ACHA3 COLLEGE HOCKEY CHAMPS CROWNED

ACHA DIVISION THREE

Sault College CougarsCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – In just their very first year of play in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) Canada’s SAULT COLLEGE COUGARS made it to the title game. Their opponents were the GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS.

The Lakers got on the board first off an unassisted Goal by Reidar Burgeson, following which Ryan Vendramin of the Cougars notched a HAT TRICK to give his team a 3-1 lead. Sault College added 2 more Goals to end the 1st Period with a 5-1 advantage. Continue reading

FROZEN FOUR ACTION IN ACHA3 COLLEGE HOCKEY

ACHA DIVISION THREE

Grand Valley State logoFIRST SEMIFINAL – The GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS squared off against the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN WOLVERINES. The Wolverines got off to a 2-0 advantage in the 1st Period before the Lakers got on the scoreboard to make it a 2-1 game by Period’s end. In the 2nd Period Grand Valley State knotted things up at 2 Goals apiece, then polished off Michigan 4-2 in the 3rd. Lakers Goalie Andrew Rozenbaum stopped 47 of 49 Shots on Goal. Continue reading

ACHA3 COLLEGE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT DAY THREE

ACHA DIVISION THREE

Oakland University Golden Grizzlies SQUAREDAY THREE, GAME ONE – The OAKLAND (MI) UNIVERSITY GOLDEN GRIZZLIES skated against the UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA SPARTANS. In the 1st Period the Spartans got off to a 1-0 lead only to see the Golden Grizzlies go on top 3-1. The 2nd Period brought 2 University of Tampa Goals interrupted by another Goal for Oakland U. New score: 4-3, Golden Grizzlies. In the 3rd Period Oakland University dominated for a 7-4 victory. Austin McArdle was the winning Goalie with 36 stops on 40 Shots on Goal.

Fairfield StagsDAY THREE, GAME TWO – In this game the FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY STAGS clashed with the KANSAS UNIVERSITY JAYHAWKS. Neither team scored in the opening Period, and the 2nd Period ended with the Jayhawks up on Fairfield 2-0. Three Goals from the Stags in the 3rd Period gave them a 3-2 comeback win. Fairfield University Goalie Nick Lanni stopped 42 of 44 Shots on Goal.

Farmingdale State RamsDAY THREE, GAME THREE – Up next the FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS took on the AIR FORCE ACADEMY FALCONS. The Rams held a 1-0 lead to end the 1st Period but the Falcons tied things up at 1-1 in the 2nd. The Air Force Academy went on top 2-1 in the 3rd Period before Farmingdale State whacked in 3 Goals for a 4-2 triumph. The winning Goalie was Stephen Montgomery of the Rams with 35 stops on 37 Shots on Goal. Continue reading

COLLEGE HOCKEY TOURNEY: ACHA3 DAY TWO RESULTS

ACHA DIVISION THREE

Fairfield StagsDAY TWO, GAME ONE – The FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY STAGS took on the OAKLAND (MI) UNIVERSITY GOLDEN GRIZZLIES. Andrew Bulmer of the Stags got an unassisted Goal in the 1st Period, which ended with his team up 1-0. In the 2nd Period Cale Denison’s Power Play Goal tied the score at 1-1. Neither team scored in the 3rd Period, sending things into Overtime, in which Fairfield U won the game 2-1 off a Kyle Marano Goal 8:46 into the extra session. Stags Goalie Nick Lanni stopped 40 of 41 Shots on Goal.

South Florida BullsDAY TWO, GAME TWO – The UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS clashed with the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT MILWAUKEE PANTHERS. The Bulls were chasing the Panthers 3-0 at the end of the 1st Period. In the 2nd Period the University of South Florida pulled to within 3-2 before going on to win the game 6-3 in the 3rd. The winning Goalie was Samuel Coleman of the Bulls with 30 stops on 33 Shots on Goal. Continue reading

ACHA3 HOCKEY TOURNAMENT DAY ONE RESULTS

ACHA DIVISION THREE

Fairfield StagsDAY ONE, GAME ONE – The FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY STAGS played the UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA SPARTANS. Neither team scored in the 1st Period and in the 2nd the Spartans went up 1-0 but the Stags tied things up at 1-1 6 minutes later. The 3rd Period ended in a 2-2 tie, with Fairfield University’s Russell Mazzaro knocking in the winning Goal 51 seconds into Overtime. In this 3-2 win Stags Goalie Nick Lanni stopped 36 of 38 Shots on Goal. 

Sault College CougarsDAY ONE, GAME TWO – Canada’s SAULT COLLEGE COUGARS, making the Tournament in their very first year of ACHA play, clashed with the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT MILWAUKEE PANTHERS. In this catfight-that- wasn’t the Cougars made the Panthers their prison brides, leading them 2-1 in the 1st Period and 7-1 in the 2nd Period before putting them away in the 3rd by a blowout score of 10-1. Sault College Goalie Drew Gregory got the win, stopping 17 of 18 Shots on Goal. 

