COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCORES FOR AUGUST 27th

Yesterday continued the 2022 college football season which kicked off on Thursday.

florida memorial other wayFMU UPSETS DIVISION TWO – Every year multiple NAIA teams topple teams from higher divisions. Yesterday the FLORIDA MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY LIONS started 2022 by knocking off NCAA Division Two’s EDWARD WATERS UNIVERSITY TIGERS. The Lions led 26-0 at the Half, then held on against a furious Tigers rally for a 39-34 triumph.

tabor college other waySAFETY FIRST – This game pitted the TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS against their hosts the IOWA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be the Purple Tigers). The first points scored in this clash came on a 1st Quarter Safety, giving the Blue Jays a 2-0 edge which remained unchanged come Halftime. From there the Tigers led Tabor College 10-8 in the 3rd Quarter only to see the Blue Jays win out 17-13 in the 4th. 

bluefield college other wayUNDER THE RADAR CLASSIC – The BLUEFIELD COLLEGE RAMBLING RAMS paid a visit to the THOMAS MORE UNIVERSITY SAINTS. A 21-7 1st Quarter lead for the Saints became a 21-21 tie at the break. The Rambling Rams led 35-21 going into the 4th Quarter, then held on to win the game 42-35. Continue reading →

BATMAN: THE REAL YEAR ONE (1939-1940)

For this weekend’s light-hearted, escapist superhero post, Balladeer’s Blog will look at the first twelve months of Batman stories.

Title: The Case of the Chemical Syndicate

Villains: Alfred Stryker and his thugs

NOTE: This was the very first appearance of Batman.

Synopsis: Wealthy Bruce Wayne is relaxing with Commissioner Gordon at the latter’s home. Gordon discusses with Bruce the reported sightings of a figure called the Batman. Bruce pretends to be as puzzled as the commissioner is.

A phone call summons Gordon to the Lambert Mansion, where the son of the chemical company tycoon is being held on suspicion of murdering his father. The commissioner invites Bruce to tag along (?) and he does so.

batman posingThe Lambert son (no first name is ever given for him and his father) insists he’s innocent and that his father was receiving threats from a criminal syndicate muscling in on the family’s firm, Apex Chemical Corporation. The dead man’s partner Steve Crane starts getting threats now and wants police protection.

Bruce Wayne secretly decides to give Crane extra protection as Batman. That night, our hero clashes with multiple hired killers, tossing one of them off the roof of a building during their fight. Batman also has to evade the police, who want the vigilante arrested. Continue reading →

AND THE 2022 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON IS UNDERWAY!

Yesterday saw the kickoff in the 2022 college football season in two of the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog. The rest will join in next week. As for yesterday’s results:

Jamestown College JimmiesWORKING OVERTIME – The UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES welcomed the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS. The Jimmies led 7-0 in the 1st Quarter and 14-0 at Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended with the University of Jamestown on top 21-7, but the Vikings forced Overtime with a 21-21 tie to end Regulation. In the extra session, VCSU notched a Field Goal, following which the Jimmies scored a Touchdown to win the game 27-24.

evangel valor helmetVALOR AND PRIDE – In this game the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY VALOR took the field against the visiting CLARKE UNIVERSITY PRIDE. A 17-13 edge for the Valor at Halftime became a 24-20 advantage over the Pride headed into the 4th Quarter. Evangel University added another Touchdown for a 31-20 victory. Continue reading →

This will not be the last time, based on how Democrats run these scams. This will happen again and again. Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi previously stated (correctly) that no president has the authority to do what Biden just did regarding student loans.

But hey, Democrats already make taxpayers fund their media outlets like NPR and PBS. Democrats already make taxpayers fund the schools where Democrat OPINIONS have replaced rational thought. It’s the logical next step for Democrats to make taxpayers fund their children’s degrees in Democrat Studies programs. So much for the party that pretends to care about “fairness.”

Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe celebrated how much Biden’s move will help many of his ex-students. By the way, “No. 2 is Harvard Law School, where grads with little or no experience pull down a median salary of $143,000. At mid-career, Harvard law graduates earn $234,000, on average,” Forbes reports.” It sounds like they can afford to pay their own student loans.

