BALLADEER’S BOWL SIX: KNIGHTS VS PURPLE RAIDERS
As always Balladeer’s Bowl pits the National Champions of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) against the National Champions of the NCAA Division Three.
The MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS are the NAIA champs and the UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS are the champs of D3.
Readers of Balladeer’s Blog get to vote on the winner over the next week, so NAIA and D3 boosters can begin their annual deluge of emails to me arguing for their choice. Continue reading

NAIA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS DEFEAT THE NCAA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW
The votes are all in for the 3rd edition of Balladeer’s Bowl in which my readers get to vote on who would win if the NAIA college football champs played the NCAA Division 3 football champs. D3 needed a Joe Namath moment for this 3rd go-round but none materialized as the NAIA champs made it 3 Balladeer’s Bowl victories in a row.
The MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS came in as the NAIA title holders with the storied MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS carrying the banner of D3 football. 263 voters felt the Knights would defeat the Purple Raiders with just 212 voting for Mt Union. D3 can take solace from the fact that this was the most votes their team has gotten thus far in this hypothetical matchup.
Here’s a look at the winners and losers of all 3 Balladeer’s Bowl games:
Balladeer’s Bowl 3: MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS defeated the Mount Union Purple Raiders

BALLADEER’S BOWL 3: NAIA FOOTBALL CHAMPS VS THE NCAA CHAMPS
Balladeer’s Blog regularly chronicles the intense gridiron rivalry between the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and the NCAA Division 3. Each year I allow my readers to vote in Balladeer’s Bowl about who would win if the NAIA champions played D3’s title winners. This year that means the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS from the NAIA and the MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS from D3. Will it be 3 victories in a row for the NAIA team? As always, to avoid multiple votes by the same people you can cast your vote by emailing me at Continue reading

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ACTION: SEPTEMBER 22ND
The NAIA’s 2nd ranked Marian University Knights welcome the number 15 Grand View Vikings today while the defending champion St Xavier University Cougars, in the top spot, are on the road against the Trinity International University Trojans.
In the ongoing race for the most wins in NAIA college football history, Keven Donley, Head Coach of the (12) St Francis (IN) Cougars will try to break his tie with Hank Biesiot of the Dickinson State Blue Hawks at 256 wins. Donley’s team hosts the winless Concordia (MI) Cardinals so he has a reasonable shot at making today the day. Coach Beez’s Blue Hawks are on the road against the Southern Oregon Raiders and with the way DSU has been struggling the past few seasons Hank’s win total may be standing still today.

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2012
FROSTING FROSTY’S SHORTS – Kevin Donley, the Head Coach of the (6) ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS (helmet at left) tied the legendary Frosty Westering for the most wins in NAIA college football at 256.
The victory came in yet another NAIA victory over an NCAA Division 3 team as the Cougars defeated the STEVENS POINT POINTERS 39-31.
BIG RIVER BOWL – The NAIA’s football double-header event for the holiday weekend featured three ranked teams in action.
In the first game the (22) CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS (helmet at left) routed the KANSAS WESLEYAN COYOTES by a score of 31-10. Game Two presented the spectacle of the (3) MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS (2011 semi- finalists) defeating the (11) BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS, with the only disappointing element being the fact that the game was called because of lightning after 3 quarters. The Knights won 31-7 and start the season at 2-0.
THE CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS RULE THE WORLD – While mentioning NAIA football let me also point out that the CONCORDIA (AL) HORNETS (U) brought down DIVISION ONE’S MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE DELTA DEVILS, the alma mater of THE Jerry Rice. The Hornets emerged with a 20-19 win in this perfect example of college teams with heart toppling Division One schools with their enormous budgets.
TOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA – This Labor Day Saturday saw just one upset in the NAIA rankings.
The PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS took it on the road and toppled the 25th- ranked CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS in a 14-7 epic that played as a celebration of Old School smash-mouth football with the defenses making the offenses pay for every yard and every point.
TOP 25 UPSETS – D3 – The ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS, the football pride of Glassboro, NJ, were unranked but upset the 9th- ranked DELAWARE VALLEY AGGIES by an Continue reading

BALLADEER’S BLOG’S NAIA COLLEGE FOOTBALL PRESEASON TOP 25
Yes, it’s Balladeer’s Blog’s preseason rankings for the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) football teams. The NAIA has so many potent football teams from top to bottom I’ll be doing an entire Top 25 for them every week instead of my usual Top 12.
The football season in the NAIA kicks off on August 24th, and as always Balladeer’s Blog will be there covering the action all season long.
The reigning national champions, the Saint Xavier University Cougars will begin defending their title soon with Dianne “The Cougar” Zajdel cheering them on. Coach Mike Feminis’ boys are fresh off their first national football crown but they are not the top team in my rankings here in the preseason.
Based on overall performance over the past several years the C.C. Fighting Saints, last year’s runners- up, are at number 1. The Hellions from Helena, as I call them, have earned a name for football excellence season after season and have won six of the last ten national championships and played in eight of those ten title games. Teams named Cougars have been a hurdle for C.C., with the University of Sioux Falls Cougars and Chicago’s own SXU Cougars being the only two teams to defeat the Fighting Saints in Rome, GA, the home of the NAIA Championship Game.
Coach Fem’s boys are at number two, with the entire Top 25 looking like this:
1. C.C. Fighting Saints ### 2. SXU Cougars (defending champs) ### 3. Georgetown (KY) Tigers ### 4. Marian University Knights ### 5. MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers ### 6. Morningside Mustangs ### 7. Continue reading
