SUN GIRL (1948-1950)

This weekend’s light-hearted, escapist superhero post from Balladeer’s Blog looks at Sun Girl, a Marvel character from back when the company was called Timely Comics.

SUN GIRL

Secret Identity: Mary Mitchell, secretary for the Daily Views newspaper

Origin: Never revealed. Her very first story made it apparent that she had already been active for years.

Powers: Sun Girl was much stronger than any adult male. She was extraordinarily skilled at unarmed combat and was more agile than an acrobat.

Sun Girl wielded a Sunbeam Ray Gun (also a Sunbeam Wristlet-Ray) which shot solar light and heat.

Her emergency pouch contained a “super-sensitized tracer” and the cable/ lariat which she used to swing around the city like Spider-Man or Daredevil.

Comment: Marvel still hasn’t clarified if Sun Girl was a human or was an alien using the name Mary Mitchell as an alias. I would have made it that she was a human granted her powers and weapons by the Master of the Sun, who decades later gave Peter Quill his powers and weapons to become Star-Lord.

SUN GIRL Vol 1 #1 (August 1948)

Title: Flying Fists and Glamour

Villains: Gangs of bank robbers

Synopsis: A gang of armed robbers arrive in their getaway car at their hideout with their latest robbery proceeds.

Sun Girl emerges from hiding and reveals that she was surreptitiously clinging to their vehicle.

Our heroine outfights and outshoots the entire gang and hauls them into a police station. Expository dialogue reveals this is the latest in a rash of bank robberies and Sun Girl vows to lure out the secret leader of the gangs.

That leader turns out to be the crooked police chief, and she takes down him and his underlings.    Continue reading

I WAS A TEENAGE TIME LORD

I WAS A TEENAGE TIME LORD – In the style of Tom Baker & Jon Pertwee Doctor Who episodes and vintage Golden Turkeys of the past with faint undertones of old movie host shows comes this self-indulgent blog post.

Back when I was 12 or 13 years old and was getting heavily into really old, bad movies I combined that interest with my fondness for schlocky original series Doctor Who episodes. The result was much younger me lazily picturing myself in the Big Bug, Cheap Monster and Goofy Alien films from the 1950s or 1960s and earlier.

I never pictured myself as a Teenage Time Lord exactly, I just used that title for this blog post to capture the feel of ridiculous 50s flicks like I Was a Teenage Werewolf, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and others.

My imaginary character wasn’t an alien from Gallifrey or anything, he was just from Earth of the future and wound up stranded in the past. His futuristic science kept him from aging, and he spent his time helping human beings battle weird menaces.

In other words, whatever actions the hero of the movie was involved in, my imaginary counterpart was really the one doing them, dressed in sunglasses, an Indiana Jones hat and a baggy three-quarter length coat. No TARDIS of course, just the surviving segment of the crashed time machine in which he had traveled to the past, which served as my/ his mobile lab.

Some of the Psychotronic movies in which I used to half-insert my fictional alter ego long, long ago:

FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER (1965) – This black & white film is on many people’s lists of the worst movies ever made, so it was a dream come true for young me. Martian women have been rendered sterile from the radiation of the planet’s nuclear war.

The Red Planet’s Princess Marcuzan, her chief scientist Nadir and some troops have come to Earth, where they abduct nubile women vacationing in Puerto Rico to use as breeding stock. The aliens are opposed by a heroic android astronaut called Frank, supposedly short for First Robot Astronaut Corps.

The half-melted android (after crashing his craft) battles the aliens to save Earth ladies, ultimately fighting the space monster the Martians brought with them. For a couple minutes, anyway.

Sounds like a comedy … stings like a bee! All that plus groovy rock songs, too, in this 79-minute schlocker. Continue reading

TOP GODS AND GODDESSES OF HITTITE MYTHS

It’s been awhile since Balladeer’s Blog visited Hittite myths so here we go.

Hittite empireThe Hittite Empire spread throughout Anatolia, covering a large part of what is now Turkey and Syria as well as some parts far eastward and southward of there (accounts vary). Some of the remains of the texts regarding the deities worshipped by the Hittites are tantalizingly fragmentary but reflect and/or influenced myths from Mesopotamia across the west to ancient Greece and south to Canaanite territory.

ARANZAH – The god of the body of water that bore his name – the Aranzah River. The Aranzah is better known as the Tigris, which begins its journey southward from the Taurus Mountains in what is now eastern Turkey. This deity was a brother of the storm god Tarhun (Teshub to the Hurrians) and like him was born in the belly of the god Kumarbi.

ISTUSTAYA and PAPAYA – The Hittite goddesses of destiny. The two deities sat by the shores of the Black Sea where they would spin the threads that are each mortal’s destiny, taking special care with the fates of kings. The two left their seaside location only for special occasions like conferences of all the gods. Collectively the two were called the Gulses by the Hittites and the Hutena by the Hurrians. The ancient Greeks added a third to their number and called them the Morae (Fates).    Continue reading

MARCH THIRTEENTH ROUNDUP OF NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS

Time for another current events roundup from Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog.