            Try to imagine how this story would be handled if it was a non-Democrat at the core of the scandal. EVERY TIME the case was mentioned, Democrat news outlets would be mentioning Ashley’s allegations that her creepy father Joe Biden took those “inappropriate” showers with her when she was a child.

ONLY 32% TRUST THE MEDIA. And no wonder. 

ON A LIGHTER NOTE, HILLARY CLINTON LOST A COMPETITION OF LEGAL QUESTIONS AGAINST KIM KARDASHIAN … WITH HILLARY’S OWN DAUGHTER ASKING THE QUESTIONS! Kim beat her 11-4. Always remember that Hillary flunked the bar exam long ago.

365 DAYS AND ITS SEQUELS: WORSE THAN BOTH TWILIGHT AND 50 SHADES OF GREY

365 DAYS (2020) – My fellow fans of bad movies have long been leaving comments and sending emails encouraging me to review Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey. I’m glad I delayed, because now I can review this even worse book and film series.

You may be wondering why, if I could resist reviewing the tale of a hundred-year-old vampire and a shirt-challenged werewolf fighting over a hopelessly bland teen girl, why have I decided to go ahead and review 365 Days and its sequels? And you may be wondering why, if I could resist reviewing the tale of a deranged billionaire stalker and the hopelessly bland object of his fixation, why have I decided to go ahead and review 365 Days and its sequels?

I can answer with one word … pierogie!

As my last name indicates, I am of Polish-American descent and with the scene where the abducted woman in the 365 Days franchise demands that her gangster captor provide her with “Normal food … pierogie!” I knew I had found my muse! Even though I never got the hoped-for line “Leave the gun. Take the kielbasa.”  Continue reading →

TURLOGH DUBH: ANOTHER NEGLECTED ROBERT E. HOWARD CHARACTER

Recently, Balladeer’s Blog examined Robert E. Howard’s trilogy of tales featuring one of his neglected characters, James Allison. This time around we’ll take a look at another overlooked creation of Howard – the Irish warrior Turlogh Dubh of Clan O’Brien. 

grey god passesTHE GREY GOD PASSES – This was technically the first appearance of Turlogh Dubh but the story was not published until long after Robert E. Howard’s suicide in 1936. That publication came in 1962’s Dark Mind, Dark Heart. The other two Turlogh stories were published in 1931. 

Turlogh is just one of many characters – both real and fictional – in this historical adventure about the real-life Battle of Clontarf on April 23rd, 1014 – Good Friday. The battle supposedly lasted from sunrise to sunset.

Robert E. Howard’s approach in this tale could be likened to those big-budget, all-star war movies like The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, Midway, etc. Like the other characters, the fictional Turlogh comes in and out of the narrative as we read the lead-up, the battle and a bit of the aftermath. He is, however, the main character of the next two tales in which he appears.  Continue reading →

SHE-HULK: HER FIRST TWELVE STORIES FROM THE 1980s

This weekend’s light-hearted, escapist superhero blog post from Balladeer’s Blog will look at the first twelve adventures of the She-Hulk.

Title: The She-Hulk Lives

Villain: Gangster Nick Trask

Synopsis: Bruce Banner drifts into Los Angeles. Wearying of his life as a fugitive, he seeks out his cousin Jennifer Walters, an attorney. While Bruce is asking Jennifer for whatever legal help or advice she can give him, gangster Nick Trask has some of his goons shoot Jen because one of the clients she is defending is a man that Trask framed for murder. 

she hulk picJennifer is bleeding out and will die before any ambulance can arrive, so Bruce breaks into a nearby doctor’s office and uses some of the equipment inside to donate some of his own blood to Jen to save her life. An ambulance gets Jennifer and Bruce to a hospital and she stabilizes.

The authorities start to get suspicious of Bruce so he slips away before they realize who he is. Nick Trask has 3 more goons visit Jennifer’s hospital room to finish her off. Their attempt to murder her fuels enough of a metabolic change to trigger her first transformation into She-Hulk. Continue reading →
