FEBRUARY FRENZY: COLLEGE BASKETBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS ARE UNDERWAY

The NAIA’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference as always leads the way for the nation and tipped off its 2014 college basketball tournament last night. In addition the post-season is underway in the NJCAA as well.

calumetcollegecrimsonwaveathleticsThe CALUMET COLLEGE CRIMSON WAVE traveled to take on the PURDUE UNIVERSITY- CALUMET PEREGRINES in a clash of cool-named teams. In the first five and a half minutes of the game the Crimson Wave took control and held the whip hand the rest of the way. Calumet College won this First Round matchup by a final score of 72-50, with the Crimson Wave’s Robert Jackson contributing 22 points to lead all scorers. Franqlin Gatson was right behind his teammate with 21 points and Noah Allen’s 11 points made him the only Peregrine to reach double digits. Calumet College shot 52% from the field and, amazingly, FIFTY-NINE PERCENT from 3-point range.

Roosevelt U LakersIn the other First Round game in the CCAC last night the ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS battled the INDIANA UNIVERSITY- SOUTH BEND TITANS in an undeniable hardcourt epic. These two familiar foes played a very physical game that saw the score knotted up 10 times through most of regulation, and then in the final fraction of a second the 11th tie sent them into Overtime courtesy of a Free Throw from the Titans’ Chris Beam. The Lakers came out reenergized for the extra session and churned out a 7-1 run that put them in control. The final score was 73-68 with Joe Harks from Roosevelt University leading all scorers with 21 points and 15 more tossed in by Tyree York. For IU- South Bend the Beam Brothers – Chris and Brandon – scored 18 points each to lead their team.

* NCCAA CHAMPIONSHIP *

ohiochristiantrailblazersANOTHER CHAMPION CROWNED – The National Christian College Athletic Association Division Two title game was played last night. The top seeded OHIO CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY TRAILBLAZERS squared off against the Cinderella 7 seeds, the ARLINGTON BAPTIST COLLEGE PATRIOTS. The Patriots accomplished the seemingly impossible by actually leading the Trailblazers at halftime, 38-37. OCU was the season’s dominant team, however, and reasserted themselves in the 2nd half. The final score in this National Championship Game was Trailblazers  73 Patriots  62. Congratulations to Ohio Christian University!

* NAIA2 FINAL FOUR *

Cardinal Stritch Wolves logoGAME OF THE DAY – The (2) CARDINAL STRITCH UNIVERSITY WOLVES battled the upstart (10) DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS through TWO OVERTIMES before obtaining a final result. The 1st half was a defensive struggle, with the score at the break a startlingly low 29-24 in favor of the Wolves. 61-61 was the tally at the end of regulation and it wasn’t until the 2nd Overtime period that CSU put some distance between themselves and the Defenders. In the end the 82-76 result propelled the Wolves into the NAIA Division Two’s Final Four.

williampennStatesmenA MAN CALLED DEVLIN – The top seeded WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN trailed the MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS by one point with time expiring, but a James Devlin fallaway jumper gave the Statesmen a 67-66 victory. With the win WPU advances to their FIRST EVER Final Four. Even more amazing is the fact that the Statesmen still have only ONE LOSS for the entire 2012-2013 campaign. William Penn won the battle of the backboards, out- rebounding the Continue reading