EXPOSING THE LIES THAT TRUMP WILL CUT MEDICARE AND/OR SOCIAL SECURITY. He never did it in his 1st term, either. Trump is the greatest president for the working class and the poor during my entire lifetime.

JOB OPENINGS ARE ON THE RISE AS THE LABOR MARKET STABILIZES. The term “the Trump Effect” is being bandied about again.

ONCE AGAIN, TRUMP HAS A “BLUE-COLLAR BOOM” STARTING. Remarkable.

JOE BIDEN’S FAKE OVAL OFFICE SET FOUND AND DISPLAYED. The one he often used but which Democrat media outlets claimed didn’t exist for some reason.

EGG PRICES ALREADY DROPPING UNDER PRESIDENT TRUMP. And only Democrats are upset about it. CNN POLL: TRUMP’S APPROVAL RATING ON HANDLING THE ECONOMY IS ALREADY ELEVEN PERCENT HIGHER THAN JOE BIDEN’S.

SENATOR TOM COTTON TAKES UP JAMES CARVILLE’S SUGGESTION MONTHS AGO TO TAX “WOKE” UNIVERSITIES’ MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR ENDOWMENTS. Such taxes would more than pay for Biden’s unconstitutional cancellation of so much student loan debt. Hypocritical Democrats, who usually LOVE new taxes, will, of course, object to this.

VETERANS AFFAIRS SECRETARY DOUG COLLINS SMACKS DOWN “REPORTER’S” LIES ABOUT DOGE LOOKING TO MAKE CUTS AT THAT DEPARTMENT. The lying corporate media in America needs to be called out like this more often.

IRELAND’S HEAD OF STATE PRAISES TRUMP’S PEACE PUSH BETWEEN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA.

ONTARIO BACKS DOWN ON THREAT TO OVERCHARGE THREE AMERICAN STATES FOR ELECTRICITY AFTER TRUMP FOUGHT BACK. Even the Democrats at NBC admit it HERE. And more HERE. And HERE.

YASSIN FAWAZ ON TRUMP’S ECONOMIC POLICIES AND HOW THEY COMBAT THE WAY OTHER NATIONS HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF AMERICA FOR DECADES. A similar view on tariffs, etc. HERE.

TRUMP’S ECONOMIC POLICIES ALREADY SLOWING INFLATION. More HERE. Continue reading

CAPTAIN MORS THE AIR PIRATE (1908-1911)

KAPITAN MORS DER LUFTPIRAT – From 1908 to 1911 the masked Captain Mors, a combination of Robin Hood, Captain Nemo and Robur, appeared in weekly adventures running 32-33 pages. The character’s creator is not known but over his 3-year run various writers were linked to this German series, which was basically a late Dime Novel but early Pulp Magazine.

The enigmatic Captain Mors has been called “the Patron Saint of Steam Punk” even though he was far from the first figure to be featured in that subgenre. His series ran for 165 issues of TEXT STORIES – this was not a comic book. Mors is up there with France’s hero the Nyctalope.

After the initial run of 3 years and a few months, the Captain Mors stories were reprinted around Europe in various languages until 1916. The good captain at first adventured in the skies above, then later took his crew to other planets aboard his “world ship” (which we today would call a spaceship) the Meteor.

Captain Mors’ origin is very derivative of Captain Nemo’s. Mors’ wife and children were killed by a German-Russian criminal organization which also forged documents to frame him for heinous crimes. He adopted the nom de guerre Captain Mors, donned a mask and set about using his Luftschiff (airship) and other futuristic inventions for revenge and then for crusading against other evildoers.

With his mixed crew of Europeans and people from India the captain flies around the world – and later the solar system – robbing from the rich to give to the poor and dispensing his own brand of justice to malefactors. Like the much later Doc Savage, Captain Mors possesses impressive physical strength as well as uncanny scientific genius. His archenemy is rival genius Ned Gully. Continue reading

NEWS, MEMES AND POLITICAL CARTOONS ROUNDUP: MARCH ELEVENTH

Independent Voter Site Balladeer’s Blog offers up another current events roundup from an America where Democrats support sending money to Ukraine only because they’re STILL getting millions kicked back to them by their criminal cohort Zelensky.

STATELY MCDANIEL MANOR BLOG DOES ANOTHER SERIES THAT KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK.

ARTICLE: TRUMP’S FIFTY DAYS AND FIFTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

PRESIDENT TRUMP GETS CMA CGM TO INVEST TWENTY BILLION DOLLARS IN THE U.S. When the crooked Joe Biden was in the White House it seemed like every major deal benefited him, his family or China, not the U.S.

DEMOCRAT MAYOR OF BOSTON ENDS POLICY OF ARRESTING DRUG DEALERS. Remember the chaos when the Democrats in California ended the prosecution of shoplifters based on a dollar amount? Boston has now outdone them. And I wonder if Boston’s mayor is so forgiving of people who “misgender” someone?

