WITH THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION IN SYRIA (1928)

french foreign legion in syriaWITH THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION IN SYRIA (1928) – Written by a British former member of the French Foreign Legion using the alias John Harvey. Previously, Balladeer’s Blog examined the excellent 1895 short story collection titled Garrison Tales From Tonquin (Tonkin), a fascinatingly ahead of its time look at the French Foreign Legion in Vietnam during and after the Sino-French War. American James O’Neill wrote those powerful stories based on his own experiences in the Legion during the 1880s and 1890s.

This John Harvey work is nowhere near as literary as O’Neill’s forgotten writing. Harvey was a deserter who presents a fairly self-serving account of his time in the French Foreign Legion, largely depicting himself as a victim fooled into enlisting based on false promises by the recruiter. He doesn’t deal with larger issues the way O’Neill did.

rashayaJohn Harvey’s With The French Foreign Legion In Syria instead wallows in the tawdry and brutal side of the Legion. Instead of James O’Neill’s poetic, astonishingly prescient tales, this volume presents an ugly and sensationalistic take on the FFL. It would have stood in stark contrast to stories romanticizing the Legion as written by P.C. Wren and others. No movies of the time would have touched these violent, vulgar Peckinpah-style antics. Get ready for a look at some Legionnaires who would make The Wild Bunch look genteel.

Harvey provided a very readable, albeit bleak, account of the FFL’s First Cavalry Regiment, or 1er REC. That cavalry unit was headquartered at Sousse in Tunisia, rather than in Algeria, like most other French Foreign Legion units in North Africa. That provides an element of novelty for readers of Legion history, as does the Syrian setting during the Revolt of 1925-1927. Continue reading

SEVEN BURIED TREASURES THAT HAVE YET TO BE FOUND

masc graveyard smallerBalladeer’s Blog takes a look at several buried treasures which legends maintain may still be out there for the finding.

***

MONTEZUMA’S CARAVAN

Estimated Value: $52,000,000.00 in 2021 terms.

Last Seen: 1520 A.D.

Lore: Observing how the Spanish were stealing every bit of treasure they found, Aztec ruler Montezuma had his treasury and temples stripped of as much gold, silver and jewels as possible. He intended to have it sent northward and buried until the Spanish could be driven out of the New World. Over time everyone who knew where the horde was located died.

Potential Locations: Arizona, New Mexico or Utah.

THE GOLD OF REMY LEDOUX

Estimated Value: As high as $208,000,000.00 in 2021 terms.

Last Seen: Late 1780s-1790s

Lore: In the 1780s French fur traders led by one Remy Ledoux heard about rich veins of gold from some free-spending and loose-talking Spaniards. The fur traders checked out the location indicated and came across their own finds, which they worked for years.

Amid growing hostility with Spanish prospectors and Native Americans in the area, Remy and his colleagues buried the gold in anywhere from 1 to 3 locations and headed back to civilization until tempers near their gold veins could cool. They suffered more Native American attacks and only Ledoux made it back east alive. The map he left behind has proven to be either incredibly wrong or coded.

Potential Location: The San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Continue reading

EXPLAINING LIZ CHENEY FOR OVERSEAS READERS

mascot donkey and republican headsOverseas readers have been asking me about the Liz Cheney situation in Congress. Since Balladeer’s Blog is an Independent Voter site I’ve always made it clear I would be fine if both the Democrats and Republicans splintered into multiple smaller parties because neither one represents the needs of their constituents at this time. That’s why people know they will get a response from me that is NOT motivated by political party bias.

I would love to be able to describe the situation without having to discuss the Donald Trump angle, but our insane media loves to pump up ratings by making EVERYTHING about Trump, so there is no way around it. Links to news items regarding the following remarks are presented below.

To begin with, Liz Cheney is political garbage from the Republican Party. Her father is THE Dick Cheney, Vice President under the repulsive and disastrous George W Bush. (Remember the much lauded movie Vice? That’s her “daddy.”) Her father’s conflicts of interest and blood-soaked ways of making money off the still-going Middle East conflict that the Bush-Cheney Administration LIED THE COUNTRY INTO are still relevant.

LIZ CHENEY REPRESENTS EVERYTHING AND EVERY POLICY THAT THE REST OF THE WORLD CONDEMNED AMERICA FOR OVER THE COURSE OF NEARLY A DECADE. She and her family are part of the obscenely corrupt and callous Bush Family wing of the Republican Party. The wing of open-ended warfare, of looking for new countries to invade, of contempt for the working class and the poor and so many other abuses.

