AUSTRALIA’S HERO THE SHADOW (1950-1966)

This weekend’s escapist, light-hearted superhero post from Balladeer’s Blog will look at Australia’s very different version of a superhero called the Shadow.

THE SHADOW

Secret Identity: Jimmy Gray

Debut Year: 1950

Origin: When Jimmy Gray inherited the family fortune, he used the money to train himself physically and mentally to fight crime and wrongdoing around the world. He would often rob the criminals and give the proceeds to charity.

Powers: The Shadow was in peak physical condition, was more agile than an acrobat and was a master of unarmed combat.

He wore a tight purple custom mask to conceal his face and tight rubberoid gloves to conceal his fingerprints.

Comment: Many of this hero’s villains were femmes fatale along the line of the Spirit’s foes. For the Shadow, that included Fifi Daniels, commander of an all-female crew of pirates in a submarine, Mira, an Arabian belly dancer, Senora Montez, a former Nazi spy turned Communist spy, and Lol Soho, international smuggler and jewel thief.

Despite his 1950 series being canceled in March 1952 after 23 issues, a new Shadow series was launched later in 1952. That second series ran until 1966, making it the 2nd longest running comic book series in Australian history.

ANCIENT SCIENCE FICTION: THE PLURALITY OF WORLDS (1686)

conversationsCONVERSATIONS ON THE PLURALITY OF WORLDS (1686) – Written by Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle. The author offered up some science fiction concepts that were considered real possibilities in 1686. These ideas were presented within the frame of conversations, as indicated in the full title. The conversations happened over the course of six evenings.

FIRST EVENING – Bernard presented these conversations as taking place during flirtatious evening walks with a fictional Marchioness based on his real-life female acquaintance Madame de la Mesangire of Rouen. Due to the time period, she had not been educated in the sciences and Fontenelle needed to introduce her to certain concepts from the ground up.

This first evening found him explaining what 1686 science knew about the rotation of the Earth and the Earth’s revolution around the Sun. An interesting, outdated element of the conversation came in when Bernard discussed what some scholars of the time apparently believed – that space was not a vacuum but was made up of “celestial fluid” in which the Earth and certain other bodies moved. NELLIE BLY STARTED HER TRIP AROUND THE WORLD: NOVEMBER 14th, 1889

nellie bly aroundNELLIE BLY (Elizabeth J. Cochrane), one of the most famous reporters in history, set forth on this date in 1889 in her well-publicized attempt to make it around the world in less than the 80 days used by Jules Verne’s fictional Phileas Fogg. She was 25 years old.

The newspaper employing Nellie at the time was the New York World, with part of the value of Bly’s stunt being publicity for that paper, which heavily emphasized the word “world” in the story’s headlines.    Continue reading

NOVEMBER THIRTEENTH ROUNDUP OF NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS

Another look at current events from Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog as we Americans wonder if President Donald Trump will make it to Inauguration Day alive and well. He’s been very open about his plans to limit the power of America’s spy agencies. The last president to do that was John F. Kennedy when he vowed to shatter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter those pieces to the winds. JFK was eliminated.

Also, in November and December of 2016 anti-Trump fascists tried intimidating the members of the Electoral College into not casting their votes for Trump even though he won the election, even going so far as DOXING those Electors. I mention this because too many people seem to have forgotten the anti-Trump push for “Faithless Electors” 8 years ago.

FEMA SCANDAL ABOUT THE HARRIS-BIDEN REGIME TELLING HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF WORKERS NOT TO OFFER AID AT HOMES WITH TRUMP SIGNS EXPANDS. Looks like the administrator who was fired was just part of the story. These are Chicago tactics.

THE LATEST UGLY REVELATIONS ABOUT CORRUPT REPUBLICAN SENATOR MITCH MCCONNELL. Even more HERE.

CENTRAL AMERICAN NATIONS FORM REGIONAL COALITION TO WORK WITH TRUMP.

SAUDIS EXPRESS HOPE THAT TRUMP CAN COMPLETE HIS WORK OF PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

DEMOCRATS AT NBC NEWS ADMIT THAT TRUMP REALIGNED THE ENTIRE POLITICAL MAP.