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION CUTS DEMOCRAT STUDY OF MENSTRUAL CYCLES IN TRANS MEN. More HERE. And HERE. Democrats are enemies of science and rational thought.

Democrat Party

DEMOCRAT DONOR WHO BASHES ELON MUSK PLEADS GUILTY IN INVESTMENT FRAUD SCHEME. Is anyone surprised?

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION REVOLUTIONIZES DISASTER AID FOR THE BETTER.

CHINA SAYS IT’S READY FOR WAR WITH THE U.S. I would imagine that Democrats’ only reply is “if we go to war with China it better not affect sending money to Ukraine or we’ll blame Trump!” Continue reading

CUBA’S SILENT MOVIES (1897-1907)

Balladeer’s Blog’s latest look at silent films covers Cuba’s early cinematic efforts.

FIRE DRILL aka Simulacro de Incendio (1897) – On January 24th of this year, Gabriel Veyre (at left) held the very first exhibition of silent film shorts in Cuban history at a theater in Havana.

Veyre was the Lumiere Film Company representative to Central America, and he parlayed the popular reaction to the Havana exhibition into financial support for Fire Drill, the first movie made in Cuba. That 1-minute film short from February 1897 was a documentary look at firefighting in Havana. Actual firefighters of the Central Fire Station of the City of Havana played themselves.

FILM COMMERCIAL FOR LA TROPICAL BEER aka the Missing Sorcerer (1898) – This was the very first film directed by a native Cuban – Jose Esteban Casasús, a noted pioneer of Cuban Cinema. Lasting just under a minute, this short advertised the brewery & product of La Tropical beer and was produced by Cinemataca de Cuba.

CONSTITUTIONAL ASSEMBLY (1901) – A film capturing the 1901 assembly, the equivalent of our Constitutional Convention. Following the defeat of Spain in the Spanish-American War, Cuba produced its first constitution a few years later. That document was openly based on the United States Constitution but had 115 articles instead of America’s 7.

The three branches were Executive, Legislative (bicameral) and judicial. Cuban presidents were to be elected for terms of 4 years, while Senators were elected for an initial term of 8 years, following which they could run for additional terms of 4 years each. The lower house members were elected for an initial term of 4 years, following which they could run for additional terms of 2 years each.  Continue reading

HAS TO BE SAID: MARCH TENTH

Here at Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog it’s time for another installment of “Has to be Said.”

*** LET’S CUT THROUGH THE POLITICAL THEATER – The European politicians talking tough about standing with Ukraine are just voguing for attention. We’ve all seen the wording in their agreements that none of them will take any action unless the U.S. is on board with it and pays for it.

The ONLY reason they’re making such a public display of their hollow theatrics is for petty ankle-biting at the United States, a country that HAS ALREADY PROVIDED FAR MORE SUPPORT TO UKRAINE THAN ANY OF THEM HAVE OR APPARENTLY WILL BE ABLE TO.

Yes, the United States has provided far more support to Ukraine in its war against Russia’s Biden-caused invasion (remember Joe’s statement that ” a small incursion” would be acceptable) yet countries and people who have done virtually nothing much beyond rah-rah-ing Ukraine act outraged if America expresses any say in how badly Little Man Zelensky handles situations. (Remember, even BIDEN lost patience with the grotesque little toad Zelensky and his ingratitude.)

*** ZELENSKY STILL CAN’T ACCOUNT FOR ABOUT HALF OF THE FUNDS SENT TO HIS CORRUPT REGIME. And he knows that any kind of cease fire while negotiations continue could provide time to investigate where all the lost money went. Into Zelensky’s pockets? Into the pockets of his lackeys as Ukrainians continue to die under his mismanagement of the war?

*** DEMOCRATS PRETEND TO BE ALL-IN FOR UKRAINE SIMPLY AS A MEANS OF ATTACKING PRESIDENT TRUMP. Democrats pretend the only way to support Ukraine is to mindlessly support the crooked failure Zelensky. Ukraine is NOT equivalent to one person. The pathetic, cosplaying little man Zelensky is a corrupt authoritarian.

Little Man Z has proven he cannot be trusted. If a new Ukrainian leader comes in, even if they support the same war policy as Zelensky they would at least be TRUSTWORTHY. Crooked Z is not.

*** ZELENSKY CHICKENHAWKS AND DEMOCRATS WHO SUPPORT ZELENSKY ALSO SUPPORT HAMAS. Obviously, peace and innocent lives are not at all a priority for such people. They encourage “fighting to the last dead Ukrainian.” Hey, whatever happened to that “if it saves even one life” talking point Democrats love to use? How about “If a cease fire between Russia and Ukraine saves even one life isn’t it worth trying?”

But we all know that Democrats never really mean it when they use that “if it saves even one life” remark. Although, given how the UK and US have been negotiating with Ukraine about rare earth minerals, the MINUTE that Democrats want to sell out Ukraine they will insist America withdraw support and use “No more blood for rare earth minerals” as one of their chants, I’m sure.
