POSTSEASON COLLEGE BASEBALL CONTINUES

In NAIA baseball’s ongoing conference tournaments the Blue Mountain College Toppers (logo at left) are the biggest story so far. They came into the TranSouth Athletic Conference tournament seeded 6th, but on Day 1 of the tourney they upset the number 1 seeds, the Freed Hardeman Lions, then yesterday on Day 2 the Toppers defeated the 4th- seeded Bethel (TN) Wildcats. Today they try to keep their upset mojo going when they take on the 2 seeds, the Union Bulldogs.

Meanwhile a few conference champions have already been crowned. The Lee Flames have won the Southern States Athletic Conference, the LSU- Shreveport Pilots (as in riverboat pilots ) took the Red River Athletic Conference title and the Continue reading

EVALUATING ESPN’S ON-AIR PERSONALITIES

Balladeer's Blog

Balladeer’s Blog

ESPN may not stand for Exclusively Sports Publicist’s Network but the mammoth outfit certainly acts like it. Their soft, “People magazine for athletes” approach to sports coverage makes them fun to watch and listen to in the same way watching bad movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space is fun. If you want actual sports journalism go to Sports Illustrated (SI.com) or Yahoosports, never ESPN.

It’s no coincidence that those other outfits are the ones who have broken every major sports scandal in recent years. ESPN is too thoroughly in bed with the executives in college and professional sports to want to damage their “product” by doing REAL investigative reporting. Here’s Balladeer’s Blog’s evaluation of the sports publicists who do on-air work at “the worldwide leader in suckup”.

Not pictured: Colin Cowherd

1. COLIN COWHERD – With the departure of Jim Rome to the cable outfit called CBS College Sports Cowherd gets the top spot by default. Colin towers over all the other on- air staff at ESPN by virtue of the fact that he has a life outside of sports and therefore doesn’t feel that winning games excuses criminal behavior like his colleagues do.

Cowherd also rejects the journalistic pretensions of the other ESPN sports publicists and repeatedly states that he considers his employer to be in the entertainment business, not the news business. Like all Continue reading

NCCAA COLLEGE BASEBALL POSTSEASON CONTINUES

After 2 days of rainouts the PHILADELPHIA BIBLICAL UNIVERSITY CRIMSON EAGLES (logo at left) finally got to play their East Regional game with the BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE DEFENDERS today at Noon ET. This matchup was worth the wait, as this Instant Classic saw the Crimson Eagles emerge with a very tight 5-4 victory. Send the tape of this game to Cooperstown as a prime example of the intensity of postseason baseball in the NCCAA.

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASEBALL RESULTS FROM APRIL 14TH

The GALVESTON COLLEGE WHITECAPS (logo at left) took on the ANGELINA COLLEGE ROADRUNNERS (not the Joelies) and  crushed them in an 8-2 affair that saw the Whitecaps machine firing on all pistons. Galveston’s Kyle Giusti was among the offensive leaders in the rout.

DIAMOND DAN-O-URA – In a college baseball equivalent of the Battle of Dan-O- Ura (I love pompous and thoroughly inappropriate sports analogies) the NAIA’s top-ranked LSU- SHREVEPORT PILOTS (as in riverboat pilots) clashed with fellow baseball power the UT-BROWNSVILLE SCORPIONS. The Pilots emerged with a 10-9 road victory in one of the weekend’s best games.

NUMBER TWO TAKES A FALL – TWICE – At number 2, the LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES were upset on Friday the 13th by the BRYAN LIONS in a 9-8 Instant Classic. The score was 9-5 going into the 9th inning when the Flames bats got hot (sorry) but wound up one run short of sending the game into extra innings. Yesterday the Flames fell at home to the 16th- ranked AUBURN- MONTGOMERY SENATORS by a score of 8-7. Those one- run losses can really sting!

EAGLES OUTRUN THE HORNETS – The (4) FAULKNER EAGLES came out two runs better than the homestanding SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC RUNNING HORNETS in a 3-1 game that Continue reading
