There aren’t any, of course. Only savages still behead people here in the 21st Century. If you were foolish enough to think there would be you are Ben Affleck- level stupid. Either that or you’re one of those cowardly enablers of Muslim violence who pretend that you think Christians, Jews, Buddhists etc are “just as violent as Muslims are” here in the 21st Century. And remember, I’m a non-believer, so don’t waste my time trying to accuse me of being Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Wiccan, etc.

LA MALROCHE (1833) – By Louisa Stuart Costello. Halloween month continues here at Balladeer’s Blog with yet another look at a neglected work of Gothic Horror, this one dealing with witchcraft, a monstrous child and supernatural beasts. Louisa Costello, the female author of this eerie tale, deserves to be much better known.
La Malroche refers to a mountain in a dreaded and generally avoided area of 1830’s France. At the foot of that mountain is the town of Escures, where only people too poor to have fled the area still live. Also near the foot of La Malroche is the home of the witch called La Bonne Femme (“The Good Woman”) by the local citizenry, a title bestowed on her out of fear rather than merit. Continue reading

SPIRIT OF NINETY-ONE – The NAIA’s 14th ranked LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS welcomed the BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY BLAZERS yesterday and treated their guests like they might as well have stayed at home. Head Coach Chris Oliver had his team red-hot on both sides of the ball as the Blue Raiders scored 10 offensive TD’s and THREE defensive TD’s. Lindsey Wilson led 63-7 at Halftime on their way to an unbelievable NINETY-ONE to FOURTEEN final score. The Blue Raiders were just 9 points short of the Century Club Award that Balladeer’s Blog hands out to BASKETBALL teams that hit 100 or better!
A PAIR OF NUMBER TWO’s FALL – In the NAIA the 20th ranked MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS toppled the number 2 team in the nation – the BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS. It took Overtime but the Pioneers won 34-27 on Homecoming! ### And in the NCAA Division Two the 2nd ranked HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY REDDIES were stunned in their own house, falling to the unranked HARDING UNIVERSITY BISON in a 28-24 Instant Classic.
ZOMBIES OF MONTICELLO (2013) – Halloween month continues at Balladeer’s Blog with this review of cult director Eddie Wozniak’s blood-soaked combination of horror and commentary.
Learn the REAL cause of Thomas Jefferson’s death on July 4th, 1826! On the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence the zombified corpses of all of Jefferson’s dead slaves rise from their graves and besiege him and his extended family in the Jefferson mansion at Monticello!
The pompous hypocrite who penned noble words about freedom and equality while OWNING other human beings tries everything to wipe out the undead legions pressing in on all sides. Continue reading
Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the neglected Pulp Hero G-8. This is a story-by- story look at the adventures of this World War One American fighter pilot who – along with his two wingmen the Battle Aces – took on various supernatural and super- scientific menaces thrown at the Allied Powers by the Central Powers of Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Muslim Turks.
G-8 was created by Robert J Hogan in 1933 when World War One was still being called simply the World War or the Great War. Over the next eleven years Hogan wrote 110 stories featuring the adventures of G-8, the street-smart pug Nippy Weston and the brawny giant Bull Martin. The regular cast was rounded out by our hero’s archenemy Doktor Krueger, by Battle, G-8’s British manservant and by our hero’s girlfriend R-1: an American spy/ nurse whose real name, like G-8’s was never revealed.
58. FANGS OF THE SERPENT (July 1938) – Introducing the German intelligence agent known only by the codename the Serpent. Kaiser Wilhelm himself gives the Serpent his latest mission: to destroy G-8 and his Battle Aces. A-1, Hogan’s fictional head of American Intelligence, personally warns our hero about this new adversary’s abilities.
The Serpent, like plenty of other G-8 villains, sports a memorable disfigurement. In his case a twisted spine from which he gets his codename and his distorted posture. That would be a detriment to his career as a spy if not for the fact that his real strength lies in his supernatural mastery of the art of hypnosis. Continue reading
THE DEVIL’S ELIXIRS – By E.T.A. Hoffmann. Halloween month continues at Balladeer’s Blog with a look at another neglected work of Gothic Horror. As I’ve mentioned in the past, horror stories from back then that feature supernatural menaces OTHER than vampires and ghosts hold a special appeal to me. The Devil’s Elixirs features a doppleganger.
Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog will remember I’m a big fan of Hoffmann’s macabre stories and have even reviewed Offenbach’s opera Tales of Hoffmann, based on various short stories of the Austrian writer. The central character of the novel is Medardus, a Capuchin monk. Continue reading
Balladeer’s Blog presents another examination of an ancient Greek comedy. Callippides was written by the comedian Strattis and falls into that comic poet’s specialized area: Parathespian Comedies.
Another fun element of our shared humanity with the ancient Athenians who flocked to attend these plays is the fact that even 2,400 years ago audiences were fascinated and entertained by the trappings of “showbiz”. “Parathespian Comedies” were just one of the many sub-genres of ancient Greek comedy but Strattis is the writer most associated with them … by me and the .000001 percent of the population who are into such things.
Yes, a few thousand years before I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Seinfeld and other such sitcoms the spectators at the Theatre of Dionysus were laughing at comedies depicting what it was like to be one of the performing, writing and singing stars of the Athenian stage. The Parathespian Comedies sometimes featured fictional stars as the characters but would also depict real-life figures of the stage in stories that were either wholly fictional or based on backstage gossip of the time.
Callippides was based on the real-life actor and megastar of ancient Greek tragedies. In this particular case Strattis presented a very unflattering comedic poke at Callippides, making jokes that depicted him as a William Shatner-esque ham instead of the accomplished thespian he was often hailed as. Oh, yeah … Muslim savages. Three-month old Chaya Zissel Braun, an American citizen, was killed by a Muslim terrorist in Jerusalem in a vehicular attack that wounded several other people. The deed was proudly trumpeted by HAMAS spokesman and alleged human being Hossam Badran, who said “This is a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and invasion of our land by the Jews.”
Badran was not asked what exactly Chaya Braun had done that implicated her in any alleged “crimes”. HAMAS is one of the sub-groups who fall under the worldwide umbrella of I.S.L.A.M. (Intolerant Savages Loathing All Modernity).
In keeping with the kind of savagery endorsed by HAMAS, Palestinians bombarded a Jewish kindergarten with rocks today. Children are the frequent targets of Muslim fanatics, who are not capable of any creative acts and who understand nothing but killing and more killing.
This incident is one that puts people in three groups: Continue reading
FREDDY’S NIGHTMARES (1988 – 1990) – With Halloween just over a week away what better time to examine this forgotten series! I’ve always been a Freddy Krueger over Jason Voorhees kind of guy. I found Voorhees a dull imitation of Michael Myers from the Halloween movies, plus it isn’t even Voorhees doing the killing in at least two of the Friday the Thirteenth films. Throw in a mention that the boring as hell slice and dice man didn’t even don his iconic hockey mask until the third movie. Now add the fact that no matter how bad some of the Nightmare on Elm Street sequels were NONE of them were as lame as so many of the FT13 flicks.
I always thought the Continue reading
Do spineless, groveling apologists for Islam ever get tired of trying to defend the most intolerant religion in the world at this particular point in history?
To Muslim fanatics tolerance is a one-way street. They expect to be able to take their homophobia, misogyny and savage superstitions with them everywhere they go and demand that their host countries adapt to all of their own built-in hatreds rather than adapt to the 21st Century. Most repulsive is Islam’s insistence on carrying its treatment of women – slavery in other words – everywhere it spreads.
American Liberals are cowardly hypocrites because they would NEVER accept that from people migrating from Christian or Jewish nations but they twist logic as severely as they have to to side with hate-filled Islam. American Liberals are no doubt already preparing their excuses for the Muslims opening fire on the Canadian Parliament on the day they are considering honorary citizenship for Malala Yousafazi. One soldier is reported dead and one of the Muslim attackers was also supposedly slain.
Not content to just shoot Yousafazi when she was fifteen for advocating educating women and letting them vote, I.S.L.A.M. (Intolerant Savages Loathing All Modernity) had to perpetrate additional outrages. All they know how to do is kill and kill and kill. Continue reading
