COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS: DAY 3 RECAP

jamestown college jimmiesNORTH STAR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION – There was only one game in this league’s tournament yesterday and it pitted the top seeded UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES against the 6 seeds, the CITY VALLEY STATE VIKINGS. The Jimmies were in control for the entire game and by Halftime had compiled a 48-31 lead. After the break UJ coasted to a 94-65 victory and moved on to the next round. Brequan Tucker’s 17 points led the Jimmies.

Montreat Cavaliers logoAPPALACHIAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – The 9th seeded MONTREAT COLLEGE CAVALIERS upset the number 8 seeds, the SAINT ANDREWS UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS, in an Opening Round game. The Cavaliers were chasing the Knights the bulk of the game, trailing them 26-20 after a defensive-minded 1st Half. After the break it was more of the same until a 9-3 run to close out Regulation let Montreat tie the game at 61-61. In Overtime the Cavaliers emerged with a 75-68 triumph. COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS CONTINUE

Sun Conference logoThe Sun Conference tipped off their post-season tournament yesterday, joining the hardcourt action in the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog. Here are recaps of the Opening Round games: 

Webber International Warriors logoThe 8th seeded WEBBER INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WARRIORS hosted the number 9 seeds – the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES in a game that went from being a tight classic to a comfortable win late. The Warriors overcame an early Gyrene lead to hold an 18-12 advantage with 10 minutes to play in the 1st Half. By the break Ave Maria had trimmed that to a 37-33 edge for Webber International. Late in the 2nd Half the Warriors led the Gyrenes 63-41 and coasted from there to a 71-59 victory. Brian Pace led WIU with 23 points.   Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS HAVE BEGUN IN THE NAIA

Chicagoland CollegiateThe NAIA’s February Frenzy of conference tournament games got underway last night and as always the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference started things off.

Holy Cross College (IN)The HOLY CROSS COLLEGE SAINTS did battle with the visiting TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS and after a hard-fought opening 20 minutes, held a slim 35-32 lead at Halftime. In the 2nd Half the Saints fell behind by a score of 47-44 but runs of 9-0 and 7-0 allowed them to retake the lead and get separation for their 78-65 win. Drew Moore, Karl Columbus and Darrell McIntyre had 27, 18 and 15 points respectively for Holy Cross.   Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL RESULTS

green_terror_mascotUPSET IN THE TOP TEN – The MCDANIEL COLLEGE GREEN TERROR had the Gill Center rocking on Saturday as they toppled the number 10 team in the nation – the FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE DIPLOMATS. The Green Terror had the visiting Diplomats worried by Halftime, at which point the score was knotted up at 28-28. The 2nd Half remained a defensive epic and in the end McDaniel prevailed in a tight 59-58 stunner. Cameron Royster led the Green Terror in scoring with his 17 points.  

bethel pilots NEWCENTURY CLUB – NAIA – The Century Club is reserved each week for teams scoring 100 or more points in Regulation. The BETHEL (IN) COLLEGE PILOTS (Riverboat Pilots) welcomed the MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE UNIVERSITY COUGARS and trailed at the break by a score of 42-39. In the 2nd Half the Pilots seized control of the game, outscoring the Cougars 65-36 on their way to a 104-78 blowout victory. Bethel improves to 17-3 with the win.   Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL RESULTS

Indiana East Red WolvesOVERTIME EPIC IN RED – The INDIANA UNIVERSITY EAST RED WOLVES welcomed the UNIVERSITY OF RIO GRANDE RED STORM yesterday in what turned out to be one of the best games of the day. The Red Wolves trailed the Red Storm 46-35 at the end of a very explosive 1st Half but outscored their guests 44-33 in the 2nd to end Regulation in a 79-79 tie. In Overtime IU-East seized control and won by a final score of 95-85. Huston Clark led the Red Wolves with 21 points.

cornerstoneCENTURY CLUB – As always the Century Club is for teams reaching 100 points or more during Regulation: the CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY GOLDEN EAGLES not only put up 101 points but were equally excellent on the Defensive side of the ball, holding the MARYGROVE COLLEGE MUSTANGS to a mere 58 points. Cornerstone University’s Kyle Steigenga led the Golden Eagles with his 26 points in this 101-58 rout.   Continue reading

NAIA COLLEGE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS FOR 2014: THE VANGUARD UNIVERSITY LIONS

Vanguard U LionsLast night saw the championship game in Division One of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Two Lion prides did battle for the title as the 6th seeded VANGUARD UNIVERSITY LIONS took on the 8th seeded EMMANUEL COLLEGE LIONS. The opening Half was a tale of smothering defense from both teams. A 6-0 Vanguard lead became a 7-6 Emmanuel lead which turned into an 11-9 Vanguard advantage and so it went. The teams kept exchanging leads culminating in a 29-25 Halftime edge for VU.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: NAIA FINAL FOUR ACTION FROM LAST NIGHT

Vanguard U LionsFINAL FOUR: GAME ONE – The 6th seeded VANGUARD UNIVERSITY LIONS were playing in their first-ever Final Four matchup and will next be making their very first appearance in the NAIA National Championship Game! Last night the Lions took the court against the unseeded SAINT GREGORY’S UNIVERSITY CAVALIERS and led by a score of 25-16 before the Cavs cut that to a 28-26 advantage. That became a 37-28 Lion lead before SGU came fighting back again, making it a 44-41 game with 2:21 until Halftime. By the time the buzzer sounded Vanguard had stretched out their lead again – this time to 53-43.

After the break the Lions began to assert themselves and put more and more distance between themselves and the Cavaliers. A 75-58 Vanguard advantage ended as a Century Club-level 108-88 semifinal victory for VU. Preston Wynne logged FORTY-TWO POINTS himself to lead the Lions. * THE VANGUARD UNIVERSITY LIONS WILL PLAY IN TUESDAY NIGHT’S CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!