Grand Valley State logoDAY ONE, GAME THREE – The Upset-Minded GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS took the ice against the AIR FORCE ACADEMY FALCONS in this game. The opening Period saw the Falcons grab a 2-0 lead before the Lakers came back to go on top 3-2. In the 2nd Period the two teams exchanged Goals, making the score 4-3. Grand Valley State got out to a 6-3 advantage in the 3rd before winning the game 6-4. Reidar Burgeson led the Lakers with 3 of their Goals, while Goalie Jared Myers logged the W stopping 18 of 22 Shots on Goal.   Continue reading

COLLEGE HOCKEY: THREE CHAMPIONS CROWNED

ACHA DIVISION ONE

Minot State Beavers logoCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The 6th seeded MINOT STATE BEAVERS were looking for their second National Championship as they took the ice against the 5 seeds – the IOWA STATE CYCLONES – in the title game of the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association).

FIRST PERIOD: At 12:33 into the opening Period Iowa State’s Trevor Sabo slammed in a Goal assisted by CJ Banser & Dylan Goggin. SCORE: Cyclones 1 Beavers 0. At 18:46 in, Minot State’s Blake Fournier answered, assisted by Paul O’Connor & Adam Wowryk. SCORE: 1-1 tie.

SECOND PERIOD: Forty-five seconds into the 2nd Period the Beavers went on top 2-1 off a Goal by Shain Scheschuk. Shain was assisted by Eric Bollefor & Johl Swedlo.

THIRD PERIOD: The score remained 2-1 until there were just 2 seconds left to play, when Eric Bollefor got an Empty Net Goal to clinch a 3-1 win for Minot State. The winning Goalie was Joshua Bykowski, who stopped 33 of 34 Shots on Goal. * THE BEAVERS ARE ACHA HOCKEY CHAMPIONS *  

ACHA DIVISION TWO

Florida Gulf Coast University EaglesCHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The top seeds – the FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY EAGLES – furthered their case for being called a Dynasty as they battled the 3rd seeded NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY HUSKIES for the D2 crown. The Eagles were the Defending Champions and were going for their 4th title in the past 8 years.  

FIRST PERIOD: At 4:55 into the opening Period, Brandon Beard of Florida Gulf Coast University notched a Goal assisted by Dylan Cantwell. His teammate David Wong scored an unassisted Goal 15:31 in to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead over the Huskies. Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM JANUARY 4th

kccougar_logosmall.gif (150×154)SCORING ORGY IN DOUBLE OVERTIME – The KUYPER COLLEGE COUGARS were on the road against the PURDUE UNIVERSITY-CALUMET PEREGRINES yesterday in an offensive explosion that lasted through regulation and two Overtime periods. In the end the Cougars went back home with a 127-120 victory   ###   Also in Double Overtime the MCPHERSON COLLEGE BULLDOGS defeated the visiting HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY INDIANS by a score of 112-105.

Bethany Swedes logoTHE BAHAMA HOUSE SHOOTOUT – The BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES took on the TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS in the semifinals of this tournament yesterday. The Swedes put up 92 points to the 82 scored by the Trojans   ###   And in the other semifinal the top-ranked host school, the EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY EAGLES came out on top in an 82-60 affair against the CENTRAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE TIGERS.

NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM JANUARY 26TH

Cumberlands PatriotsNUMBER THREE TAKES A FALL – The 25th ranked UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS hosted the number 3 team in the nation yesterday, the PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS. In what turned out to be the game of the day the Patriots hung tough and won a 73-71 Instant Classic that may turn out to be the team’s signature win of the regular season.   ###   Meanwhile the WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS took on the 4th ranked JOHN BROWN UNIVERSITY GOLDEN EAGLES and came out on top by a score of 84-70.   ###   At number 8 the WILLIAM CAREY CRUSADERS fell on the road to the unranked AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY WARHAWKS in a 62-55 clash.   ###   The (18) ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS joined the fad of ranked teams losing on the road yesterday. The Hillcats were toppled 69-65 by the ever-tough LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS.   ###   .. And the number 24 SHAWNEE STATE BEARS added some novelty by losing at home to the ST CATHARINE PATRIOTS in an 80-72 hardcourt epic.  

southeastern university fireTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA DIVISION TWO – The SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FIRE brought down the number 4 ST THOMAS (FL) BOBCATS in a 60-58 game for the ages.   ###   The T12th ranked BETHEL (IN) PILOTS (riverboat pilots) fell on the road 85-79 to the unranked TAYLOR TROJANS.   ###   In a case of Tiger on Tiger violence the DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS toppled the homestanding (T12) DOANE TIGERS by a score of 87-83.   ###   The COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES took it on the road and brought down the 15th ranked NORTHWEST (WA) EAGLES  84-72.   ###   … And the Continue reading
