EDISON’S CONQUEST OF MARS (1898): PART SEVEN

Edison's Conquest of Mars 6Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of Garrett P Serviss’ odd sequel to Fighters From Mars, his blatant imitation of War of the Worlds.

PART SEVEN

The newly-arrived Martian spacecraft set down on the asteroid where the Earth’s forces had won their initial skirmish with the beings of the Red Planet. From within the craft emerged another squadron of the 15 ft tall aliens with oversized heads. Edison had made all of the Earth ships refrain from firing on the Martians before they could land, hoping that this show of mercy might open the possibility of peace.

Edison was to be disappointed, as the Martians used their heat-ray guns to open fire on the Earthlings. The Terrans returned fire with their disintegrator guns and the battle was on. Continue reading

AN ALL DOGS CHRISTMAS CAROL (1998)

All Dogs Christmas CarolBalladeer’s Blog’s Christmas Carol-A-Thon 2015 comes to a close with a look at this animated sequel to All Dogs Go To Heaven.

The dog-angel characters from that reasonably successful film use their Heavenly powers to get the dog-gangster Carface Caruthers (Ernest Borgnine) to change his ways. The portions of this direct-to- video flick dealing with the actual Christmas Carol adaptation are very good.

Unfortunately that element takes up barely half of the story. The overall tale is about a demonic figure called Belladonna (Bebe Neuwirth) who wants to use a gigantic magic dog bone to manipulate all of Earth’s dogs in a plot to destroy Christmas. Dog-Angels Charlie Barkin (Steven Weber) and Itchy (Dom Deluise) from the previous movie need the help of canine crime-lord Carface to thwart Belladonna’s plans. Hence the plot to “Dickens” him into becoming a better man … or dog, actually.

Charlie and Itchy get some of their other pals like Sasha (Sheena Easton) to help out as they stage visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come in their bid to reform Carface. Continue reading

THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN (1953): LIVE ACTION

The Stingiest Man in Town (1953)THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN (1953) – For  several years only the soundtrack for this terrific musical was available because the bulk of the video from this television production was missing. As of a few years back all the video has been restored so this Christmas season treasure can finally be enjoyed in its entirety.

Most people are only familiar with the 1978 Rankin-Bass Cartoon version of The Stingiest Man in Town, which chops the story down and omits or shortens a few songs. Here in all its glory is the original live 1953 production from December 23rd, rebroadcast in 1956, hence the 1956 date on some copies. Basil Rathbone stars as Scrooge, Johnny Desmond plays Nephew Fred, Martyn Green plays Bob Cratchit and Vic Damone appears as the young Ebenezer Scrooge at Fezziwig’s party.

Many of the songs in this musical have become Christmas song standards and people are often amazed that The Stingiest Man in Town is where the songs originated. An Old Fashioned Christmas, Listen to the Song of the Christmas Spirit, Yes, There is a Santa Claus, and Birthday Party of the King are among the Continue reading

EDISON’S CONQUEST OF MARS (1898): PART SIX

Edison's Conquest of Mars 5Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of Garrett P Serviss’ odd sequel to Fighters From Mars, his blatant imitation of War of the Worlds.

PART SIX

As the Earth spaceships drew nearer to the asteroid upon which a variety of Martian spacecraft lay landed and crashed the Martians – 15 feet tall with oversized heads – opened fire with their heat ray weapons. The Earth ships returned fire with the disintegrator rays Edison had devised based on Martian technology.

Two Earth ships and their entire crew were destroyed, so at length Edison ordered the entire fleet to back away from the asteroid in hopes of exceeding the range of the heat rays. At last the fleet reached a point at which the heat rays simply subjected the vessels to intense heat but no melting or loss of life. A bit further and Earth’s forces had sufficient space to regroup and mount another strategy.   Continue reading

A JETSON CHRISTMAS CAROL (1985)

JetsonsA JETSON CHRISTMAS CAROL (1985) – Christmas Carol-A- Thon 2015 continues here at Balladeer’s Blog! This 1985 animated version of the Dickens classic incorporates the characters from the Hanna Barbera program The Jetsons. They were a family who were the far-future counterparts of the Stone Age family The Flintstones.

A Jetsons Christmas Carol is not very good but it’s a lot better than the irritatingly awful Flintstones Christmas Carol. If you know the characters you can fill in the blanks yourself:

George Jetson is the substitute for the novel’s put-upon Bob Cratchit, and finds himself ordered to work very late on Christmas Eve, disappointing his wife Jane and their kids Elroy and Judy.  Continue reading

MUSLIM WOMEN TELL NON-MUSLIM WOMEN TO STOP DEFENDING HIJABS

THIS HAUNTING IMAGE STRIKES RIGHT TO THE CORE OF THE HATRED THAT IS ISLAM.

THIS HAUNTING IMAGE STRIKES RIGHT TO THE CORE OF THE HATRED THAT IS ISLAM.

Courageous Muslim women like Asra Q Nomani and Hala Arafa wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post denouncing the condescending and wrong-headed attempts of American Liberal women to defend the demeaning clothing that Muslim men force Muslim women to wear.

They called on the Liberal women to instead join them in denouncing Islam’s sexism and its oppression of women. Don’t hold your breath, ladies. American Liberals are FAR too gutless and hypocritical to criticize Islam like they do Christianity and Judaism.

UNTIL SUCH TIME AS ALL MUSLIM WOMEN ARE FREE TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICE ON THE MATTER, IT IS IRRELEVANT HOW MANY MUSLIM “STEPFORD WIVES” COME FORWARD TO PRETEND MUSLIM WOMEN WEAR THOSE OUTFITS WILLINGLY.

I’m not just pro-choice on abortion – I’m pro-choice on the clothing issue, too. American Liberals are too hypocritical for that. FOR THE LADIES’ OP-ED: Continue reading

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES AGREE: VICTIMS OF MUSLIM VIOLENCE SHOULD BE IGNORED

The symbol of the nonexistent Balladeer Political Party

The symbol of the nonexistent Balladeer Political Party

In Saturday’s Presidential Debate Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders spelled out the Democratic Party’s position on non-Muslims who are rude enough to fall victim to Muslim terrorist attacks.

That position: the Democratic Party’s only concern is wooing the Muslim vote and the votes of illegal immigrants while accusing people of racism if they dare to question them.

THIS COUNTRY NEEDS A VIABLE THIRD PARTY!  Continue reading

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1974)

Twas the Night before christmasTWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1974) – The dumbest of all animated Christmas stories. Even as a little kid I wanted to kick this cartoon special’s cold, merciless Santa Claus between the legs over and over again.

When ONE dorky mouse writes a letter to the newspaper debunking Santa’s existence old Saint Nick shows a decided lack of Christmas spirit by pompously deciding that NOBODY in the town will get any gifts. The town constructs a massive clock that plays a butt-kissing song to try to appease the wrath of the power-crazed Dread Deity of Yule, Kris Kringle. Continue reading
