For more bits from Rich Koz, the Babe Ruth of the old-time movie hosts, let’s move to his (and his predecessor’s) running jokes about Berwyn, a Polish American community near Chicago. In the 1960’s Cleveland’s late night movie host Ghoulardi poked fun at the Polish suburb of Parma. In the early 1970’s the original Svengoolie used Chicago’s equivalent of Parma, Berwyn, as the butt of frequent jokes. The mere mention of the name would prompt the sound byte of a disbelieving voice quipping “BURRRRR-wiiin?” Son of Svengoolie continued the tradition.
Here are two bits – One from Koz’s 1989 show The Koz Zone, with his Son of Svengoolie character making frequent guest bits. It’s Koz in a split screen with himself as Sven on one side and as Frank Sinatra on the other. They sing Bye Bye Berwyn to the tune of Bye Bye Blackbird. Then, from the original run of Koz’s 1979-1986 Son of Svengoolie show it’s Boogie Woogie Boogeyman of Berwyn sung to the tune of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B.

Good question. I haven’t encountered any yet, but people are still periodically uploading old Sven material on to Youtube so I may come across one any day now. Plus there was the discovery a year or so ago that a woman in Chicago had taped every episode of the first three or four years of Son Of Svengoolie on beta and then VHS, and people were going to be converting those, so when those start showing up who knows what lost Rich Koz material we’ll find.

Rich Koz is the greatest! It’s always hard to tell if other shows ripped him off or were just positively influenced by him.
I think it’s great to see Koz get all the attention he deserves these days, so that some people stop thinking only one show in history ever made fun of bad movies.
