BAD MOVIE PAGE: THE BABY (1973)

The encore presentation of my review of the 70’s cult horror bomb The Baby, originally from 2010, is up now at Man In Black Reviews.

THE BABY (1973) – Category: The 70’s version of camp, with a premise and plot elements that would have been banned in previous decades.       It’s hard to believe Ted Post was involved with this strange movie. It was considered very weird and kinky even in the 1970’s when it came out, and that was long before the internet made the entire world aware of the infantilism fetish that this film reeks of! “Baby” himself redefines the expression “arrested development”, since he’s a full-grown adult who crawls around in a diaper (which needs changing occassionally – all together now – Eeewwwww!), sleeps in a big crib, eats baby food and Continue reading

NAIA BASKETBALL PLAYER WINS ESPN’S DUNK CONTEST

The NAIA’s James Justice, a senior basketball player for the Martin Methodist College RedHawks (logo at left) won ESPN’s live dunk contest, beating out NCAA Division 1 players like Auburn’s Kenny Gabriel, Miami’s Dequan Jones and Clemson’s Bryan Narcisse in the semifinals.

In its usual style, ESPN virtually never even mentions NAIA college sports. That’s because the behemoth outfit is geared purely toward hyping its own programming, not actual sports journalism. Since ESPN doesn’t broadcast NAIA games they pretend their football, basketball and baseball teams don’t even exist. It’s similar to Continue reading

LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES AND “JUDICIAL ACTIVISM”

Welcome back to Balladeer’s Blog, the only Independent Voter site on the internet that is truly nonpartisan in its criticism of the shrill children called Liberals and Conservatives.

Last time around I addressed the hilariously frantic overreaction of both Liberals and Conservatives to the oral arguments about Obamacare presented to the Supreme Court. In a related topic, this time I’ll address what America’s shrill political zealots mean when they say “judicial activism”. This is in amused response to Obama’s whining about the Supreme Court and the power the Justices wield as “unelected figures” appointed for life.

It’s typical of Liberals and Conservatives to cry “judicial activism” whenever the Supreme Court interferes with legislation their particular group  supports, but when Supreme Court rulings go their way, those same left-wing and right-wing zealots praise the Continue reading

COLLEGE BASEBALL TOP 25: D3

The Top 3 in the rankings remained the same, with the Christopher Newport University Captains (logo at left) holding at number 3, the Marietta College Pioneers in 2nd place and the Trinity (TX) Tigers retaining the top spot.

There was a lot of movement elsewhere in the poll, as you’ll see right here:

1. Trinity Tigers *** 2. Marietta Pioneers (defending champs) *** 3. CNU Captains *** 4. Salisbury Sea Gulls *** 5. Eastern Continue reading

BAD MOVIE PAGE: BLOOD OF DRACULA (1957)

I’ve been getting emails requesting that I review this movie, but I already did in 2010. For the folks requesting it, here it is again. And remember, if you want instant gratification for your bad movie fix you can check my Bad Movie page to see if I’ve already reviewed the movie you’re requesting: https://glitternight.com/bad-movies/

BLOOD OF DRACULA (1957) – Category: Bad enough and with a classically weird premise but not fun-bad enough for my highest rating.   Not to be confused with Blood Of Dracula’s Castle, yet another of the roughly 9,712 movies in which John Carradine appeared. No, this little honey is best remembered as the movie that should have been called I Was A Teenage Vampire. It’s from the people who brought us both I Was A Teenage Werewolf and I Was A Teenage   Frankenstein. Not only Continue reading

THE TOP SIX ALTERNATE GOSPELS AND SCRIPTURES PART 2

As promised, here is the second part of Balladeer’s Blog’s look at the top six apocryphal gospels, meaning the rejected and obscure gospels outside of the four accepted by mainstream Christianity as “authentic”  (snicker).

Those four are, of course, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. There were dozens of others and I’ve selected the six that provide the best opportunities for comparative mythology.

And remember, this is NOT an April Fool’s Day joke.

3. THE GOSPEL OF THE SAVIOR – The narrative of this gospel centers around dialogues between Jesus and his apostles in the last few days before his arrest and crucifixion. Some of the material is similar to the Gospels of John and Matthew, but  some is Gnostic, with references to Continue reading

THE TOP SIX ALTERNATE GOSPELS AND SCRIPTURES

Everyone but the most sheltered Christians have known for centuries about the alternate, or apocryphal gospels. The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were the four canonical or “official” gospels that were accepted by the mainstream church but there were dozens of other gospels with wildly varying versions of the story of Jesus.

With my love of mythology I first got into those other gospels when I was 18 and that was long before Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code fouled the territory by attracting countless conspiracy kooks to the subject of these obscure writings. It complicates conversations now because when  many people hear you discussing the apocryphal gospels they think you’re a paranoid crackpot looking for the  descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene around every corner.

At any rate it’s fun to wonder what form Easter celebrations would have taken if the following rejected gospels had been accepted as “official.” And remember, this is NOT an April Fool’s Day joke.

6. THE ACTS OF THECLA – Since the Gospel of Mary has gotten so much attention following the success of Dan Brown’s writings and their screen adaptations I decided to throw a spotlight on the neglected woman named Thecla instead. Thecla supposedly became a follower of Continue reading
