FINAL TWO COLLEGE BASEBALL CHAMPIONS CROWNED FOR 2014

* NCAA DIVISION TWO *

Southern Indiana University Screaming EaglesCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Balladeer’s Blog’s college baseball coverage for 2014 came to a close with yesterday’s completion of the World Series in NCAA Division Two and the NJCAA Division Two. The UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN INDIANA SCREAMING EAGLES did battle with the COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY MAVERICKS for the title. The Screaming Eagles grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 1st Inning but the Mavericks went ahead 2-1 in the 3rd. That was all the scoring until another Southern Indiana run tied the score at 2-2 in the 8th Inning. Things remained knotted up at that score until the TWELFTH INNING, when USI scored the go- ahead run on – of all things – a bases- loaded walk. Matt Chavarria pitched the 3-2 victory. * CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SCREAMING EAGLES, THE 2014 CHAMPIONS OF D2 BASEBALL! *     Continue reading →

COLLEGE BASEBALL CHAMPIONS CROWNED IN THE NAIA PLUS NJCAA DIVISION ONE; WORLD SERIES PLAY CONTINUES IN D2 AND NJCAA2

* NAIA *

cumberland-logoCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The Cinderella 10 seeds – the CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS – made it all the way to the title game to take on the 2nd seeded LEWIS- CLARK STATE WARRIORS. Behind some impressive pitching by Anthony Gomez the Bulldogs ensured they would remain THE story in NAIA baseball throughout the offseason with another nation- shaking upset. Cumberland shut out the Warriors while slamming in 2 runs of their own in the 2nd Inning and 1 more in the 7th for a 3-0 victory and their program’s third- ever baseball crown. * CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BULLDOGS, THE 2014 CHAMPIONS OF NAIA BASEBALL! *

* NJCAA DIVISION ONE *

Iowa Western ReiversCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – When all the dust had settled in this year’s thrilling College World Series for the NJCAA Division One the last two teams standing were the IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS and the MIAMI DADE COLLEGE SHARKS. The Reivers came into the title game undefeated in this year’s Series play but the Sharks already had a loss to their name, so Miami Dade had to win just to force a second game in this Double- Elimination tournament. Iowa Western would have none of it, though, utterly swamping the Sharks SEVENTEEN to FIVE to take their third baseball championship in the last five years! Drake Robison pitched for the win. * CONGRATULATIONS TO THE REIVERS, THE 2014 CHAMPIONS OF NJCAA BASEBALL! *  Continue reading →

PULP HERO NORTHWEST SMITH: HIS FINAL STORY

Northwest Smith 3Balladeer’s Blog concludes its examination of another neglected pulp hero – in this case Northwest Smith. Created by the female author C.L. Moore in the 1930′s Northwest Smith was a ruthless outer-space smuggler and mercenary decades before Han Solo. With his Venusian partner Yarol at his side and armed with a trusty blaster Smith roamed our solar system in his deceptively fast spaceship The Maid. In the course of their criminal pursuits the two often found themselves in the role of reluctant heroes, sometimes with the fate of entire planets at stake. For more on Northwest Smith and other neglected pulp heroes click here: https://glitternight.com/pulp-heroes/

13. SONG IN A MINOR KEY – For this farewell vignette featuring Northwest Smith we get an oddly touching piece that enhances Smith’s character without ruining the mystery. He and Yarol are back on Earth to visit the spot where Northwest committed his first crime exactly 20 years earlier, setting his life on its present course. He reveals that Northwest Smith is not his real name (Well, duh!) and is uncharacteristically serious- minded as he soaks in the atmosphere of the woodland area where his fate was determined so long ago.   Continue reading →

HITTITE MYTHOLOGY: THE STORM GOD VERSUS THE SERPENT DEITY

Tarhun and his vizier Suwaliyut confronting Illuyanka

Tarhun and his vizier Suwaliyut confronting Illuyanka

The readers of Balladeer’s Blog have spoken! You want more Hittite mythology! I’m always responsive to my readers so I will now examine two different versions of the ancient myth about the Hittite storm god Tarhun battling the supreme serpent Illuyanka. Both versions tie in with the Purulli Festival.

VERSION ONE – Illuyanka, a miles- long serpent, emerges from his lair in the Netherworld (making him another ally and possible son of the god Kumarbi) and unleashes havoc and disorder. Tarhun the storm god clashes with Illuyanka in Kiskilussa and, unexpectedly, the serpent is triumphant. Illuyanka plucks out Tarhun’s eyes and his heart and leaves him to live blind and helpless (yes, even though he has no heart now). Continue reading →

GASYONDETHA: THE IROQUOIS METEOR GOD

meteor showerGASYONDETHA – The Iroquois meteor god. Like the war god Areskoi he tried to woo the goddess Iagentci when she was taking Marriage Bread to Hawenneyu, the Chief of the Iroquois deities. Gasyondetha was associated not just with meteors and comets blazing across the sky but also with ones that struck the earth in Iroquois territory. These fallen meteors were considered Gasyondetha’s teeth, which he would sometimes pluck out of his mouth as a show of fortitude and toss to the earth below.

Many unusual rock formations that were NOT really meteors were mistakenly believed to be fallen meteors by the Iroquois in ancient times. Some stones that were believed to be meteors were said to talk and were the source of ancient stories about the world and the gods in a myth about the origin of Iroquois historical and religious tales.

One of the most famous myths involving Gasyondetha involved the god visiting an Iroquois man- Svengedaigea – in a dream warning him about monsters coming to devour everyone in his village. Continue reading →
