Villains: The New Serpent Squad

NOTE: This week’s look at 3 issues and next week’s look at 4 issues will wrap up my look at Captain America & the Falcon’s 1970s classics, as the various storylines reach their finale.

Synopsis: We pick up shortly after the end of the previous issue. It is nighttime and Steve Rogers (Captain America) has just parted company with his former fellow Avenger Hawkeye (Clint Barton). Hawkeye had posed as a villain called the Golden Archer and waged a vendetta against Steve Rogers to rekindle his interest in superheroing.

After revealing his true identity, Hawkeye convinced Steve to go back to being a superhero, just NOT Captain America, since he was so disillusioned now. He could just become a new hero with an all-new pseudonym.

Thrilled with the idea, Steve hurriedly walks back to the New York City apartment he shares with former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter. He starts making plans for how to go about creating his new superhero “brand.” Continue reading →

DAY TWO RESULTS FROM THE USCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

The latest results from the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) –

USCAA DIVISION ONE

paul quinn college tigersFIRST SEMIFINAL – The top seeded PAUL QUINN COLLEGE TIGERS (should be the Purple Tigers) took the court against the 4 seeds – the BRYANT & STRATTON COLLEGE AT ALBANY BOBCATS.

This catfight saw the Tigers smother the Bobcats on both sides of the ball, leading them 42-23 by Halftime. After the break Paul Quinn College maintained its distance from BSC-Albany the rest of way, going on to win the game 80-59. Spencer McElway and Brandon Johnson led the Tigers with 14 points each.  Continue reading →

DAVID LYNCH’S WISTERIA/ UNRECORDED NIGHT

laura screamingHere at Balladeer’s Blog I’ve never made any secret of my fondness for David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks. I’m even a huge fan of the 2017 continuation of the series. Well, for the most part. I could have done without the introduction of time traveling into the series and the notion of Laura Palmer being some sort of Chosen One figure.

At any rate, the past two years have seen plenty of rumors that a Season Four or a spinoff series or a companion series to Twin Peaks was in the works. The working titles that supposedly concealed the fact that this new Lynch project was actually a Twin Peaks show were Wisteria and/ or Unrecorded Night.    Continue reading →

DEMOCRATS STILL HOSTILE TO THE WORKING CLASS AND THE POOR

democrat platform hatredHere at Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog I’ve long pointed out that one of the many things that drove so many like me away from the Democrats is the way that financially comfortable Democrats are every bit as callous and uncaring toward the working class and the poor as the richest snobs ever were.

Democrat court jester Stephen Colbert aka “Joe Biden’s C*ck-Holster” recently expressed The Party’s pompous disdain for the rest of us. Colbert said he’s “willing to pay more for gas because that’s the cost of a clean conscience. Also, he’ll “pay $15/gallon because he owns a Tesla.” Got it, peasants?

The Democrats’ attitude is still “Screw you people for not being one percenters like us media cheerleaders for The Party!” Unfeeling pigs like Colbert don’t care how much you’re already suffering because of Joe Biden’s inflation and his other disastrous policies. Many of them also adhere to The Party snobbery which dictates that if you don’t like how much you have to pay for gas, just buy an electric vehicle.

To raise an old question, I’d like to ask Democrats “What is it about working men and women that you find so offensive?”

Anyway, all of this reminded me of the way American “comedians” are no longer irreverent or daring. Instead of the old saying about bold comedians being willing to “Insult a king to make a beggar laugh,” gutless snobs like Colbert prefer to “Insult beggars to make kings laugh.”

USCAA COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT DAY ONE RESULTS

Here are the opening day results from the national tournaments for Divisions One and Two in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association).

USCAA DIVISION ONE

bryant and stratton college bobcatsDAY ONE: GAME ONE – The 3rd seeded BRYANT & STRATTON COLLEGE AT BUFFALO BOBCATS took on the 6 seeds – the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (as in Shipbuilders).

The 1st Half was very competitive with the Bobcats holding a mere 33-30 edge over the Builders at Halftime. After the break Bryant & Stratton College at Buffalo got more and more separation from their opponents, ultimately winning the game by a final score of 66-52. DJ Little’s 21 points led the Bobcats in scoring.

paul quinn college tigersDAY ONE: GAME TWO – Up next the top seeds – the PAUL QUINN COLLEGE TIGERS (should be the Purple Tigers) – played the 8th seeded BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES.

