Vance Granville VanguardsVANCE-GRANVILLE COLLEGE VANGUARDS

Location: Henderson, NC

Comment: Kudos to the folks at this institution for showing some creativity with the name of their sports teams! The Vanguards definitely stand out and their logo is very, very eye-catching!

Quinsigamond College WyvernsQUINSIGAMOND COLLEGE WYVERNS

Location: Worcester, MA

Comment: Quinsigamond is a mouthful, no doubt about it, and when you combine that memorable school name with the memorable team name Wyverns you have got the kind of magic that Balladeer’s Blog loves!

Faulkner State Sun ChiefsFAULKNER STATE SUN CHIEFS

Location: Bay Minette, AL

Comment: With a nickname as cool as Sun Chiefs and with a logo that is as eye-catching as this one I can only hope that this college adds football at some point in the future.

newlogo01.aiCHESAPEAKE COLLEGE SKIPJACKS

Location: Wye Mills, MD

Comment: Don’t call them the Flapjacks. Don’t call them the Blackjacks. They are the Skipjacks, one of the most strikingly unique team names in any division of college sports. The Chesapeake College teams take their name from the sloop-rigged sailboat, not the tuna.  Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM AUGUST 24th

It’s the most wonderful tiiiiime of the yeeeeeeaaar! College Football 2017 is underway in the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog. With even more action on the way Saturday let’s take a look at last night’s results!

*** HEADLINES ***

Highland ScottiesTIGHTEST GAME OF THE NIGHT – The game between the HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES and their hosts, the DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS was a true Gridiron Armageddon. The 1st Quarter ended with the Conquistadors holding a 12-7 lead, but by Halftime the Scotties had cut that to an even tighter 12-10 score.

In the 3rd Quarter Highland College went on top 19-15 then outscored Dodge City College 7-6 in the 4th to win the game 26-21. Scotties QB Kyle Kearns threw for 2 Touchdowns while RB Kevin Brown added another on the ground.

Dakota State Trojans helmet NEWUPSET IN THE TOP TWENTY – The second edition of the Ag Bowl (as in ag-riculture) saw the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS do battle with the number 17 team in the nation – the DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS (should be Blue Tigers).

A 7-7 tie to end the 1st Quarter turned into a 28-21 advantage for the Trojans after an action-packed 2nd Quarter of play. After the break Dakota State expanded their lead over the Tigers to 42-33 in the 3rd before going on to win it 56-39. Trojans QB Jacob Giles went FORTY of FORTY-EIGHT for FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY-TWO YARDS!  Continue reading

TWENTY COOLEST-NAMED JUCO SPORTS TEAMS

Like all levels of college sports, the JUCO ranks have waaaay too many teams called Tigers, Eagles, Bulldogs and Wildcats, but here are the 20 Coolest Names.

20. BAKERSFIELD RENEGADES

 Location: Bakersfield, CA

Comment: If you “walk the streets of Bakersfield” you’re bound to hear about the Renegades, who have a nickname cool enough to be a rock group or a band of mercenaries in the notoriously bad post-apocalypse movie 2020 Texas Gladiators. Hard to believe in just a few years the country will be full of those marauding gangs, isn’t it?

19. HIGHLAND SCOTTIES

Location: Highland, KS

Comment: You just knew a dog lover like me would include this team! And there’s no truth to the rumor that their original mascot was Star Trek’s James Doohan standing on the sidelines and saying “I need more time, Cap’n!”

18. ASA AVENGERS

Location: New York, NY

Comment: Insert your own Emma Peal or “Why is the Avengers movie taking so long?” joke here. This school has one seriously cool nickname and logo, don’t they? T-shirt sales must be through the roof! And I’m sure their call to practice is either “We’re needed” or “Avengers Assemble!”

17. GARDEN CITY BRONCBUSTERS

Location: Garden City, KS

Comments: No, that’s not a typo, they go by Broncbusters, not BroncObusters. Under any name and in any sport they kick major butts. And you just haven’t busted until you’ve Broncbusted, y’know? Continue reading

VERMILION COLLEGE IRONMEN

Vermilion Ironmen logo

Location: Ely, MN

Division: NJCAA

Comment: There are so many ways we could go here. We could do a Black Sabbath reference (and I’m betting that Iron Man is performed ad nauseum by their marching band) or maybe a Marvel Comics superhero reference. Continue reading

Cardinal Stritch Wolves logoThe 2nd seeded CARDINAL STRITCH UNIVERSITY WOLVES played the (11) INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST GRENADIERS next.