The Cheney-Bush Republicans have been feuding with Donald Trump over the years for a number of reasons, INCLUDING the way that Trump kept Jeb Bush out of the White House in 2016. The horrific Bush-Cheney wing felt Jeb Bush, part of one of the most corrupt and harmful political families in history, “deserved” the presidency. There is no need to choose sides in this, of course, but don’t believe the way that the Democrats’ media outlets are depicting Liz Cheney like she cares about anything except putting the disgusting Cheney-Bush Republicans back in the driver’s seat.

democrat republican or awakeAnd remember, even if you hate Donald Trump, another reason the Cheney-Bush Warmongers opposed him is because HE KEPT THE U.S. OUT OF ANY NEW WARS. Even the most anti-Trump media outlets in the U.S. are often willing to concede that point. AND SINCE THE CHENEY-BUSH WING OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WANTS ALL-WAR, ALL THE TIME, WITH VAGUE OBJECTIVES THAT THEY CAN ALWAYS CLAIM HAVEN’T BEEN MET YET, THAT IS WHY LIZ CHENEY AND HER ILK BASH TRUMP. If you back her, you’re backing open-ended warfare, among other things.

Our country’s Democrat Media outlets are, of course, painting Liz as “the good guy” because they are still motivated by their bizarre and obsessive anti-Trump hysteria AND because, as anyone can understand, the more in-fighting among Republicans, the more that helps the Democrats. Any political party’s media outlets would encourage in-fighting among their opponents.

A bigger problem comes in with the way America’s notoriously dishonest and shallow media reflexively canonizes ANYONE who criticizes Trump. That is why we have seen some of the ugliest political grifters in decades get lionized by the media if they bash Trump, and all the facts get ignored in the mad rush to side with them.

Even if you really, really hate Donald Trump, we have had several years now to see that reactionary anti-Trump hysteria prompts some people to instantly revere some horrible people. Look at Governor Andrew Cuomo’s now-exposed coverup of his negligent slayings of the elderly in New York elder-care facilities AND of his repeated sexual assaults. Just because he and Trump were in public disagreement, the disgusting Cuomo was being hailed for his (now revealed as lies) “press briefings” on Covid. Democrats even gave him an Emmy for them before the truth came out, remember?

For additional reminders of the way our irrational and dementedly partisan media acts like “disagreement with Trump washes away all crimes and sins”:

mccain warmonger*** John McCain, the racist Republican warmonger who did more than anyone else to try to stop America from having its first African-American president, was, of course, LATER treated like a statesman by the Democrats’ media outlets because he feuded with Trump. Hell, if you have a short memory or were too young to have noticed it, John McCain was, once upon a time being likened to Hitler, etc. For just one small (and light-hearted) example, you can still see Family Guy reruns like the one depicting the time-traveling Stewie and Brian encountering Nazis in the World War Two era wearing John McCain buttons. (The cartoon dates from around when McCain and Sarah Palin were running for president and vice president in real life.) Continue reading

AMERICAN TELEVISION: 1940

mascot chair and bottle picBalladeer’s Blog’s recurring feature Forgotten Television goes way back this time around with a look at the state of the new broadcasting technology in 1940. Great Britain and the Soviet Union had been making as many, if not more, milestone achievements in tv programming through 1939. However, World War Two brought an end to BBC television broadcasting at 12:35PM on September 1st of that year. The Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey’s Gala Premier was the last item broadcast via television in the U.K. until 1946, when the BBC resumed programming with that very same cartoon.

The United States, of course, did not enter the war until December of 1941, and with Great Britain and the Soviet Union preoccupied with the raging conflict, America took center stage in the future of television broadcasting.

*** 1940 ***

1940 television setJANUARY – The FCC holds hearings on potentially licensing television broadcasting. It will not finalize its actions until April 30th of 1941, but in the meantime stations around the country continue pioneering tv programming.

FEBRUARY 21st – A simulcast of NBC News With Lowell Thomas debuts, televising Thomas’ daily radio news program on Station W2XBS in New York. The tv side of the simulcast would only last until July 30th.

FOOL KILLER FIFTY-FIVE: APRIL 1912

Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the many facets of Fool Killer lore. FOR PART ONE, INCLUDING THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT IN THE 1850s, CLICK HERE

Fool Killer with staff and Bowie knifePART FIFTY-FIVE – Here is a look at some of the Fool Killer’s targets in the April of 1912 edition of James Larkin Pearson’s version of the character:

*** The Steel Trust – Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, John Rockefeller and other “Big Ikes of the Steel Trust”, as Pearson and his Fool Killer called them. The bloated rich pigs were in the news again because – just like today’s corporate rich pigs at Google, Facebook, Twitter and others they were being called out on their prejudiced behavior and their contempt for the notion that Congress or the Stanley Committee or anyone else could hold them accountable.

They had recently boasted that they were above nations because without their steel the U.S. and some other countries could not wage war or engage in engineering & construction projects or build cargo ships, railroads, etc. Whistleblowers at the steel companies had recently made public statements about the ways the Steel Trust collaborated to control steel prices, EXCLUDE COMPETITION and undertake other acts in violation of Anti-Trust laws at what they called “Gary Dinners.” Testimony from 55 figures had already been heard.