The Purple Tigers seized offensive control over the Big Blues and were on top 47-32 by the Half. From there Paul Quinn College confidently kept Bluefield State at arm’s length for an 88-74 victory. Spencer McElway led the Tigers with his unusual Double-Double of 23 points and 20 rebounds. Continue reading →

ALEXANDRE DUMAS: THREE NEGLECTED SWASHBUCKLER NOVELS

“HELLO DERE!”

Alexandre Dumas pere is synonymous with swashbuckling historical adventures like The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Man in the Iron Mask.

His name became SO associated with swordplay and intrigue that even a Dumas novel like The Corsican Brothers, which in reality lacks any true action elements, has long been adapted as if it’s a swashbuckler. That has always involved altering the original story beyond recognition, which is why no two Corsican Brothers movies bear much resemblance to each other and can’t even seem to agree on a time period.

That’s a shame since plenty of other novels by Alexandre Dumas are loaded with action and historical intrigue yet have been largely overlooked when it comes to movies and television. 

GeorgesGEORGES (1843) – Published just one year before The Three Musketeers, this novel is not only a rollicking adventure full of action, romance and double-crosses but it deals with racial issues in such a way that you would have thought it would have been adapted for film four or five decades ago. POLITICAL CARTOON ROUNDUP: MARCH 6th

democrat republican otherIndependent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog takes a look at some recent political cartoons and the failures of elected Democrats and Republicans. (Plus, how about Joe Biden’s latest senile gibberish. He actually said “How did we get to the place where, you know, Putin decides he’s gonna just invade Russia?”)

We start out with the item below ridiculing Joe Biden’s idiotic lie about outfighting a street hood called Corn Pop. This Tall Tale/ outrageous fabrication was always kicked off by Biden’s inane remark “Corn Pop was a bad dude …” The “bad dude” wording is typical of the way privileged white one percenter career criminals like Joe Biden feel they need to talk down to voters of color through embarrassing attempts at sounding “ghetto.”

MORE CHAMPS FROM COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS

college of idaho coyoteCASCADE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The last two teams standing in this conference tourney were the top seeded COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES and the 5 seeds – the SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (should be the Sea Gulls).

The Coyotes went on a 16-2 run in the opening Half and dominated the game from there. By Halftime the College of Idaho led SOU 40-27, then went on to win the game by a final tally of 78-55. Jake O’Neil of the Coyotes led his team with 13 points. * THE COYOTES ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE CASCADE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE *   Continue reading →

FOOL KILLER SIXTY TWO: MARCH 1913

*** The ceremonies and participants involved in the March 4th inauguration. NOTE: It was not until the Franklin Roosevelt years that inaugurations changed to January. The Fool Killer attended in person, another difference from Charles Napoleon Bonaparte Evans’ original Fool Killer in the 1800s, who religiously avoided Washington DC for fear of being corrupted by setting foot there.

              In another turn of phrase that seemed almost modern day – like his coining of the term “Truth Bombs” in 1910 – Pearson’s Fool Killer titled his tale of Inauguration Day I Went, I Saw, I Spewed. Because Pearson and his Fool Killer despised both the outgoing William Howard Taft and the incoming Woodrow Wilson he described the swearing-in as Uncle Sam taking off a pair of dirty clothes, then putting them back on.

              He described the fools lining up for hours just to catch a glimpse of political figures as they paraded by, and sneered at the unseemly imperiousness of the inaugural ceremonies for a supposed democratic republic. (I agree.)

                           The Fool Killer also labeled the military band a “Murderer’s Union.” After additional insults regarding the pomp and circumstance and the “glittering generalities” of Wilson’s inaugural address, he moved on to other topics.   

Some of his other targets this month:

*** The toadying astrologer who prepared a horoscope of the “present and past lives” of the soon to be wed high society Helen Gould and Finley Shepard. In the kind of idiotic obsequiousness shown to celebrity couples of today, like the repulsive Harry and Meghan, the astrologer depicted the pair as soul-mates during the days of ancient Babylon, then Egypt, then the Roman Empire and so on to 1700s France and finally the present day. The Fool Killer wryly pointed out that money can even buy aggrandizing gibberish like this.    Continue reading →
