THE SONGS OF MALDOROR (1868)

Maldoror 2I am always glad to interact with readers of Balladeer’s Blog! Many of you have been asking for a guide to my examination of the surreal horrors in The Songs of Maldoror. Readers asked for it to be the same format I used for the Navajo epic myth about the war god Nayanazgeni battling the dark gods called the Anaye.

THE SONGS OF MALDOROR – First Canto

This work by the author Isidore Ducasse aka the Count de Lautreamont was nearly a century ahead of its time. This neglected masterpiece of surreal horror was so envelope-pushing that Ducasse had the publisher stop printing copies after just eighty-eight were made. He feared that the subject matter in the book might cause him to be arrested or committed to an insane asylum.

Opening Stanzas – An introduction to Maldoror, the book’s mysterious protagonist. Maldoror is a supernatural being who considers God his archenemy & Satan a rival and who regards humans as his prey. Modern readers will recognize in this character elements of Freddy Krueger, Aleister Crowley, Coffin Joe, Heath Ledger’s Joker and the vampire Lestat. Click HERE Continue reading

FATHER’S DAY (2011) – A CULT CLASSIC

Father's DayFATHER’S DAY (2011) – I DEMAND A TEAM-UP OF AHAB FROM FATHER’S DAY AND ASH WILLIAMS FROM THE EVIL DEAD FILMS (and television series).

Sorry, I had to get that out of my system right off the bat. Ahab, the eye-patch sporting hero of the Astron 6 horror film Father’s Day is in my opinion the one true successor to Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams. And considering how unfair the ending of this movie is for Ahab and his two sidekicks a case could even be made for them replacing Ash as the most royally screwed character in the history of gore-soaked horror comedies.

It’s difficult to review this dark, grotesque gem without resorting to a series of catch phrases like “Goes where Dead Alive and similar movies failed to go” or “What Grindhouse hath wrought” or even “Twink and Walnut: They’re NOT Muppets!” Let me start with a more practical line: Do not watch this movie if you can not handle the most offensive violence, concepts, gore and deranged sexuality imaginable.  Continue reading

SATANA THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER

Satana2

Satana the Devil’s Daughter

Comic book movies have been all the rage for quite a while now. With the explosive financial success of the movie Deadpool despite its R rating there is supposedly a mad rush now in Hollywood to find other comic book projects that were previously overlooked. For some reason the film industry had convinced itself that comic book movies would have a hard time making money if they were rated R.

The time is perfect for SATANA THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER.

How has this character NOT been the subject of multiple movies by this point? You’d think that Marvel would have learned long ago not to let its strong female horror figures lie unused. For decades Stan and friends let their 1970s character Rachel Van Helsing, the young blonde descendant of a long line of vampire slayers go unexploited only to watch potential millions of dollars fly away as Buffymania took hold in the 90s.   Continue reading

THE MACHINE TO KILL (1924): FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

machine to killGaston Leroux’s The Machine to Kill was written in NINETEEN TWENTY-FOUR. Many book sites list it as 1935, but that was just the year it was finally translated into English.

Personally I would use the title The Clockwork Dead Man or The Clockwork Killer because for modern readers The Machine to Kill sounds like a traditional science fiction tale about technology run amok.

In reality this neglected Gaston Leroux novel is a horror/sci fi hybrid about an android/ cyborg mix whose mechanized body has been outfitted with the brain, eyes and nervous system of a guillotined murderer. The robotic man – called Gabriel – was created by Dr Jacques Cotentin, who needed an absolutely fresh brain, hence having to settle for a just-executed criminal. Continue reading

MONSTER RALLY

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM BALLADEER’S BLOG! Here’s a look at some of the neglected monsters I’ve covered over the years. These horrific figures deserve as much love as the better known characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Crying Woman and many others.

Squaw Hollow SensationSETHOS

First Appearance: The Squaw Hollow Sensation (1879)

Cryptid Category: Aztec mummy

Lore: Around the year 800 AD an Aztec scholar named Sethos drank the Draught of the Everlasting Covenant and went into a state of suspended animation. In 1879 mining operations uncovered the tomb where he was hidden away.

A scientist of the era mastered the technique of reviving Sethos and successfully restored him to full life. Sethos’ body was hideously mummified but intact except for a gaping hole in his skull in the middle of his forehead from the experiment to revive him. Continue reading

ASH VS (THE) EVIL DEAD IS STILL COMING OCT 31st

Army of Darkness big skull faceYes, it’s another cover from one of the many Army of Darkness comic book series to come and go over the years. It’s all part of building the mood for the Starz series Ash vs (the) Evil Dead on Halloween!

Ash Williams, the man with the boomstick and the chainsaw hand takes on Deadites galore in the new cable series just like he did in these comic book series.

ASH VS THE EVIL DEAD ARRIVES ON HALLOWEEN

Army of Darkness CthulhuOctober is Halloween Month! And this Halloween brings the extra treat of Bruce Campbell’s character Ash Williams returning to fight even more Deadites in the Starz cable show Ash vs (the) Evil Dead.

The series looks to be in the spirit of the various Army of Darkness comic book series’ that came and went over the years so I will periodically post a few covers until the 31st arrives. Regarding this first cover it’s only appropriate that Ash tangles with Herbert West, Reanimator and even more appropriate that his clash with that graduate of Miskatonic Medical School leads to an encounter with Cthulhu himself! (I’m sure you’ll recall Miskatonic University possessed one of the few surviving copies of the Necronomicon.)  Continue reading

ASH VS THE EVIL DEAD – DEBUTING ON HALLOWEEN

Ash vs the Evil DeadBruce Campbell, Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert are launching a cable television continuation of the movie that first brought them fame and big bucks – The Evil Dead. The Brucemeister General returns to his role of Ash Williams with tongue firmly in cheek  for the type of self-deprecating humor and gross-out fun that fans have loved for decades now.

In the new Starz series Ash vs the Evil Dead the dark forces unleashed in the original film have returned 30 years later to plague Ash and various supporting characters – including one played by Lucy Lawless (Tapert’s wife), who has grown almost as pudgy as Bruce Campbell himself. That’s not meant in a nasty way, by the way. I point it out because a lot of people fail to recognize Lawless in the series trailer I link to below.

Ash vs the Evil Dead debuts on Halloween of this year. The series’ approach seems to reflect the ghoulishly fun spirit of the Army of Darkness comic book series which saw the man with the chainsaw hand and boomstick battle legions of Deadites while plagued by his frequent bad luck. Enjoy the trailer, but be warned – for some reason NOBODY says “Join us … Join us”.

MALDOROR: THE FINALE

Balladeer’s Blog concludes its examination of the macabre 1868 French language work The Songs of Maldoror. (“Mal d’Auror”, meaning Evil’s Dawn or The Dawn of Evil.)

CANTO SIX: STANZA TEN

The best cover depiction of the message of this final Stanza

The best cover depiction of  Maldoror’s message.

Today it ends. A moral, ontological and supernatural battle that has raged since the dawn of creation comes to a close in the heart of Paris.

God – be he Creator or Demiurge, compassionate deity or power-crazed sadist – meets for the last time in combat with Maldoror.

When this day is over one of these two beings will never again walk the Earth. Continue reading
