TOP FOUR FORGOTTEN MILITARY UNITS FROM AMERICAN WARS

As part of this upcoming Memorial Day celebration Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of neglected areas of United States military history.

Oneida Nation's First Allies Unit

Oneida Nation’s First Allies Unit

4. THE ONEIDA NATION’S FIRST ALLIES UNIT

Conflict: Revolutionary War

Comment: The Oneida Nation of Native Americans were America’s first allies. During the Revolutionary War most Native American tribes sided with the British but the Oneida Nation, under Chief Shenendoah (sic), led his people to ally themselves with the emerging United States. The Oneida alliance with the U.S. therefore PREDATED France’s recognition of an independent America.

The Oneida warriors fought alongside American forces throughout upstate New York, most notably at the Battles of Oriskany and Saratoga. They also provided desperately needed food and medical supplies for the Continental Army during the terrible winter at Valley Forge. Two treaties were signed and honored to this very day regarding Oneida sovereignty, retention of their land and a yearly ceremonial delivery of bolts of cloth to the Oneida leaders. That ceremony continues once a Continue reading

THE LATEST COLLEGE BASEBALL RESULTS

* NJCAA *

Herkimer College GeneralsDISTRICT 3-A – CHAMPIONSHIP – Yesterday saw the final three games to decide this District’s title. First the HERKIMER COLLEGE GENERALS lambasted the ERIE COLLEGE KATS in an 11-3 manhandling.   ###   Then the ONONDAGA COLLEGE LASERS utterly annihilated what little remained of Erie College’s self esteem. The Lasers eviscerated the Kats THIRTEEN to NOTHING.   ###   And finally in the title clash itself the Herkimer College Generals masterfully tripled the offensive output of the Onondaga Lasers, defeating them by a score of 9-3. * THE GENERALS ADVANCE TO THE NJCAA3 WORLD SERIES! *

Tyler ApachesDISTRICT 3-C – CHAMPIONSHIP – Over the course of this District’s tourney each of the other title contenders had fallen by the wayside. The North Lake College Blazers, the Coastal Bend College Cougars and the North Arkansas College Pioneers all ended their postseason runs one day short of the championship game. The TYLER COLLEGE APACHES and the EASTFIELD COLLEGE HARVESTERS were the two teams left standing. Though both schools have storied baseball teams the Apaches completely dominated yesterday, routing the Harvesters ELEVEN to ONE! * THE APACHES ADVANCE TO THE NJCAA3 WORLD SERIES! Continue reading

HITTITE MYTHOLOGY: THE MOUNTAIN GOD AND THE DEER

Hittite empireHere at Balladeer’s Blog I’m nothing if not responsive to readers! The mania over the Hittite myths I’ve been examining lately shows no signs of abating so here is another look – this time at a didactic tale involving the mountain god.

Zaliyanu, the god of the mountain which bears his name, was kind enough to shelter a deer that was fleeing hunters. The pursuit had begun on a neighboring mountain whose god didn’t dare risk the wrath of the hunting god Kurunta by sheltering the terrified creature. Zaliyanu, the greatest of the mountain deities, had no such compunction. Continue reading

fresno pacific sunbirdsDAY FOUR – Yesterday was the final day of the 2014 College World Series in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association). Three games brought the action to a close, the two semifinals and then the championship game. The first semifinal saw the 4 seeds – the FRESNO PACIFIC UNIVERSITY SUNBIRDS take on the 7th seeded CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS. The Sunbirds, playing their best baseball at just the right time of year, authoritatively downed the Yellow Jackets  6-1.

The second  semifinal was played between the 3rd seeded LEE UNIVERSITY FLAMES and the Cinderella 9 seeds – the SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS. This explosive game saw the Flames emerge victorious by a final score of 11-8 to to set up the Fresno Pacific versus Lee University clash for the crown.

In the championship game last evening the bats were as red-hot as they were in the second semifinal that afternoon. By an odd coincidence the final score was once again 11-8 but this time the winners were the Sunbirds! * CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SUNBIRDS, THE NCCAA BASEBALL CHAMPIONS FOR 2014!*     Continue reading

PULP HERO NORTHWEST SMITH: STORIES NINE AND TEN

Northwest Smith 6Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of another neglected pulp hero – in this case Northwest Smith. Created by the female author C.L. Moore in the 1930′s Northwest Smith was a ruthless outer-space smuggler and mercenary decades before Han Solo. With his Venusian partner Yarol at his side and armed with a trusty blaster Smith roamed the solar system in his deceptively fast spaceship The Maid. In the course of their criminal pursuits the two often found themselves in the role of reluctant heroes, sometimes with the fate of entire planets at stake. For more on Northwest Smith and other neglected pulp heroes click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

9. LOST PARADISE (1936) – A smuggling job has taken Northwest Smith and Yarol to Earth. Afterward the pair find themselves relaxing in New York City which, in their era, is a multi-leveled metropolis reaching high into the sky. The pair witness the theft of an enigmatic parcel from a very small and fragile man. That man turns out to be a member of the Seles race; a people who have secretly lived among humans for millions of years. The Seles are so ancient in fact that they lived on Earth long before the continents had their present shape. The tectonic shifts that created the modern-day layout of the planet destroyed the cities of the Seles, who established subterranean bases where they have lived undetected by humanity since then.

The man whom Smith and Yarol are helping is one of the many agents the Seles have sent topside to infiltrate and keep an eye on the surface-dwellers over the eons. He hires the two outlaws to recover the stolen parcel and offers huge amounts of money. Yarol calculates that the legendary secret of the Seles’ technology is more valuable than any other offers from the diminutive man and, desperate to get his parcel back, the Seles agent agrees to those terms. USCAA WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CROWNED; NCCAA WORLD SERIES DAY TWO PLUS NAIA & NJCAA PLAYOFFS CONTINUED

* USCAA *

Lindenwood-Belleville LynxCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Yesterday was the final day of the 2014 World Series for the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association). The 2nd seeded LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY AT BELLEVILLE LYNX were 3-0 in Series play and were simply awaiting their title game opponent. That opponent would be the winner of the clash between the 4th seeded NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS and the top seeded defending champions – the UNIVERSITY OF CINCINATTI AT CLERMONT COUGARS. That game was knotted up at 2-2 in the 4th Inning but in the 5th the Cougars took a 4-2 lead and rode that score all the way to the win. Everett Osborne was the winning pitcher.

The battle for the USCAA crown was pretty much of an anticlimax after that exciting game. The Lynx went up 4-0 by the end of the 1st Inning, 5-0 after the 2nd and then led 9-2 after UC- Clermont scored their only runs in the 3rd. LU- Belleville then masterfully logged even more runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th Innings to take the title by a final score of FIFTEEN to TWO! Dylan Arvai got the win. * CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LYNX, THE 2014 CHAMPIONS OF USCAA BASEBALL! *
