GALLUP POLL: RECORD NUMBER OF AMERICANS NOW REJECT PARTY LABELS

Two fools who prove that ANYBODY can get reelected and it doesn't prove they are competent.

Two fools who prove that ANYBODY can get reelected and it doesn’t prove they are competent.

It’s no secret that the Democratic and Republican Parties are nothing more than two rival gangs of white collar criminals. This is what has been driving so many Americans to reject either party label and to proclaim themselves Independent voters. Even the latest Gallup Poll has caught up with this reality.

The number of respondents defining themselves as Independent grew to 46% in the final quarter of 2013 but averaged 42% for all of that calendar year. The Gallup analysts elaborated on the obvious by saying that these results reflected “an outgrowth of Americans’ record or near-record negative views of the two major U.S. parties” and their “low level of trust in government more generally.”

The analysts optimistically concluded that Continue reading →

BETTING ON WHO NEXT YEAR’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS WILL BE?

puck1The college football season is behind us now until August when the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog kick off their seasons. I’ve been getting a lot of emails asking me to predict next year’s champions given my blog’s reputation for predicting the ascension of various college football teams over the past few years. Yes it may be true that in 2010 I predicted a national championship for the Marian University Knights by 2015 (they won the title in 2012) and I accurately foresaw the 2013 playoff run for the Tabor College Blue Jays at the end of the 2012 season.

That type of Continue reading →

THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL INDEPENDENT MOVIES OF 2013

With the calendar year 2013 firmly in the books Balladeer’s Blog takes this opportunity to examine the six most controversial indy flicks from the preceding twelve months.

The Burqa: A heroic woman fighting Muslim Apartheid and defending women's rights.

The Burqa: A heroic woman fighting Muslim Apartheid and defending women’s rights.

THE BURQA –  This movie far and away deserves the top spot. The Burqa boasts the most explosive premise of any of the films on this list and plays like a combination of Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi trilogy, Spaghetti Westerns and post-apocalypse actioners like The Road Warrior. The main character is a mysterious gun-wielding Muslim woman who calls herself the Burqa for the garment that Muslim fundamentalists insist women wear. The cloaked heroine travels battle-scarred Iraq blowing away Islamists who oppress women physically or intellectually. Mascot with demo and repub headsTO THE FOURTH POWER – A mock documentary that deals with the way in which the Democratic and Republican Parties have become little more than rival gangs of white collar criminals whose elected officals represent their party’s interests and not the interests of the people who elected them. The mockumentary starts with fictional depictions of Continue reading →

Comment: The motto of this excellent institution is “Don’t just plan your future … begin your future!” Their secondary motto should be “Don’t call your sports teams something boring like Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs or Wildcats … call them something cool like Voyageurs!” Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog are familiar with the Continue reading →

NEW YEAR’S EVE BAD MOVIES FROM BALLADEER’S BLOG

Here at Balladeer’s Blog I’m very fond of cinematic turkeys that have seasonal tie-ins. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas bombs have gotten ample attention from me, so permit me to follow those items up with this look at bad movies with a New Year’s Eve theme. As usual, full-length reviews of these films can be found on my Bad Movie page.

AKA Time Warp

AKA Time Warp

BLOODY NEW YEAR (1987) – Also released under the title Time Warp but it’s grisly enough for the more explicit title. A handful of British boaters who are fleeing a family of soccer hooligans (no, really) wind up on an island with a deserted hotel that’s been decorated for a New Year’s Eve party since the 1950’s. This Norman J Warren film stars nobody and borrows heavily from Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead in terms of its imitation “Deadites” and its POV tracking shots. It also features a killer who emerges from a movie being watched, a monster who climbs out of a tablecloth, homicidal kitchen utensils, indoor snowfall, laughing shrubbery and living walls. All the chaos is being caused by hapless souls who have been trapped in limbo for decades and will do anything to get out or to drag others into their hellish undead existence with them.

Bloody New Year is a neglected bad movie classic that has all the Continue reading →

COLLEGE BASKETBALL RESULTS FROM DECEMBER 28th, 2013

Stevens Point Pointers logo1NUMBER ONE CONTINUES TO ROLL – The top-ranked team in the nation, the UW-STEVENS POINT POINTERS faced a dire threat yesterday from the WHITWORTH UNIVERSITY PIRATES. Whitworth actually led the venerable Pointers at Halftime by a score of 45-43 but Stevens Point came out in the 2nd Half focused and ready to play. When all was said and done the Pointers improved to 9-0 with a 93-75 victory.

424.png (136×104)TOP 25 UPSETS – The unranked MILLIKIN UNIVERSITY BIG BLUE welcomed the number 19 UW-STOUT BLUE DEVILS and toppled them 68-56 in a masterpiece of hardcourt defense. The Big Blue are now 6-4, the Blue Devils fall to 7-3.   ***   And the DICKINSON COLLEGE RED DEVILS were also ungracious hosts, upsetting the 23rd-ranked GUILFORD COLLEGE QUAKERS in an authoritative 90-75 affair. With this win the Red Devils improve to Continue reading →
