

I've had days like that. One time I unwittingly trained a dolphin to kill the president of the Teamsters Union. I had a hell of a time hiding Hoffa's body. "Thanks for all the fish" my ass!

I’ve had days like that. One time I unwittingly trained a dolphin to kill the president of the Teamsters Union. I had a hell of a time hiding Hoffa’s body. “Thanks for all the fish” my ass!

IF YOU PREFER YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CAPTIONS INSTEAD:

A) Personally, I’ve always subscribed to the “Second Dolphin” theory myself. Continue reading →

PELE AND HI’IAKA: EPIC OF HAWAII PART NINE

island of mauiBalladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the grand and exciting Hawaiian epic about the goddesses Pele and Hi’iaka.

PART NINE

By nightfall Hi’iaka had secured passage for herself and the mortal woman Wahine in a craft bound for the island of Maui. That vessel set off the next morning. In some versions the boatman and his son refuse to take the ladies so Hi’iaka punishes them by using her powers to make their craft sink. After swimming to shore the two men were more than happy to take the ladies in their other ship. Continue reading →

COOL-NAMED TEAM: UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA PANDAS

UNIVERSITY  OF ALBERTA PANDAS

 Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Division: NAIA

Conference Affiliation: Canada West Universities Athletic Association

Comment: Many people don’t realize some Canadian schools play various college sports in America’s lower divisions. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like pandas unless they were traumatized by the long national nightmare we had trying to get the National Zoo’s panda bears to mate. Continue reading →

PELE AND HI’IAKA: EPIC OF HAWAII PART EIGHT

Honoli'i River 2

*** *** *** **** *** A bridge over what remains of the Honoli’i River

Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the grand and exciting Hawaiian epic about the goddesses Pele and Hi’iaka.

PART EIGHT

We’ll begin this 8th installment at the village of Kohala on the Big Island. Hi’iaka’s traveling companion, the fern goddess Pa’u’o’pala’e, fell in love with Paki’i, a mortal Kaholan man. She stayed behind to dawdle and canoodle with her new-found love while Hi’iaka and the human woman Wahine resumed their quest to reach Kaua’i.

Other versions of this epic instead state that Pa’u’o’pala’e stayed with the other two ladies until reaching the end of the Big Island. That was when she said goodbye and remained behind, supposedly because she was unable (for some undisclosed reason) to leave that island.

That being the case, the fern goddess either was or was not still with Hi’iaka and Wahine as they reached the Honoli’i River (barely a stream here in the present-day). The two ladies removed their clothing and, holding their outfits on their heads above the water they set out to swim to the other side.  Continue reading →

DEMOS-TYNDAREUS (410BC): ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY

classical greeceDEMOS-TYNDAREUS (410 BC) – Written by Polyzelus.

The Tyndareus part of this political comedy’s title refers to the mythical figure who came back from the dead like Lazarus in Christian beliefs. The Demos part is the embodiment of “the people” and comes from the same root word that “democracy” does. In this satire Demos represents the Athenian people just like he did in Aristophanes’ The Knights and in other comedies. Think of a figure like Uncle Sam representing Americans or John Bull representing the British or a person on their knees with their hands raised in surrender representing the French (rimshot).

The title is referring to the resurrected democracy of Athens following the fall of the government imposed by the oligarchic coup of 411 BC – 410 BC. This restoration would later be followed by ANOTHER oligarchic coup six years later and another restoration of democracy, but of course none of this was known when Demos- Tyndareus was first performed. The scattered fragments reveal that the comedy dealt with an unknown figure orienting the resurrected Demos to the political climate of the newly- restored democracy. Continue reading →
