ELIZABETH WARREN: “ONE THIRTY-SECONDTH BREED, THAT’S ALL SHE EVER HEARD”

American academia is noted for the decades-old scam of claiming kinship with a Native American tribe to present yourself as a “minority” and improve your chances of getting hired (and later promoted, of course) by an uppercrust  whitebread institution anxious to add another minority notch to their quota belt. The fact that they can do it without hiring an ACTUAL minority member is probably one of the fringe benefits to the pompous, spoiled fools of Ivory Towerland in the United States.

Elizabeth Warren is the latest American who seems more overlord than underdog to come under scrutiny for claiming descent from Native Americans. She says she’s one thirty-secondth Cherokee and Continue reading

Today marks day 1 of the College World Series for the USCAA, which stands  for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. The USCAA format features a 10 team field playing in a double elimination tournament to determine the championship.

The Southern Virginia University Knights (logo at top left), a team from a terrific Mormon institution, were last year’s runners- up to the Briarcliffe Bulldogs. Today they took care of business against the Clark State Eagles. The games are still being played, so check back to Balladeer’s Blog for score updates throughout the Continue reading

END OF THE WORLD MYTH: ZOROASTRIAN VERSION

Since so many gullible people actually believe the world will end this December 21st Balladeer’s Blog has been looking at other end of the world scenarios on a regular basis.

In the Zoroastrian version of the end times the Big Event will happen 3,000 years after Zoroaster/ Zarathustra introduced the world to the belief system that bears his name. For those who date Zoroaster’s birth to around 1,000 BCE that means the end could come any year now, but for those who date his birth closer to 600 BCE the world still has hundreds of years to go.

The approaching climax to the ancient battle between the chief deity Ahura Mazda/ Ohrmazd and his evil archenemy, the demonic Ahriman/ Angra Mainyu, will be kicked off when the sun and moon are no longer seen in the sky and a Continue reading

FORGOTTEN TELEVISION: THE BUCCANEERS (1956-1957)

If you enjoyed Robert Shaw’s freebooting turn as the pirate Red Ned Lynch in the 1976 movie Swashbuckler you’ll love him as Captain Dan Tempest in this  series  from the 1950’s. Shaw was equal parts Errol Flynn and Jack Sparrow on the program, which featured him as the captain of the Sultana

Tempest and his crew were former pirates pardoned and sent to sea as pirate hunters and as privateers against the Spanish, but they still found time to foil the sinister machinations of corrupt British authorities in the Bahamas, Jamaica and elsewhere. Fans of derring- d0 who are Continue reading

ASA AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

No Robert Downey, Jr, no problem! He did his best work in Greaser’s Palace, anyway. (I’m kidding!) Since the past few weeks in all our lives have seemed like just downtime between commercials for the heavily hyped Avengers movie being released today I figured I would mark the occassion with another acknowledgment of how butt- kickingly cool this logo and team name are.

College football’s ASA Avengers won one of Balladeer’s Blog’s  “20 Coolest” contests in 2010 and you can see why! That logo adorns their football helmets and merchandise, making their gear among the most stylish and distinctive in all of college sports.

The Avengers also Continue reading
