EIGHT BLAXPLOITATION FILMS THAT DESERVE A CLOSER LOOK

Blaxploitation films are often dismissed by serious film students in the same way that Spaghetti Westerns are. Despite the widespread assumption that blaxploitation flicks were about nothing but the Three P’s – pimps, pushers and prostitutes – the reality is that many of them dealt with explosive issues in a way that mainstream filmmakers of the time would have shied away from. Here are eight examples that featured a premise or an approach that truly pushed the envelope.

8. FORCE FOUR (1975) – Also released under the unimaginative title Black Force, this film had an ingenious premise but its flawed delivery makes you wish someone would remake it.

The movie featured four covert operators with various commando and martial arts skills. The quartet, the “Force Four” of the title, were mercenaries specializing in stealing various artifacts that were plundered  from African nations during the colonial period.

Force Four would retrieve those artifacts from wealthy customers of black market art and relics and then return them to their clients – the African governments who wanted those items restored to their proper place. Think Mission: Impossible films crossed with the Lara Croft flicks for a comparison.

Unfortunately the incredibly low budget Continue reading

MAN IN BLACK REVIEWS HAS BEEN KIND ENOUGH TO ADD ME AS A REVIEWER

Your old buddy Balladeer has been added as a movie reviewer at the eccentric culture site Man In Black Reviews. There’s an entire team of witty and informative reviewers at that site and they cover movies, comics, games, tv, novels and music.

My review of the obscure Philippine monster movies about Zuma (pictured at left) is on their site right now at this link: https://glitternight.com/2011/06/27/bad-movie-page-zuma-1985/

While you’re there check out the other items and add the place to your favorites. It’s what Whitney Houston would have wanted, dammit!

BAD MOVIE PAGE: THE BODY SHOP (1973)

THE BODY SHOP (1973) – Category: A neglected bad movie classic that deserves a Plan 9-sized cult following

The Body Shop is one of my all-time favorite bad movie gems. It includes all the little extras that separate mere bombs from the truly legendary turkeys and, like another neglected classic, The Wizard of Mars (see my Bad Movie page for the review), just keeps getting worse and Continue reading

NOT A BAD MOVIE: AMSTERDAMNED (1988)

Amsterdamned

Amsterdamned

AMSTERDAMNED (1988) – Well, this will be an unexpected twist for regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog. Usually I review bad movie classics that don’t have the following they deserve, but in this case I’m reviewing a film that has a reputation for being bad, but really isn’t.

I’ve meant to write this review for awhile now. Amsterdamned is one of those films on the “must see” list for many of my fellow bad movie fans. I felt that way for years, too. After all, the film is from the same director who did The Lift, the hilariously bad “killer elevator” movie that I reviewed long ago on this blog. It also Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE: DRIVE-IN MASSACRE (1976)

DRIVE-IN MASSACRE (1976) – Category: Gimmick movie worth watching once, but never again

This movie has that certain charm to it that most low-budget 70’s horror films possess. When watching Drive-In Massacre you can’t help but reflect on the fact that the talent of John Carpenter is the only thing separating his milestone film Halloween from the many other 1970’s slice and dice films like this one.

The plot of Drive-In Massacre involves a Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE: THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE (1979)

This is one of the reviews I get the most e-mail over so here it is again for the old fans and the new readers who have been requesting it without realizing I already reviewed it last year. Remember, before requesting a review you may want to see if I reviewed it already by checking my Bad Movies page. https://glitternight.com/bad-movies/

THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE (1979) – Category: Brucesploitation with an enjoyably absurd twist.       In the joyously tasteless beginning of this quintessential Brucesploitation movie British secret agents extract cell samples from the martial arts superstar on his deathbed. Since E-Bay wasn’t around yet they can’t auction off the cell samples so instead they use them to make three Bruce Lee clones to form an elite crime fighting unit.

You have to Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE: DIAL: HELP (1988)

DIAL: HELP (1988) – Category: A neglected bad movie classic that deserves a Plan 9- sized cult following.

This 1988 horror film from Italy (but dubbed into English) deals with a young model, played by Charlotte Lewis, who finds her life turning hellish when she begins being tormented by living phones … yes, living phones. As always with me, I love to laugh at bad horor movies like this that are NOT trying to be funny, but are so disastrously bad and have such ludicrous premises that they are unintentional comedy classics. Remember my reviews of movies like Death Bed, about a killer bed; Deafula, about a deaf vampire and The Lift, about a killer elevator? Lump this flick in with those.

Hardcore horror fans will be stunned to learn that the man behind this laughable mess is none other than Continue reading

NEW YEAR’S EVE BAD MOVIE: NEW YEAR’S EVIL (1980)

The best thing about these seasonal bad movie reviews of mine is the fact that they save a lot of time by being appropriate AND already done. From 2010 it’s a repost of my review of the laughably bad holiday horror film New Year’s Evil.

New Year's EvilNEW YEAR’S EVIL (1980) – Category:  Enjoyably campy bad movie  elevated by kitsch-value in the casting    This is another of those holiday-themed slasher movies that followed in the bloody footsteps of the original Halloween. See my review of the Thanksgiving slasher movie Slasher In The House for more on this odd sub-genre.

Our cups runneth over with kitsch-casting in this little honey. ROZ KELLY, “Pinky Tuscadero” herself, stars as Blaze, an alleged punk rock icon who hosts an alleged punk rock (but really New Wave) concert being televised on New Year’s Eve.

Kelly is Continue reading
