COLLEGE BASEBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RESULTS FROM APRIL 30th

* SOUTHERN STATES ATHLETIC CONFERENCE *

PrintUPSET OF THE DAY – The SSAC’s 8th seeded AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY WARHAWKS (formerly the Senators) delivered the shock of the day yesterday. The Warhawks rose up and dragged down the conference’s top seeded FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES in an undeniable Instant Classic. The Eagles were leading 2-0 going into the top of the 8th Inning when the Warhawk bats came to life, seizing a 4-2 lead. Faulkner, the defending national champions of NAIA college baseball, pulled to 4-3 in their half of the Inning and AUM responded by adding another run in the top of the 9th. The Warhawks limited the Eagles to just 1 run themselves in the bottom of the Inning and nabbed a 5-4 victory! AUM’s P.J. Leto got the win!

brewtonparkerTHEY HAD ‘EM ALL THE WAY! – With apologies to the late baseball broadcaster Bob Prince. The 2nd seeded BREWTON- PARKER COLLEGE BARONS well and truly had their First Round opponents – the 7th seeded UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE RAMS – all the way. A 2-0 lead after the 1st Inning became 3-0 after the 2nd, 4-0 after the 5th and 6-0 after the 6th! The Rams finally got on the board in the top of the 8th Inning with a pair of runs but the Barons added another run of their own to make it 7-2, which would hold up as the final score! For the Barons Mike Venturelli walked away with the win.   Continue reading

PULP HERO NORTHWEST SMITH: STORIES THREE AND FOUR

Northwest Smith 3Balladeer’s Blog continues its examination of another neglected pulp hero – in this case Northwest Smith. Created by the female author C.L. Moore in the 1930’s Northwest Smith was a ruthless outer-space smuggler and mercenary decades before Han Solo. With his Venusian partner Yarol at his side and armed with a trusty blaster Smith roamed the solar system in his deceptively fast spaceship The Maid. In the course of their criminal pursuits the two often found themselves in the role of reluctant heroes, sometimes with the fate of entire planets at stake. 3. SCARLET DREAM (1934) – Once again lying low between illegal activities of some sort Northwest Smith finds himself in the Martian city of Lakkmanda. The city’s illicit markets are legendary throughout the solar system and Smith buys a very odd scarlet blanket made of some otherworldly silk-like material. The blanket was found on a deserted spaceship with no sign left of the original crew, which should have warned our hero away from the odd blanket but if it had there would be no story. HITTITE MYTHOLOGY: THE TOP DEITIES

Hittite empireThe Hittite Empire spread throughout Anatolia, covering a large part of what is now Turkey and Syria as well as some parts far eastward and southward of there (accounts vary). The scarce remains of the texts regarding the deities worshipped by the Hittites are tantalizingly fragmentary but reflect and/or influenced myths from Mesopotamia across the west to ancient Greece and south to Canaanite territory.

ARANZAH – The god of the body of water that bore his name – the Aranzah River. The Aranzah is better known as the Tigris, which begins its journey southward from the Taurus Mountains in what is now eastern Turkey. This deity was a brother of the storm god Tarhun (Teshub to the Hurrians) and like him was born in the belly of the god Kumarbi.

ISTUSTAYA and PAPAYA – The Hittite goddesses of destiny. The two deities sat by the shores of the Black Sea where they would spin the threads that are each mortal’s destiny, taking special care with the fates of kings. The two left their seaside location only for special occassions like conferences of all the gods. Collectively the two were called the Gulses by the Hittites and the Hutena by the Hurrians. The ancient Greeks added a third to their number and called them the Morae (Fates).    Continue reading

Alfred State Pioneers logoTHE ULTIMATE PITCHER’S DUEL – Ryan Hedges from the ALFRED STATE PIONEERS took on Derek Harkin from the SUNY- CANTON KANGAROOS in the most exciting battle of the mounds from yesterday’s action.
