LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES AND THE WORD “TERRORIST”

A REMINDER OF WHAT IS AT STAKE IN THE CLASH BETWEEN THE CIVILIZED WORLD WITH ALL ITS FLAWS AND THE SUPERSTITIOUS SAVAGERY OF ISLAM

Welcome back to Balladeer’s Blog, the only site on the web that equally criticizes Liberals and Conservatives. As I’ve often stated I feel hostility toward Conservatives but for Liberals I feel absolute contempt. The predictable Liberal reaction to the Muslim terrorist attacks in Canada last week provided more examples for me to cite.

“It’s been a tough week for Canadian Muslims.” – That was the actual line used by a Canadian Liberal who, typically for western Liberals, is a spineless, groveling enabler of Muslim violence. They used the line in Canada’s National Post to start a story dealing with the two separate attacks by Muslim terrorists last week. Do an online search if you’re skeptical.

Glenn Greenwald, another typical coward who crawls for Islam every chance he gets was chiding his own country for the outpouring of grief over the incidents. Like all western Liberals Greenwald apparently feels that if you’re killed by a Muslim you had it coming to you. Huffy little Glenn was especially indignant that news reports were calling the attackers “terrorists.” Continue reading →

THREE MORE BAD MOVIE CLASSICS FOR HALLOWEEN

Blood SongHalloween month continues here at Balladeer’s Blog! In previous years I’ve run my list of The Top Eleven Neglected Bad Movie Classics for Halloween and even a followup list of eleven more. The links to those lists are below. Right now here’s a look at three more classically bad horror flicks for the season.

BLOOD SONG (1982) – Singer Frankie Avalon as a 1980’s- style slasher villain! The godfather’s Luca Brasi (Lenny Montana) as a co-star and co-producer! Who could possibly resist that? Frankie plays a homicidal maniac who escapes from an insane asylum with his beloved flute/recorder type thingee.

Turns out years earlier a girl played by Donna Wilkes – soon to star as Angel herself – got a blood transfusion from Psycho Frankie. In this movie’s logic-free universe that means that she has a mental link with our mad slasher. This link is causing him to track her down to kill her with the single-minded fury that Mike Myers showed toward Jaime Lee Curtis in the Halloween movies. Continue reading →

A COMPLETE LIST OF NON-MUSLIMS WHO HAVE BEHEADED MUSLIMS IN RECENT DECADES

A SYMBOL OF HATRED, SLAVERY, MASS RAPE AND INFANTICIDE.

A SYMBOL OF HATRED, SLAVERY, MASS RAPE AND INFANTICIDE.

There aren’t any, of course. Only savages still behead people here in the 21st Century. If you were foolish enough to think there would be you are Ben Affleck- level stupid. Either that or you’re one of those cowardly enablers of Muslim violence who pretend that you think Christians, Jews, Buddhists etc are “just as violent as Muslims are” here in the 21st Century. And remember, I’m a non-believer, so don’t waste my time trying to accuse me of being Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Wiccan, etc.

LA MALROCHE (1833): GOTHIC HORROR

La MalrocheLA MALROCHE (1833) – By Louisa Stuart Costello. Halloween month continues here at Balladeer’s Blog with yet another look at a neglected work of Gothic Horror, this one dealing with witchcraft, a monstrous child and supernatural beasts. Louisa Costello, the female author of this eerie tale, deserves to be much better known.

La Malroche refers to a mountain in a dreaded and generally avoided area of 1830’s France. At the foot of that mountain is the town of Escures, where only people too poor to have fled the area still live. Also near the foot of La Malroche is the home of the witch called La Bonne Femme (“The Good Woman”) by the local citizenry, a title bestowed on her out of fear rather than merit.   Continue reading →

PULP HERO G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES: STORIES FIFTY-EIGHT TO SIXTY

Once again I'll say that a young Bruce Campbell would have made a perfect G-8 in a television series!

Once again I’ll say that a young Bruce Campbell would have made a perfect G-8 in a television series!

Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the neglected Pulp Hero G-8. This is a story-by- story look at the adventures of this World War One American fighter pilot who – along with his two wingmen the Battle Aces – took on various supernatural and super- scientific menaces thrown at the Allied Powers by the Central Powers of Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Muslim Turks.

G-8 was created by Robert J Hogan in 1933 when World War One was still being called simply the World War or the Great War. Over the next eleven years Hogan wrote 110 stories featuring the adventures of G-8, the street-smart pug Nippy Weston and the brawny giant Bull Martin. The regular cast was rounded out by our hero’s archenemy Doktor Krueger, by Battle, G-8’s British manservant and by our hero’s girlfriend R-1: an American spy/ nurse whose real name, like G-8’s was never revealed.

Fangs of the Serpent REAL58. FANGS OF THE SERPENT (July 1938) – Introducing  the German intelligence agent known only by the codename the Serpent. Kaiser Wilhelm himself gives the Serpent his latest mission: to destroy G-8 and his Battle Aces. A-1, Hogan’s fictional head of American Intelligence, personally warns our hero about this new adversary’s abilities.

The Serpent, like plenty of other G-8 villains, sports a memorable disfigurement. In his case a twisted spine from which he gets his codename and his distorted posture.  That would be a detriment to his career as a spy if not for the fact that his real strength lies in his supernatural mastery of the art of hypnosis. GOTHIC HORROR: THE DEVIL’S ELIXIRS (1815)

Devil's Elixirs 2THE DEVIL’S ELIXIRS – By E.T.A. Hoffmann. Halloween month continues at Balladeer’s Blog with a look at another neglected work of Gothic Horror. As I’ve mentioned in the past, horror stories from back then that feature supernatural menaces OTHER than vampires and ghosts hold a special appeal to me. The Devil’s Elixirs features a doppleganger.

Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog will remember I’m a big fan of Hoffmann’s macabre stories and have even reviewed Offenbach’s opera Tales of Hoffmann, based on various short stories of the Austrian writer. The central character of the novel is Medardus, a Capuchin monk. Continue reading →

CALLIPPIDES (circa 400 BC), THE ANCIENT GREEK COMEDY

Annoy your friends with your pretentiousness: refer to shows like I Love Lucy and Make Room for Daddy as "Parathespian Comedies."

Annoy your friends with your pretentiousness: refer to shows like I Love Lucy and Make Room for Daddy as “Parathespian Comedies.”

Balladeer’s Blog presents another examination of an ancient Greek comedy. Callippides was written by the comedian Strattis and falls into that comic poet’s specialized area: Parathespian Comedies.

Another fun element of our shared humanity with the ancient Athenians who flocked to attend these plays is the fact that even 2,400 years ago audiences were fascinated and entertained by the trappings of “showbiz”. “Parathespian Comedies” were just one of the many sub-genres of ancient Greek comedy but Strattis is the writer most associated with them … by me and the .000001 percent of the population who are into such things.

Yes, a few thousand years before I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Seinfeld and other such sitcoms the spectators at the Theatre of Dionysus were laughing at comedies depicting what it was like to be one of the performing, writing and singing stars of the Athenian stage. The Parathespian Comedies sometimes featured fictional stars as the characters but would also depict real-life figures of the stage in stories that were either wholly fictional or based on backstage gossip of the time.

Callippides was based on the real-life actor and megastar of ancient Greek tragedies. In this particular case Strattis presented a very unflattering comedic poke at Callippides, making jokes that depicted him as a William Shatner-esque ham instead of the accomplished thespian he was often hailed as.   Continue reading →
