Comets

Comets

12. HOUSTON COMETS

Established: 1997

Comment: The Comets were one of the Original Eight WNBA franchises and were the league’s very first dynasty. The Comets won the WNBA championship for the first four years of the league’s existence. To put that in perspective not even the NBA’s Jordan/Pippin Bulls or Kobe/Shaq Lakers were able to win four titles in a row. Continue reading

Avengers

Avengers

The ASA College Avengers football team has only been around for a handful of years but last year made their first Bowl appearance and now they’ve already gotten their first player into the NFL!

Gilbert Pena, standout defensive lineman for the Avengers, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the storied Green Bay Packers franchise. Pena is a Yonkers, NY native and delayed the start of his college career by 4 years to care for his mother as she battled cancer.

Gilbert was an impact player for Head Coach Dennis Orlando’s ASA College team and earned all-conference honors after a Continue reading

FOUR MORE COLLEGE BASEBALL CHAMPIONS CROWNED

* NAIA *

Faulkner U Eagles logoThe NAIA’s top seeded FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES ended the Cinderella run of the 7th seeded LEWIS-CLARK STATE WARRIORS. It’s rare for Lewis-Clark State to be considered Cinderellas on the diamond but how else would you describe a 7 seed in the championship game? At any rate Faulkner lived up to all the hype enroute to its first ever national title in baseball. By the 2nd inning the Eagles’ sound and fury had given them a 6-2 lead over the Warriors. By the 4th it was an 8-2 lead, then a 10-2 lead after 7, all climaxing with an 11-4 final score. Congratulations to Faulkner, the 2013 baseball champions of the NAIA (National Association of Continue reading

 * NCAA D3 *

Linfield Wildcats logoYesterday the NCAA Division 3 World Series Champions were crowned. The LINFIELD COLLEGE WILDCATS and the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE HUSKIES were the last two teams standing. In a battle of cats and dogs the Huskies scored a run in the 1st inning and led 1-0 until the bottom of the 4th. At that point the Wildcats put up 4 runs of their own. Neither team gave up any more points, making the final score 4-1. Congratulations Linfield!

* NJCAA3 *

GloucesterIn Division Three of the NJCAA the championship game went from being a classic to a blowout in one half of an inning. The upstart CENTURY COLLEGE WOOD DUCKS and the GLOUCESTER COLLEGE ROADRUNNERS were all tied up at 3-3 after 4 full innings of play. In the top of the 5th the Roadrunners “beep-beeped” out TEN RUNS and from there the outcome was never in doubt. The final score was Continue reading
