The Briarcliffe Bulldogs “controlled their own destiny”, to use one of the most repulsively overused cliches in sports. They knew what they had to do and they went out and did it. Facing elimination themselves they forced a second game by defeating the Southern Virginia University Knights 11-9. In the deciding game, a thriller for the ages, the Bulldogs beat the Knights again by a score of 6-2 to take the 2011 United States Collegiate Athletic Association World Series title! Congratulations to Briarcliffe (School Slogan: Briarcliffe: It’s spelled just like Briarcliff, but with an “e” at the end.) and to SVU for their stellar season. And let’s give a little love to the rest of this year’s USCAA World Series field – the Newport News Builders, the Spalding Golden Eagles, the Greater Allegheny Lions, the Rochester College Warriors, the Robert Morris (IL) Eagles, the Southern Maine Seawolves and the Central Maine Mustangs.
