THE VOYAGE OF LORD CETON TO THE SEVEN PLANETS (1765)

RoumierTHE VOYAGE OF LORD CETON TO THE SEVEN PLANETS (1765) – Written by Marie- Anne de Roumier. Though written by a French woman in 1765 this example of “ancient” science fiction was set in 1640’s England. (?) A young Lord in the court of King Charles I travels – along with his sister Monime – into space thanks to an accomodating angel.

This angel is named Zachiel and safely transports his charges all over the solar system and home again. The sun turns out to be inhabited by a studious and thoughtful people devoted to philosophy and natural science. Mercury was inhabited by a hot-tempered and impatient race of semi-humanoids. MOTHER’S DAY BAD MOVIE: HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY – LOVE, GEORGE (1973)

Despite the movie poster's warning this flick won't even untie your shoelaces.

Despite the movie poster’s warning this flick won’t even untie your shoelaces.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! LOVE, GEORGE (1973) – Category: Bad movie elevated by kitsch value in the casting.

Directed by THE Darren McGavin and featuring his wife Kathie Browne in a small role, this hilariously bizarre film is also known as Run, Stranger, Run. “Run, Potential Viewer, Run” would be a more appropriate title. Happy Mother’s Day Love, George (henceforth HMDLG) is often described as a psycho-sexual thriller but actually it is nothing more than a melodramatic soap opera with a few murders and VERY few scenes of blood and gore. Those blood and gore scenes are so over-the-top they are completely at odds with the Continue reading

TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY GOLEM: OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ORDERS THE PRE-EMPTING OF LAST NIGHT’S BENGHAZI EPISODE

Four dead in Benghazi

Four dead in Benghazi

Last night’s episode of the hit cable series Twenty-First Century Golem (about Jewish mythology’s clay monster the Golem having adventures in the present-day) was scratched and a rerun aired in its place after the Obama administration declared that the subject matter – the Golem getting mixed-up in battles with the terrorists behind the attack on America’s diplomatic compound in Benghazi – might inspire violence in the Muslim world. “The producers are lucky their asses aren’t in jail” Obama quipped.

It was a reminder about how Obama lied when claiming that a youtube video that displayed irreverence to Islam caused the 9-11 anniversary attack on the U.S. compound in Libya back in 2012. All the evidence that has come out since then indicates that Obama intentionally lied to spare himself embarrassment and inconvenience during his reelection campaign, fearful that the well-planned Benghazi attack would expose yet another of his administration’s lies: that Al Qaeda was supposedly “on the run.” (Tet Offensive, anyone?)

In an exclusive statement to Balladeer’s Blog Obama had this to say: Continue reading

PULP HERO NORTHWEST SMITH: STORIES SEVEN AND EIGHT

PZO8005-Cover.inddBalladeer’s Blog continues its examination of another neglected pulp hero – in this case Northwest Smith. Created by the female author C.L. Moore in the 1930′s Northwest Smith was a ruthless outer-space smuggler and mercenary decades before Han Solo. With his Venusian partner Yarol at his side and armed with a trusty blaster Smith roamed the solar system in his deceptively fast spaceship The Maid. In the course of their criminal pursuits the two often found themselves in the role of reluctant heroes, sometimes with the fate of entire planets at stake. For more on Northwest Smith and other neglected pulp heroes click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

7. THE COLD GRAY GOD (1935) – A smuggling jaunt has brought Northwest Smith back to Mars. While hanging out in the cold and snowy Martian city of Righa our hero gets hired by a most unusual client. Her name is Jaida, a beautiful Venusian woman who years previously had been THE singing sensation of the Cabaret circuit at the network of casinos and leisure resorts of Jupiter’s colonized moons. At the height of her fame Jaida turned her back on success and went into seclusion.

It turns out the former singer “found religion” in the form of the esoteric worship of The Un-Nameable One, the god of Mars’ distant past. The god is worshipped now only by super-secretive cults throughout the solar system; cults which claim to know the secrets of the ancient lettering which adorns most Martian households but whose meaning has long been forgotten. Jaida hires Smith to recover a stolen relic of the dark religion from the Righa crook who nabbed it. Continue reading

HITTITE MYTH: THE SUN GOD AND THE COW

Love Child: Made fun of in school ...

Love Child: Made fun of in school …

Reaction to my recent examination of Hittite gods and goddesses has been through the roof! To keep up a little with the demand here’s a quick look at another Hittite myth, this one involving the sun god Istanu.

Istanu, the Hittite sun god was riding his solar chariot across the sky one day and noticed that a cow had brazenly wandered into the area where the shepherd goddess Hapantali tended Istanu’s sheep. The sun god let his chariot continue its course, pulled by two of his prized rams with their shining golden fleeces, as he descended to upbraid Hapantali for her oversight in allowing the bovine intruder to graze with his sheep.
