NAVAJO EPIC MYTH: THE WAR GOD VS THE ANAYE

Nayanazgeni

Nayanazgeni, the Navajo god of war.

Readers have been asking for a Chapter Guide to my exhaustive examination of God Slayer, my title for the Navajo myth about Nayanazgeni, their god of war, and his quest to destroy the Alien Gods called the Anaye. Here it is:

I. BIRTH OF THE ANAYE – This chapter deals with the Separation Myth and how Navajo women’s unnatural sex acts (or liasons with Coyote or possibly Begochidi) spawned the dark, alien gods called the Anaye – click HERE

II. WHEN A GOD DIES – Nayanazgeni (“Alien God Slayer”) notches his first kill as he takes down a gigantic, double-headed Anaye who rides upon a Kaiju-sized cougar – click HERE    Continue reading →

SON OF THE BLACK MASS: FULL CIRCLE KILLING (1964)

Full Moon Killing aBalladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the Son of the Black Mass series of Samurai films. This is the sixth film overall but just the third starring legendary Raizo Ichikawa. The films were based on Renzaburo Shibata’s novels about Nemuri Kyoshiro, a red-haired fallen Samurai whose odd hair coloring was the result of his mixed birth. A Portuguese Christian missionary dabbling in Satanism raped Nemuri’s mother during a Black Mass, hence his red hair, outcast status and supernatural abilities.

FULL CIRCLE KILLING (1964) – Beginning with the next film the Nemuri Kyoshiro series really hits the dark, offbeat and transgressive stride that it is most remembered for. Think of Full Circle Killing as a stylistic stepping stone, since it has a cynical Samurai Noir feel to it plus heavier blood & gore as well as further clues about the supernatural nature of our hero’s Full Moon Death Strike. We also get our first hint in the movies that Nemuri can sense the whispers of the dead whenever he passes by cemeteries, a concept more fully developed in the novels (which I will review separately).   Continue reading →

SON OF THE BLACK MASS: SWORD OF ADVENTURE (1964)

Sword of Adventure 2Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the Son of the Black Mass  Samurai films from Japan. In the previous installment I reviewed the first of the films to star Raizo Ichikawa, the man who made the character his own even though there were three films made with the figure before Ichikawa and two after his death in 1969.

The title character was Kyoshiro Nemuri – a red-haired Samurai, the offspring of a Japanese woman and the insane Portugese Christian Missionary who raped her. That madman was dabbling in Satanism and so Nemuri was conceived during a Black Mass, hence the title of the novels and the subsequent film series. Continue reading →

GEFJUN: NORSE GODDESS

GefjunBalladeer’s Blog’s previous looks at neglected deities from the Norse pantheon of gods have been pretty popular, so here’s another one.

GEFJUN – This fertility deity is one of the most misunderstood goddesses from Norse myths and that’s saying something. Gefjun is sometimes referred to as a virgin, but her four sons might disagree with that notion. (Most likely it’s another misunderstanding about how ancient goddesses were often called “virgins” simply because they weren’t married, not because they were celibate.) Those sons were the product of Gefjun mating with Jotuns (Giants).

In the same way that the Korean goddess Halmang was a localized “Mother Earth” for just Jeju Island, Gefjun filled a similar role for Zealand, the largest island in Denmark. By one account Gefjun convinced (or tricked) the Swedish King Gylfi into granting her as much land as she could plow and cultivate for herself. Continue reading →

INFINITE HORIZON: NEGLECTED SUPERHERO TEAM

Infinite Horizon 1

*** *** *** *** *** ***  Infinite Horizon #1

With the Suicide Squad movie hitting theaters, I was reminded again of how comic book-crazed Pop Culture has become. In the spirit of my 2015 examination of Australian-made superheroes here’s a brief look at the ORIGINAL SIX members of the Israeli superteam called Infinite Horizon (Adiri Atchelet).

Ofer Zanzuri created the team in 2004. If the response to this post is as great as it was for Australian superheroes I’ll feature the two newer members of Infinite Horizon.

Doctor ZroaDOCTOR Z’ROA

Secret Identity: Reuben Bachar, MD

Powers: Doctor Z’Roa can stretch and morph his shank limb into a variety of shapes and sizes. Think of him as being a combination of the Marvel Comics hero Mr Fantastic (Reed Richards) and the Marvel Comics villain the Sandman, but with his powers localized in three of his limbs alone. He has elements of DC’s Metamorpho, too.

Doctor Zroa 2

*** *** *** Doctor Z’Roa

Comment: The good Doctor’s superhero name comes from Z’Roa, referring to the shank limb portion of the sacrificial meal in Jewish rituals. Reuben Bachar is the family man of Infinite Horizon, with a wife and five children. Continue reading →