POMPOUS DEMOCRAT “ACADEMIC” JUSTLY RIDICULED FOR HER ELECTION DAY VIDEO SNOBBISHLY STATING HER EXPERTISE TOLD HER KAMALA WOULD WIN. She roundly ridiculed a person she merely SUSPECTED of being a Trump voter. This person embodies what hilariously pretentious asses Democrats are. More HERE.

EVEN MORE DEMOCRAT SNOBBERY FROM “ACADEMIA” (LMAO) – “Educated people vote blue.” Keep it up, Democrats. You drive away more and more voters.

DEMOCRAT ICON MICHAEL DOUGLAS ADMITS THAT TRUMP HAS MADE HIS PARTY THE “PARTY OF THE PEOPLE” WHILE DEMOCRATS ARE SEEN AS “ELITISTS.” Tell us something we don’t know. Continue reading

A FISTFUL OF ELY: RON ELY’S SPAGHETTI WESTERNS

Actor Ron Ely passed away not long ago. He was best known for playing Tarzan but in keeping with the theme of Balladeer’s Blog I’m taking a look at Ron’s Eurowesterns.

ron ely as hallelujahHALLELUJAH AND SARTANA … SONS OF GOD (1972) – Ron Ely played Hallelujah and Alberto Dell’Acqua was Sartana in this at best so-so Spaghetti Western.

For newbies to the more obscure level of Italo-Western heroes, Hallelujah (at left) was a gunslinging conman and gambler whose nickname came from his impersonations of clergymen as part of his grift.

alleluja and sartanaSartana, on the other hand, was a long-established Spaghetti Western figure who was portrayed by plenty of other actors during the 60s and 70s. Sartana was a pro bono vigilante when he wasn’t busy at card tables across the west.

Ron Ely’s Hallelujah was a combination of James Garner’s Bret Maverick depiction of a gunman-grifter with a heart of gold crossed with Terence Hill’s seriocomic gunslinger Trinity from his own trilogy of movies. Continue reading

FORGOTTEN TELEVISION: ALL THAT GLITTERS (1977)

All that glittersALL THAT GLITTERS (1977) – With the syndicated late-night soap opera satire Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman becoming a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s, Norman Lear launched this oddball, self-consciously “adult” program which added a touch of parallel world sci-fi stories to the soapiness.

All That Glitters was a comedy set in a world where women were in charge and men filled workplace and societal roles filled by women in our world at the time. The humor in this show is painfully dated but the inversion of roles still gives it a certain strange watchability.

All That glitters 2Want to see women running the business world and men serving as secretaries while getting ogled and sexually harassed? This show’s got it! Want to see a tuxedo-clad groom carrying flowers and walking down the aisle toward his intended bride? This show’s got it! Continue reading

VETERANS DAY: SIX RECOMMENDED BOOKS PLUS MORE

Happy Veterans Day, formerly called Armistice Day since it marked the end of World War One on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. Here are six books on that often-neglected conflict. (I will omit Barbara Tuchman’s Guns of August because of how well-known it already is.)

Hat in the Ring GangTHE HAT IN THE RING GANG: THE COMBAT HISTORY OF THE 94th AERO SQUADRON IN WORLD WAR ONE – Written by Charles Woolley, this excellent book covers America’s 94th Aero Squadron aka The Hat in the Ring Gang.

When it comes to Flying Aces of World War One the Americans in the Lafayette Escadrille get the lion’s share of the attention. That’s ironic since Eddie Rickenbacker, America’s greatest ace of the war, served in the Hat in the Ring Gang along with many other famous paladins of the skies. To buy it click HERE

Doughboy WarDOUGHBOY WAR: THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN WORLD WAR I – Written/ edited by James H Hallas. I feel this book is perfect for people who are just diving into World War One and don’t want inundated with all of the overwhelming details of more involved works. Doughboy War covers every aspect of American soldiers’ experiences in the Great War, often in their own words.

Follow them from enlistment, training and crossing the Atlantic to facing action in Europe, including accounts of the ordeals faced by wounded Doughboys. To buy it click HERE    Continue reading
