PULP HEROES: SILVER JOHN – “FIND THE PLACE YOURSELF” AND “WALK LIKE A MOUNTAIN”

I’m continuing my look at Manly Wade Wellman’s pulp hero Silver John, the roaming singer and guitarist who fights supernatural forces in the Appalachian Mountains of long ago, sort of like a countrified Orpheus meets Kolchak. He’s called Silver John because of the silver strings on his guitar and the silver coins he carries in his pockets. For more details click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

FIND THE PLACE YOURSELF – This Silver John vignette features a creepy cabin that always puts me in mind of the cabin from the original Evil Dead. Otherworldly horrors inhabit the cabin and its surroundings, including flowers with Continue reading →

OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN EAGLES WIN THE NCCAA DIVISION ONE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

A team named Eagles won the National Christian College Athletic Association Division 2 World Series, and now Division 1’s champion is also a team called the Eagles – in this case the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles. OWU, apparently outraged by my recent post regarding the Continue reading →

FRONTIERADO SAGA – THE BLACKWATER KID

Following in Six-Gun Sara’s gutsy footsteps, here is the very first Frontierado Saga I wrote back in 2009. It was the one for myself to show people what I meant by customized sagas. I felt my own name wasn’t western enough so I made the Blackwater Kid’s real name be Nathanael Greene Larraby instead. Many of the figures the Kid interacts with are from the Bad Movie world so they may not be as recognizable as the figures Six-Gun Sara interacted with.

The Blackwater Kid

The Blackwater Kid was born Nathanael Greene Larraby (his parents named him after Revolutionary War hero General Nathanael Greene) in 1846 in Springfield, New Jersey. At seventeen he was admitted into Princeton but after causing a minor scandal with his Continue reading →

MOVIE HOSTS: STELLA FROM SATURDAY NIGHT DEAD (1984-1990)

This beautiful redhead is Stella, aka the Maneater from Manayunk (a section of  Philadelphia), as portrayed by the talented Karen Scioli. There are plenty of color photos of Stella out there but I think this b&w pic best captures her spirit. Karen Scioli wrote most of her material herself, in the style of Rich Koz, and was a stand-up comic before becoming a movie hostess.

People who like my bad movie reviews tend to like practicioners of the American folk-art of movie hosting and Karen Scioli was one of the best. And with all due respect to Elvira, as a lifelong breast man I believe Stella was the REAL “hostess with the mostest”. Continue reading →

SPECIAL GUEST COMMENTATOR JAKE THE PARROT TALKS TURKEY ABOUT TEAMS CALLED EAGLES

“Forget it, Jake, it’s  Chinatown.” … Had to be said. Now let’s move on. Since I’m getting geared up for NAIA College World Series coverage and with the Frontierado holiday coming up, plus the NCAA Divisions 2 and 3 having their baseball playoffs right now Jake the parrot, who is one of the star attractions of his mom’s blog volunteered to do some guest commentary. And be sure to buy Jake’s best-selling autobiography titled That Ain’t Dandruff: My Former Life As A Pirate’s Shoulder-Parrot. Anyway, in the bold tradition of Bogie, Tibbs, Oolong and Pekoe, Gaius, George the Whippet, Twiggy and Littlegirl, comes Jake.

JAKE: The first person to make with a “Jake want a cracker?” joke will be on my list. … I’m just sayin’.  I’m also known as JJ, as in Gittes, to throw in another Chinatown reference like the guy who normally writes for this blog did. I really admire the way

USCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS CROWNED, NCCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CONTINUES

The Briarcliffe Bulldogs “controlled their own destiny”, to use one of the most repulsively overused cliches in sports. They knew what they had to do and they went out and did it. Facing elimination themselves they forced a second game by defeating the Southern Virginia University Knights 11-9. In the deciding game, a thriller for the ages, the Continue reading →

MORE SON OF SVENGOOLIE

For more bits from Rich Koz, the Babe Ruth of the old-time movie hosts, let’s move to his (and his predecessor’s) running jokes about Berwyn, a Polish American community near Chicago. In the 1960’s Cleveland’s late night movie host Ghoulardi poked fun at the Polish suburb of Parma. In the early 1970’s the original Svengoolie used Chicago’s equivalent of Parma, Berwyn, as the butt of frequent jokes. The mere mention of the name would prompt the sound byte of a disbelieving voice quipping “BURRRRR-wiiin?” Son of Svengoolie continued the tradition.
