In the middle 1980’s/ Way down on Level 31 …
Before MST3K there was … THE TEXAS 27 FILM VAULT!
Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of this neglected cult show from the mid-1980′s.
EPISODE ORIGINALLY BROADCAST: Saturday March 30th, 1985 from 10:30pm to 1:00am.
SERIAL: Prior to showing and mocking the movie Randy Clower and Richard Malmos, the show’s machine-gun wielding “Film Vault Technicians First Class” showed an episode of the notoriously campy sci-fi serial The Lost City (1935). That serial featured a super-scientific city lost in the middle of the African jungle plus zombified “giant” African tribesmen, ray-guns, a slinky femme fatale and a tribe of pygmies. There’s also a Great White Hunter as the hero and a mad scientist whose inventions include a machine that turns black people into white people! And the “colorization” is considered a REWARD for tribesmen who serve the mad scientist well! All this plus BOTH William Boyds in one serial!
THE TUNNEL WITH THE MINIATURES OF MULTIPLE VAULT DOORS THAT OPENED AS THE POV CAMERA FILMED THEM.
FILM VAULT LORE: One eye-catching element of The Texas 27 Film Vault was the POV shot down a tunnel of various vault doors which would open in turn as the camera approached them. It’s another aspect of the show that had Vaulties feeling deja vu when MST3K debuted years later.
The shot was achieved through miniatures, of course, and Randy Clower was kind enough to provide me with the behind-the- scenes photo shown above. Continue reading
Yesterday was the kickoff of the 2014 college football season! ESPN doesn’t have the contract to televise the divisions that got underway so that’s why they simply ignore them to avoid publicizing games shown elsewhere. Here is a look at noteworthy results from August 23rd’s action.
INAUGURAL GAME FOR ACU – The ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM played their very first game of intercollegiate football last night! They hosted the storied EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS who, unfortunately for the Firestorm faithful, made it a bittersweet night at best for ACU. The Crusaders (helmet above left) showed their years of experience over the newbies and went back home with a 40-16 victory. Congratulations to Evangel and welcome to gridiron action to the Firestorm! We’re all looking forward to seeing your football program grow.
MOUNTAINEERS CLIMB OVER THE OAKS – The EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS were on the road against the MENLO COLLEGE OAKS. The Mountaineers led 13-0 after the 1st Quarter, but by Halftime the Oaks had whittled that down to a 16-14 advantage. The 3rd Quarter started out with the teams exchanging scores, leaving the score EOU 23 MC 20. The Oaks closed out the Quarter by taking their first lead of the game, 27-23 but the Mountaineers would put up 22 unanswered points in the 4th to win 45-27. QB Zach Bartlow went 23 of 33 with 4 TD’s.
DAWGS CHOMP THE DIGGERS – The UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA- WESTERN BULLDOGS welcomed their archrivals the MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS yesterday. Things got rolling early in a big way for the Bulldogs, who scored on their first three possessions for a 21-0 lead in the 1st Quarter. That expanded to a 35-0 lead at the Half. To close out the game the Montana Tech defense nearly shut out the UMW offense, giving up one lone field goal in the 2nd Half. The Orediggers scored once in the 4th Quarter making the final score Bulldogs 38 Orediggers 6. UMW QB Tyler Hulse threw for 3 TD’s in the win. Continue reading
MORE PEYOTE-LACED ADVENTURES WITH G-8 AND HIS BATTLE ACES
Balladeer’s Blog resumes its examination of the neglected Pulp Hero G-8. This continues a story-by- story look at the adventures of this World War One American fighter pilot who – along with his two wingmen the Battle Aces – took on various supernatural and super- scientific menaces thrown at the Allied Powers by the Central Powers of Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Muslim Turks.
G-8 was created by Robert J Hogan in 1933 when World War One was still being called simply the World War or the Great War. Over the next eleven years Hogan wrote 110 stories featuring the adventures of G-8, the street-smart pug Nippy Weston and the brawny giant Bull Martin. The regular cast was rounded out by our hero’s archenemy Doktor Krueger, by Battle, G-8’s British manservant and by our hero’s girlfriend R-1: an American nurse/ spy whose real name, like G-8’s was never revealed.
31. SCOURGE OF THE SKY BEAST (April 1936) – Doktor Krueger returns yet again! This time the little fiend is reworking a super-scientific menace that he used against the Allied Powers in the very first G-8 adventure, The Bat Staffel. The plane-sized giant bats are back in action but this time are improved to the point where they may be impossible for Allied pilots to overcome. Continue reading
The most wonderful time of the year is nearly upon us! If you’re ready for some gridiron clashes THAT COUNT for this year’s record, the divisions of college football covered here at Balladeer’s Blog kick off TOMORROW! The NAIA’s ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM (helmets at left) will be playing their very FIRST year of intercollegiate football in 2014. For their inaugural game they will host the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS tomorrow.
Some of the other terrific games lined up for tomorrow:
* NAIA *
The MAYVILLE STATE COMETS will host the WALDORF UNIVERSITY WARRIORS in a game that would normally pit the NORTH STAR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION against the MID-STATES LEAGUE. Waldorf has joined the NSAA, making it a conference clash for both teams.
The MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS are going to take it on the road for Week One and do battle with their arch-rivals the UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA-WESTERN BULLDOGS. These two teams always play some of the most memorable games in the FRONTIER CONFERENCE each year.
Meanwhile the MENLO COLLEGE OAKS will welcome the EASTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS to open the season. The Oaks are independent when it comes to football while the Mountaineers hail from the FRONTIER CONFERENCE. Continue reading
PRESIDENT “LET THEM EAT CAKE”
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall. The wall was where Humpty Dumpty had decided to sit. Humpty Dumpty could be found on the wall, sitting. Sitting was the activity Humpty Dumpty was engaging in and the wall was the place he had chosen to sit. Everyone agreed that the wall was where Humpty Dumpty was sitting. It was of no avail to wistfully pretend that Humpty Dumpty was seated elsewhere. With an air of resignation all and sundry were forced to agree that the wall, despite how much they might desperately wish for it to be otherwise, was indeed where Humpty Dumpty sat.
The wall had first been constructed eighty-seven years earlier by two laborers named Stanislaw and Ernst. Throughout his workday Stanislaw often reflected on how he might think of Ernst as the most beautiful man in the world, if not for the fact that, if the truth be known, he considered Ernst to be the most physically repugnant man he had ever seen. Or smelled, for that matter. Still, though, Stanislaw couldn’t help but wonder and it made his pulse quicken each and every time.
Stanislaw wondered what it would be like to be a voluptuously beautiful young blonde woman – or, in his more kittenish moods a redhead – and to have Ernst take him and smother him with kisses, and all the while he would helplessly struggle to free himself from both of Ernst’s tanned, muscular arms. But then he would remember that that dream was impossible – Ernst only had one arm. Everyone agreed that this was so. Ernst was a man who had lost one arm and therefore had only one arm left. If one were to describe a man with two arms there was no denying the fact that it could not be Ernst whom they were thus describing. After all, as everyone from both far and near knew … Ernst had only one arm. And it was beautiful. Continue reading