Another way they were just as disgusting as today’s Big Tech/ Technofascists was the way that untold numbers of SUBPOENAED DOCUMENTS HAD BEEN DESTROYED BY THE CORPORATIONS INVOLVED (like privileged white one-percenter Hillary Clinton flagrantly destroyed so much of the evidence against her). Those documents allegedly contained proof that Steel Trust figures had not only violated the law but had committed perjury in their courtroom testimony. Corporate fascists like Jack Dorsey, Mark Zuckerberg and others seem to slither the same way no matter the time period.

Fool Killer Red*** Judges and other high officials who betrayed their public trusts. He favored the recall process for judges as well as others.

*** Tobacco companies plus tobacco users like smokers and snuff-chewers. Continue reading

FOOL KILLER FIFTY-FOUR: MARCH 1912

Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the many facets of Fool Killer lore. FOR PART ONE, INCLUDING THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT IN THE 1850s, CLICK HERE

Fool Killer wardrobePART FIFTY-FOUR – There was no February issue of James Larkin Pearson’s version of The Fool-Killer in 1912, so we resume with the March issue, put together with Pearson’s new printing machinery. The Fool Killer’s targets this time around included:

*** Lawyers and politicians who felt constrained by legal precedents. Pearson and his Fool Killer called for dismantling the current system and starting fresh. Yet, once again, we will see below that he also had astonishingly regressive attitudes. The contradictions are part of the fascination.

*** North Carolina politicians and law enforcement personnel who, despite the state having Prohibition, secretly indulged in drinking alcohol and/or turned a blind eye to speakeasies and bootlegging. NOTE: Prohibition was not a nationwide policy yet. “Dry” states forbade the sell of booze while “Wet” states still had legal drinking.

*** People who chewed tobacco. Pearson had a big thing against chewers and smokers.

*** Lawyers and the legal system, which he wanted overhauled.

*** Meat packers and meat retailers, who were blaming each other for the inflated prices of meat products. Continue reading

FOOL KILLER FIFTY-THREE: JANUARY 1912

Fool Killer grayBalladeer’s Blog continues its examination of the many facets of Fool Killer lore. FOR PART ONE, INCLUDING THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT IN THE 1850s, CLICK HERE

PART FIFTY-THREE – Some of the targets from the January of 1912 edition of James Larkin Pearson’s version of The Fool-Killer:

*** With Christmas just past, the Fool Killer targeted community Christmas events which distributed toys to the children of well-to-do “pillars of the community” families while shutting out poor and needy children.

*** The way too many charitable events wound up being so extravagant that very little was left over for the poor. He cited a particular North Carolina event which, when expenses were paid, only $10.00 was left for the needy.

los angeles times bombing*** J.B. McNamara and J.J. McNamara, who had pleaded guilty in December 1911 to the bombing of the Los Angeles Times building on October 1st of 1910. Clarence Darrow, the famed defense attorney, represented the men but was blamed for mishandling the situation.

Pearson and his Fool Killer also bashed the witch hunt that this case unleashed on organized labor since the McNamaras were tied to the Iron Workers Union strike in Los Angeles.

FIVE NATURAL DISASTERS THAT STRUCK AMERICA (1811-1937)

masc graveyard smallerBalladeer’s Blog takes a look at some devastating natural disasters that hit the United States so long ago that some of them have been nearly forgotten.

HIGH MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKES IN THE MIDDLE UNITED STATES

Dates: December 16th, 1811 … January 23rd, 1812 and February 7th, 1812

Location: Sparsely inhabited sections of Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio

The Events: In New Madrid, MO, residents were literally shaken from their beds by the earthquake at roughly 2:00AM on December 16th. Virtually none of them had ever experienced an earthquake before, but had heard Shawnee legends about one of their gods “stamping their feet hard enough to rend the ground asunder.”

A million-square mile area shook intensely on that day as well as January 23rd and February 7th, 1812. Cincinnati, OH, Louisville, KY and Saint Louis, MO reported falling chimneys and shattered windows. Across multiple states the ground rose and fell, with sinks and ridges forming and trees ripped in two. Continue reading

THE IRISH WILD GEESE

irish flagThough purists reserve the label Wild Geese strictly for those Irish Jacobin troops who left Ireland after the Williamite War ended in 1691, romantic military tradition has tended to consider almost all Irish expatriates who served in overseas armies from the 1580s into the 1800s and beyond as part of “the flight of the Wild Geese.”

The popular image of these wandering Irish warriors is of tragic exiles nobly fighting for the cause of freedom “in every land but their own” to twist the most famous poem about the Wild Geese. Their opponents in various conflicts would dispute that claim, naturally, but since this is Saint Patrick’s Day we’ll have none of that in this blog post.

EIGHTY YEARS WAR – In 1585 an English Catholic named William Stanley raised an Irish Regiment to serve on the Continent with Queen Elizabeth’s forces. Stanley selected his 1,400 troops from the most volatile, hard-bitten Irish rebels whose battle prowess he admired even though he had fought against them only a few years earlier. The Irish Regiment under Stanley helped take Doesborg in August of 1586 and Deventer in October of that year. Continue reading
